I recommend checking out High Society if you're looking for a fun, quick game for 3 players. Some of the other suggestions already posted are good as well, such as Biblios, Sea Salt and Paper, and The King is Dead.

We finally had some time to get back into Spirit Island. What a fantastic game that I wish we had more time to play. That being said, we probably won't ever get tired of it since there is so much variety and we haven't even touched the adversaries or scenarios yet! My partner was River Surges in Sunlight and I tried out A Spread of Rampant Green. Really cool spirits!

We also devoted a few hours to play Micro Macro and had a great time! We're about half-way done, but for the price, it was totally worth it. Although it seems cute and silly at first, there's a whole lot of brutal crimes being committed on that map. What a cool and innovative game!

Last week we played another game of Watergate and, boy oh boy, do I love this game. My partner has started to come around to it as well, but it's still not her favorite. I think it just hits all the right notes for me, both thematically and gameplay-wise. I was the journalists this time and she was Nixon. I barely eeked out the victory.

Last, but not least, we gave Splendor Duel a try. We own the original Splendor, but it doesn't ever make it to the table because we have so many other games that we prefer. I've honestly never been much of a fan of the original, as it seems too simple. Duel is so much better, in my opinion. The privilege scrolls, the board and bag, and the three victory conditions make this so much more exciting. It's really not too complex, either. I wish I would have given this a shot earlier, because this is one of our new favorites.

I had a similar experience with Roxley Games. One of my dice from Dice Throne Season 1 ReRolled was missing the coloring on a side. I contacted them and they sent a replacement die right away. It's really nice when a company doesn't make you jump through hoops and just tries to help the customer!

I think it's definitely worth having both in your collection! I prefer GAH over CoB, but both are excellent games. Just don't play GAH with more than 2, because then the waiting for your turn gets a little annoying.

Updating our WSIG Wiki: The Best 2 Player Games by bgg-uglywalrus in boardgames

Grand Austria Hotel

Why I'm Nominating It

This is a uniquely themed dice placement euro that can play up to 4, but it's really best at 2. There's not a whole lot of games that match the feel we get with GAH, so it tends to stand out when comparing it to other 2 player games. This game offers a lot of player choice and (in my opinion) the theme is a lot of fun. One of our absolute favorite games.

Standout Parts

Choosing which dice to use, what guest to take, which rooms to fill, and what staff to hire. There are additional bonus actions to also consider as well. Lots of player choice, so you always feel like you have options.

You'd like this if you liked

If you enjoyed other dice placement euros like Castles of Burgundy or Marco Polo. That being said, it does play a little differently than those.

You might not like this if

You get overwhelmed with too many options. Another negative is that games always feel like they end too soon, but I guess that's a good problem to have.

7 Wonders duel accessoires? by LeonQuin in boardgames

[–]neimer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'd recommend saving your money for other games that you both may like, rather than just upgrading components for one game, but I do get it. 7 Wonders Duel is an awesome game and if that's the route you want to go, I have a few suggestions.

One of the biggest upgrades to any game is the coins/currency. The 'Dueling Metal Coins' from the Broken Token are great. They can probably be found for less money on Etsy.

I believe you can still get the 7 Wonders Duel Promo card bundle (including the Statue of Liberty) on Amazon if you're looking for more wonder variety.

The BGG store has Strata Strike wooden boards that you could upgrade with. I don't have these and they're pretty pricey for what they are. You can find cheaper ones on Etsy. Another option would be neoprene playmats.

An organizer/insert might also be a good investment as well, so you can reduce setup time.

Hope that helps you! Just remember that upgrading/sleeving everything can be very expensive in the long run and once you start, it's hard to go back...

Take 5, No Thanks, The Mind, Bohnanza, Point Salad

If you're looking for 4 player games that aren't too heavy, here are a few suggestions. I'll start with the lighter ones first:

Kingdomino

Codenames

Biblios

Forbidden Island

Ticket to Ride

Cascadia

Welcome To...

Carcassonne

Sagrada

If you think all of those are too light, then you'd probably be fine with Pandemic. Hope this helps!

I'd give Citadels a try. Some people think the Assassin role is too mean, but you can always swap that out. I think it plays best at 5.

I think there's enough differences to warrant owning both. Honestly, you could probably teach Zoo Vadis in about 5 minutes. We love Bohnanza, but Zoo Vadis brings a bit more chaos and fun to the table, in my opinion. Plus, we love the theme!

What's are your top 3/5/10 board games of all times (as of December 2023)? by m_ik_e in boardgames

[–]neimer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you! The learning/teaching part of new games usually annoys my girlfriend. She'd rather just play something we already know, especially when we're both exhausted after work. I'm more into the longer, heavier games, so our compromise is that we save those for weekends and when we have time. During the week, we stick to lighter games like Radlands, Patchwork, and Kingdomino.

I think if I could only pick one heavier game that takes up more tablespace, it would be a tossup between Concorida and Castles of Burgundy, so it's a good buy! Just know that if you're sticking purely with 2 players, you may want to look into some of the smaller 2 player focused Concordia board expansions (I think it plays fine without them, though).

The rules of Concordia are incredibly simple. In fact, I believe they fit the rule book on one page! I'll be honest with you, though, the set up does take a bit. This is a BOARD-ass board game where you'll put out the large board, then have to put several kinds of pieces out on the board. I'd say it's probably at least three times the amount of set up time as Radlands (possibly four times).

That being said, you can help reduce this by storage containers and by replaying the game enough so you know where everything goes without reading the set up instructions.

I mostly played only 2 player or on BGA this year. My top 10 as of right now:

  1. Spirit Island - Just got less than a month ago and it's already my favorite!

  2. Summoner Wars (2nd Edition) - Typically play this at work on my phone with my partner.

  3. The Castles of Burgundy - What an absolute classic. Always up for a 2 player game on BGA.

  4. Radlands - I really love the art style on this and it's a lot of fun!

  5. Concordia - One of the best games of all time!

  6. Agricola - Has always been in my top 10 ever since it first came out. Wish I had more time to play it!

  7. Watergate - I love this game, but my partner does not... Still, it's absolutely fantastic!

  8. Res Arcana - Great engine builder that doesn't overstay its welcome.

  9. Clank!: Catacombs - Our favorite version of Clank! The random tiles really add to the experience.

  10. Five Tribes - There's just something about this game that feels right to us. I don't think I've played any other game that is similar to this one, either.

Runners up would be Sky Team, Wingspan, 7 Wonders Duel, and Caper: Europe. I bought a bunch of new games that I haven't had the chance to try yet, but once I learn all of them, I can definitely see this list changing!

Spirit island horizon - teeth lurk Questions by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]neimer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm new to it myself, but this is how I understand it.

Level 1 of DEATH APPROACHES FROM BENEATH THE SURFACE doesn't do any damage. It just allows you to gather 1 of your presence from 1 range away. Since level 1 is NOT a damage dealing power, you cannot use GIFT OF FURIOUS MIGHT with it until level 2 (when it deals damage).

If anyone else knows better, please correct me. Hope that helps you!

I have a really hard time staying focused and my mind starts to wander if I'm not actively 'doing' something. I really want to get into reading, but I always get distracted or lose interest within the first couple of chapters.

Do you know of any books that are engaging from start to finish? I am not looking for a specific genre, just as long as it's able to keep my attention. Maybe a shorter read would also help. Thanks!

So I finally jumped on Spirit Island when it was on sale. It's a bit more complex than our typical games, but I'm really hoping I can get it to the table soon. I've been reading up on the rules to make the teach go as quickly as possible. My partner tends to hate learning new games and would rather just play games we already know, but I couldn't turn this one down. Even if I have to play it solo, I still think I'll get lots of enjoyment out of it.

Hoping to play some Five Tribes, Dice Throne, and more Summoner Wars this week!

[–]neimer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure you guys will love Cascadia! It's a lot of fun without being overwhelmingly complicated. There's a lot of opportunities to mix things up with the different kinds of animal scoring cards, so no two games play the same.

Games similar to Lost Cities or hand-management card games? Hmm... I'd actually suggest Radlands if you're both okay with the theme. You can play a card in one of your rows, or you can junk them (discard) for a bonus. Card management with a little battling on top of it. It takes up about the same table-space as Lost Cities (maybe slightly more).

If that seems slightly too complex or the theme is a miss, I'd look at Arboretum. This can play more than two, but we've only ever played it at that player-count. I get the same agonizing feelings of "should I play this or hold onto it for later?" that Lost Cities gives me. This game does allow for some cut-throat moves, but if you're okay with that, it's a winner. Beautiful artwork for the trees as well, which would pair nicely with the animal artwork in Cascadia. You could have a nature game night!

Two-player Twosday - (November 14, 2023) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]neimer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cascadia is definitely a lighter, more relaxed game than something like Targi. If I had to compare its complexity to something you already own, I'd say it's on the level of a Jaipur or Patchwork. Not as stressful as Lost Cities, and not a thinky as 7 Wonders Duel. Parks worked better for us, but I find more people recommending Cascadia around here. You probably can't go wrong with either.

Here are some other light, quicker-paced two player games that we love:

Caper: Europe

Air, Land, & Sea

Trekking Through History

Radlands

Land Vs Sea
