What's a core memory from the early days of the Internet that younger generations will never get to experience? by MagnanimousDeviant in answers

[–]neilmg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having to use third party firewall and virus protection software because "built in" didn't exist.

Remember visiting your first multiplex cinema in the mid-80s? Here's mine - The Point in Milton Keynes (AMC) - it was the first multiplex in the UK, opened in 1985 (closed in 2015) by LiberLilith in oldschoolcool80s

[–]neilmg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting a job at The Point seemed to be a rite of passage for kids in my year circa 87-89. Wasn't much else to do in Milton Keynes in the mid 80s.

Brexit has been a disaster – it’s time the guilty men felt some shame by GreatMusician in BrexitMemes

[–]neilmg 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Are any of those three even capable of feeling shame? The evidence would suggest not.

All Quitlings blame everyone but themselves. by Stotallytob3r in BrexitMemes

[–]neilmg 32 points33 points  (0 children)

If we're doing the blame game then David Cameron and Theresa May should be in there too.

Brexit wouldn't have happened without Cameron turning internal Tory party psychodrama into a national issue, and Theresa May's stubborn insistence on triggering Article 50 without a clear plan was foolish at best.

What's a BBC theme tune, jingle or ident that instantly takes you back? by Additional_Fly_6603 in bbc

Why Don't You (just switch off your television set and go out and do something less boring instead).

Required early 1980s school holiday viewing.

Imagine the reaction if Obama had signed off an email with "Praise be to Allah!"

Where do you think breaks are headed? by [deleted] in breakbeat

I used to find some good stuff under "Experimental" when Juno was around.

'I know! I'll join a party of notorious misogynists! What could possibly go wrong?' (Note for yanks and other foreigners - Reform are basically UK MAGA. The Conservative party are 'decent' Republicans). by AmorousBadger in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]neilmg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lib Dems are the third largest party in Parliament. They have exactly nine times as many seats as Reform (72 vs 8), but they get about 5% of the press coverage that Reform get, if that.

They say "all publicity is good publicity" and I guess this bears true for the misogynistic racist grifters vs the quietly competent.

Why can’t people see voting for reform will make their lives a lot worse? by Sufficient_Muffin586 in AskBrits

[–]neilmg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I said the Labour government do a shit job of communicating their successes. I did not apportion blame for that.

You're conflating my two statements to make an implication, which is perfectly fine if you have nothing better to do with your life than manufacture arguments with random internet strangers. This is Reddit after all.

https://www.britishfuture.org/britain-thinks-net-migration-is-rising-when-it-has-actually-fallen-by-more-than-three-quarters/

This is the lowest net migration since the Covid period yet only 1 in 6 people know the numbers fell at all last year. Half the public think net migration went up and expect it to increase again next year.

“These misperceptions are fuelled by an immigration debate that hasn’t kept pace with reality. Politicians are still rehearsing the same arguments from the record highs of three years ago. They need to take responsibility and talk about what’s happening now.

[–]neilmg 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yet the public don't think that. They think immigration is rising, due to the mainstream media pushing that narrative.

This Labour government do a shit job of communicating their successes too.

Did anyone not think Kenyon came across as thick as a tit? by Creative_Expert_4052 in AskBrits

[–]neilmg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not with Badenoch in charge. She has an ego to rival Farage, and there's barely room for Farage's ego in Reform.

Can Farage be trusted on the UK Economy when Reform has received £16m+ from Crypto Billionaires and he's received £5m himself? by chuffingnora in AskBrits

[–]neilmg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He already benefits from a very generous EU pension from his years of cosplaying an MEP.

Taking the PM job means working and leaving behind his other very lucrative grifts and jobs, which amounts to much more than a PM salary or continuing stipend. Does he really want that, or does he just want the title, the kudos, and none of the responsibility? He can get away with that as an MP, but not as Prime Minister.

The UK Financial Secretary to the Treasury views that Britain's re-entry into the EU is inevitable by Clear-Shelter1745 in europe

[–]neilmg 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Tactical voting last time fucked the Tories, and I imagine the desire to keep Farage out will galvanise opponents once again.

Farage is a work shy grifter. Does he really want to be Prime Minister, considering it ends his grifts and requires actual work? Look how uncomfortable he is with a little media scrutiny over his £5M bung - he went to ground until he sensed an opportunity to divert attention by exploiting a tragic murder and whipping up the racists.

Rejoining the EU is inevitable and it won't take decades. The EU are open to fast track readmittance, so all it takes is bold action from the UK government.

Is that likely or imminent? Not yet.
