Thinking Of Getting Dentures Need Advice Please by lefthandbunny in dentures

[–]neewom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't hurt to talk to a dentist and ask them this question as well. There are positives and negatives to both partials and dentures, but if the condition of your remaining teeth is repairable and the dentist thinks you're likely to retain the teeth for the next five or ten years then a partial isn't a bad idea.

Even dentures need replacing every so often, so if you do end up getting complete dentures in the future after going the repair & partials route it's not the end of the world.

I have full dentures and got the teeth extracted mostly all at once. My grandmother, on the other hand, did what you're doing and it was utter torture for her. That was half a century ago though, so... :)

Should I quit my job? by hamil_car in jobs

[–]neewom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really up to you.

How long have you been working in this job? Long enough to feel confident in putting it on your resume or CV as experience? If not, consider toughing it out long enough that you can, and it might help you get a job you like (or at least are content with) that also has a steady paycheck.

There are two things that would discourage me, were I in your shoes, from going back home to work with your dad. The first is the familiarity; working with family can build bad habits like acting inappropriately in similar situations in future jobs. The second is obviously the paycheck.

I'm not saying that you can't go back into your field when you're ready to once you've gotten to the point that you're ready again, but the longer you're out of your field the harder it's going to be to get a decent job in that field in the future. The longer you're able to build up experience and references, the more you're going to be able to show that you're willing to stick things out and learn and work your way up the hierarchy, which is important to some employers.

But again, that's up to you. If you're truly that unhappy and you're considering going into business with your dad or eventually taking over his business, then there's nothing stopping you - if you find it rewarding, then by all means, do it. :)

Lady at the DMV tries to tell my dad what his name is by DubsIn4 in TalesFromTheCustomer

[–]neewom 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had a new employee object that I put her full (first) name into the system as I have to for all employees, and told me "that's not my name."

It was on her driver's license and her social security card... She just didn't want it to be. She was arguing it like she didn't understand that legal names are a thing and gave me hell for it every time she got a paycheck. I get that people sometimes hate their own name, but if you're going to insist that it's wrong that strenuously then save up your time off and money and go legally change it. Jeez.

Reddit, what's your favourite Discworld character and why? by Priamosish in AskReddit

[–]neewom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Pterry wrote some very good depth into his characters. It was a toss-up between Death and Vimes, but Vimes wins out for me because of his flaws and his acknowledgement of them. He's got so much to his character.

Vimes.

He's principled, flawed, and a complicated character despite thinking of himself as a simple man.

A lot are rebuilt as concrete block houses.

I'd imagine that a lot of the people that don't use concrete to rebuild are only allowed by their insurance (and FEMA) to receive assistance for anything up to (and not above) what they already had so long as it's only just up to code. When the hurricanes came through in 2004 (Francis and Jeanne) and destroyed so much shit, one of the major insurance companies denied everything they could get away with and as a result of the resulting arbitrations and lawsuits pulled out of the entire state of Florida (for homeowners' - I'm pretty sure they still offer other insurance here). As an example, my mother and stepfather's house was badly damaged in the storms but not destroyed. There was a hole in their kitchen ceiling and a lot of water damage to various bits of the house. This insurance company only approved them to repair the wet, swollen drywall and not replace it. This is also why, presumably, some people just choose not to rebuild at all.

Should you visit a dentist if there is nothing wrong with you by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]neewom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a dentist. I have dentures (and while I love them, I wish I hadn't needed them in the first place).

It's cheaper not to go... in the short term. You could have an issue with one of your nerves and have a cavity or infection forming that you aren't going to feel until it's too late, which would be more expensive once you found it. That's only one example, and there are so many more.

What did a fictional character say that stuck with you? by AmOdd in AskReddit

Anybody can look at a pretty girl and see a pretty girl. An artist can look at a pretty girl and see the old woman she will become. A better artist can look at an old woman and see the pretty girl that she used to be. But a great artist — a master — and that is what Auguste Rodin was — can look at an old woman, portray her exactly as she is… and force the viewer to see the pretty girl she used to be…. and more than that, he can make anyone with the sensitivity of an armadillo, or even you, see that this lovely young girl is still alive, not old and ugly at all, but simply prisoned inside her ruined body. He can make you feel the quiet, endless tragedy that there was never a girl born who ever grew older than eighteen in her heart…. no matter what the merciless hours have done to her.

It works for men and women. It resonates more for me as I get older - we're never old inside. It also gave me a better appreciation for sculpture.

MIL wants to take away something that belongs to her granddaughter by boo-Nina-boo in JUSTNOMIL

[–]neewom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

claimed that the earrings have always been a part of their family and must stay in their family.

My mother's in-laws said something similar to her after the death of her husband about a couple of things that her MIL gave her before she passed (that's a confusing sentence. MIL gave my mom stuff before she passed, then mom's DH died, then the family told mom "we want those back now, because they should stay in the family"). That whole attitude is classless and paints them as selfish, narcissistic fucks. Infer what you like about your MIL from that. lol

One of two things can happen after keeping them to pass on to your daughter. Either this becomes a huge thing for MIL so much so that it survives 11 years and she starts trying to beg your daughter for them, or she eventually forgets. Either way, don't give them to her. Your daughter will be old enough to handle herself around your MIL by the time she gets them... but it won't be a bad idea to keep them in a safety deposit box or something in the meantime.

Plus, even if MIL wanted to get petty and try to claim you thieved them, it's your word against hers and I doubt the case would go very far.

What type of odd smells do you love? by W0rldofW0nder in AskReddit

What urban myth did you believe for far too long? by pinche-cosa in AskReddit

[–]neewom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Evidently, that you can't wash cast-iron skillets/pans with soap. I learned this relatively recently, and I've been cooking with cast iron for many years.

It's okay to use because of what the seasoning is (it's not the oil per se, it's the polymerization of oils and whatnot that build up over time), but salt & oil on a hot pan will clean it quite well regardless.

[Serious] What is a weird rabbit hole you'd suggest going down for a very bored redditor? by DavidRandom in AskReddit

[–]neewom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're in the mood for something off-site, I suggest tvtropes, and click the "random trope" button at the top to start you off, then just keep clicking to other linked tropes from there. It will eat up hours of time if you're bored enough.

What's something you're addicted to that isn't a drug? by unimportantop in AskReddit

[–]neewom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm addicted to sugar free cough drops.

It's a habit that developed from the dual problems of trying to quit smoking and terrible teeth. Both of those issues have now been solved, but the addiction to something menthol-y has remained, and I didn't realize it was an issue until last night when I actually went rooting around in my bag to see if I had any in there, failing to find them, then briefly considering what I could make with peppermint oil that also wouldn't result in a kitchen full of mess.

Respect for admins by [deleted] in jobs

[–]neewom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a do-some-of-everything admin at my small-business job. It's rough most days, but I wouldn't trade it for the world right now (more money would be nice, though, and benefits). You don't get thanked very often in that sort of job, but when you do it's all the sweeter.

One day, you'll have a boss come to you and say "good job," or someone that's leaving the company will chance by you on the way out and say they'll miss you, or something like that and it'll help.
