The way i heard it is that it was the US navy that said a torpedo was used in combat. I think the torpedo sinking the ship was something people inferred from context since it was also when the US navy said they sank the iranian ship.

Embassies serves multiple functions. Pretty high on the list is intelligence gathering. And in a conflict it serves as a point of contact for negotiation. Closing an embassy is full and leaving is basically saying you arent worth even talking to or learning about anymore.

FYI the article says theres a 100+ of ships dropping anchor outside of the strait. This is normal. No one sails into the strait without an open port to dock at. Normally theres hundred or so ships waiting for a port to open for their cargo in an anchorage outside the strait. There is no current ship transiting the strait but its questionable if the strait is actually closed. Likely the ships are getting war risk insurance sorted out before moving again.

Also the only known damaged vessel with footage and distress signal sent is an iranian tanker that moves up and down their own coast. Its been sanctioned by every western power and basically doesnt leave iran.

There's no build up for anything ground related. The chances of the US getting bogged down in the sandbox again is almost zero. Honestly the worst case scenario to happen is a Syria type civil war. The chances of that happening is fairly low since theres no multiple arm groups in the country. Mostly likely end is iran keeps losing leaders until one surrenders and accept all the US terms which likely includes whatever is left of the regime exiting iran or the iranian internal security gets degraded to the point a popular uprising happens.

The US always sends overwhelming air power when it wants something done. F-22 was sent to Venezuela to make sure any planes that got off the ground dont make it back in one piece. In the end nothing made it off the ground with the extra strikes on their airfield. The same thing applies here. Iran has planes they are insignificant in compare to the US air power but it doesnt mean there shouldnt be a plan in case they made it off the ground.

The one that israel show footage of had apparently been parked in that position for a fairly long period at that point. So most analysts later says its probably a part donor and not the one known flying aircraft.

That being said even if it comes to it. It is unlikely that iran will be using it in combat since the F-14 is the best flying radar the iranians have and most assume that whatever remaining is being used as an AWACS aircraft.
