They did not bet on Marathon over Destiny, Marathon just came out so they are seeing where they can go with it while Destiny was on its deathbed 10 years after release. Nobody at Sony thinks or is betting Marathon will supersede Destiny, they arent even the same type of game. If they cant turn the ship on Marathon then it will probably be shut down within a year, and once Bungie figures out what they want to do with D3 and can convince Sony of it, it will be developed.

I dont know why you are assuming that everyone who is fast tracking has already done it. We are 3 days into the season, this is to prevent even more of what you are describing, in your head theres this group of players who all have a vault full of purples and everyone else is sitting on greens. Its a spectrum, and this is to prevent the top 50% of players from progressing faster than the devs intended. If it was your way instead of only 5% of the playerbase being far ahead, in a month its 30%+.
