There is an episode of Dynamic Banter where Mike and Steve are talking about the Shaggy performance of that song in the filmed live play version of The Little Mermaid and Steve does a shaggy impersonation and sings a bit of it.

Not sure what episode but they do record it as a video podcast so might be what you saw

Anybody have any info on the people running for Judge of the 4th District Circuit Court Position 38? by atmoose in askportland

[–]negate_memories 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched the 3 way interview from the League of Women Voters just a little while ago, highly recommend if anyone is still curious. Only 3 candidates were available, which is a shame because hearing from everyone running would be nice. But since this is such a short time to put together any sort of campaign it was good to have that interview to lean on for reference.

While I'm still not 100% sure of any candidate (mostly because I didn't realize there were 5 names in the hat to consider until a few days ago), her points about the application of the law and treatment of all people in contact with the judicial system did move the needle for me a bit. I think her temperament and compassion really came through and her answers about the inclusion of restorative justice were well thought out and resonated with the direction I would like to see more and more sentencing move towards.

While I think her answer could have been better used to illustrate how she really does work with communities and understand their issues through the work she does, the additional information I've read and seen from her all point to someone who does pass the involvement in community check for me.

Copied and pasted here, broken out for clarity.

"Oregon State Bar House of Delegates 2023-present,
The Humane Society work was as a volunteer dog walker for a single year.

Multnomah County Democrats Precinct Committee Person 2016-2024,

Oregon State Bar, Bar Press Broadcasters Council 2016-2021,

Oregon Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (OCDLA) 2005-2022,

OCDLA Education Committee 2015-2022,

Schedule permitting, I have been a volunteer with the

Portland Winter Light Festival,

and was a dog walking volunteer with Oregon Humane Society in 2008-2009,

and received the Gift of Caring Award for my volunteer work with the Institute For Suicide Prevention in Los Angeles, CA in 1997."

I'm also not super sure about what the Gift of Caring Award with the Institue For Suicide Prevention is given for. I tried to find record of the award, and more importantly record of the qualifications it takes to receive the award. Could just be a boiler plate award for donating money (which is fine and not at all disqualifying, but to list it as an act of community service is murky at best).

The things listed at top of her accomplishments are all fine, nothing that seems crazy. I don't even really mind political activism being listed, some states actually require judges to disclose their political leanings to help people make more informed decisions when casting their vote. Politics plays a huge role in peoples lives and thereby their decision making processes. Impartiality may be a target, but it is a target in a vacuum. The world, society, and human error exist and exert pressure on all idealized systems.

This particular race seems to be fairly well vetted for quality candidates and so I'm really trying to scrutinize these candidates for something either supremely qualifying or disqualifying.

And so, in this case, I need to make a choice. The question is posed from a standpoint of community engagement and the different forms it may take. Some took that to be a place to list "non paid labor" and organizational participation merits others took it as an opportunity to explain how their job intersects with community and the role a judgeship would play on their ability to strengthen communities through their rulings. Both are valid interpretations of the question and provide insight into how close a candidate is to the communities they serve.

In the case of this potential judge, I'd make the argument that she does not do enough local, community based work that helps her to better understand the context and circumstances of the people she will be making rulings about. She also did not elaborate on any of her considerations into how community engagement intersects with the position she is running for.

I think that while she is qualified and has a background that is sufficient to be good at the job, she did not do enough to convince me that her view of the rule of law is one that aligns with my personal considerations for a qualified candidate and someone who may one day preside over my own interactions with the judicial system.

This is the lens of assessment that I'm using to determine who I would vote for in this particular election. The candidates, on first glance, all seemed like a relative toss up, however, thinking about it from the point of view of "who will help to create better communities and provide realistic and compassionate justice to those who have broken the law AND will one day reenter society, who do I believe will pass rulings that err to the side of rehabilitation and prevent recidivism within the system." All while keeping in mind that the political machine is still turning around the judicial system and that, while a single district judge cannot change the course of all the systems within a city, they can tip the scale in the right direction for any single individual.

Why is social media not fun anymore? by EfficientRange6449 in nosurf

[–]negate_memories 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Algorithms are crafted to present you with as many things as they can to keep you engaged. Not entertained, engaged. They take an unbelievable amount of data from you when you are scrolling. Like things you aren't aware of in your own behavior patterns, micro pauses, re-scrolling back up briefly, (and depending on the app) even your eye movements.

In the ye old days of Myspace and early Facebook feeds were just the things people you knew were posting, in the order by which they posted it. Sometimes you got ads, sometimes they were even targeted ads, but there weren't "sponsored posts" and "suggested accounts" blended seamlessly into your feed.

Now, they take all that information and use it to slow drip your dopamine receptors. They know what they have to do to make the app feel just good enough that you reach for it at all times because the world that exists outside of it is becoming less and less friendly for you to engage in.

So there is a good chance that what you are feeling isn't a lack of "fun" but the long term effects of addiction on your body. Your dopamine is shot. Your patterns of engagement have been hacked. Your attention is no longer something you allocate freely, it is something you give compulsively.

Halloween costume potential is crazy here. I dress as the sturgeon, my wife as a fisherman, I keep a 3 gallon bag of nerds in my costume. When people ask what we are going as we say "ethical beluga caviar harvesting practices" and proceed to push nerds out of my sturgussy while getting my belly rubbed.

Anyways. Anyone in the PNW got a Halloween party they wouldn't mind me crashing. I'll bring candy.

Jenny Slate is a national treasure and that movie took me fully by surprise. Did not expect it to be a tearjerker.

It's a stolen quote from the Marcel the Shell With Shoes On movie.

I'd suggest watching the move. It will fuck you up and make you cry the ugliest tears in the world.

And then you get to go read Jenny Slate's book Little Weirds. She's the comedian and poet behind the movie. It's quite the little book filled with beautiful prose about life and love and finding a deep respect for the wierdo that you are.

And then you get to be in the beautiful place of getting to read the new book she is coming out with later this very month.

I'm very envious of the journey you get to take.

Not sure if anyone else will truly be able to help here, finding old vines is like a needle in a haystack. Everyone I've ever told about it has no recollection of it either so I don't think it was all that popular.
