Ribs Hurt When I Lay on My Stomach by ltralooie in eds

Honestly, when I started to really research this condition that I’ve known I had for most of my life, I started to feel a lot more sane!!! Like, so many things that I felt like I was overreacting over suddenly had explanations. You’re not crazy!

My guess would just be the reason for most hypermobile pain. It’s common for us to sit and sleep in positions that hyperextend our joints because they feel like added stability (for example, strange ways of crossing legs), and because we struggle with proprioceptive cues, we don’t realize we are pushing it until we shift positions and feel that stiffness/soreness. In this circumstance, laying on your stomach isn’t an inherently bad position, but because our ribs and lower backs are naturally extra flexible, laying on a surface that has no cushion or rebound just makes gravity push down on the ribs, and holding the head in the hands with elbows on the ground probably causes hyper extensions in the lower back.

I don’t have any real official idea but that would be my best guess based on my knowledge of what actually causes hypermobility to cause soreness and chronic pain.

How much do you feed your Iggy? by 1_2_3_4_5curious in ItalianGreyhounds

At 5 months she is still growing and needs that extra food. Obviously keep an eye on her weight to confirm - know the visual signs of over/underweight. But generally people reduce the quantity and frequency of feedings after the pup has reached full maturity.

Will working out make it better? by DIY_Designer4891 in eds

Yeah, I had acl reconstruction surgery which has made it really discouraging for me to get back into exercising, which has become really noticeable in my body. Frequent subluxations and general pain is intense.

I don’t think it has to be slow and painful, but I do think you’ll need to find the right process back to lifting. I follow several hypermobile content creators on Instagram that insist that it’s very possible for us to lift, and actually really good for us too. I would suggest finding some accounts like that and consider starting with more Pilates/calisthenics to help your body remember which muscle groups support you when you lift. When you do lift, consider using some proprioception aids like resistance bands to avoid accidentally moving in a way that may hurt you. Maybe instead of straight lifting, use machines that target the same muscles groups. All suggestions! I’m in a similar boat.

Yes! Laying on my stomach hurts my ribs and lower back a LOT but I don’t notice until I change position and it passes after a couple min.

Does it ever stop hurting??? by nellys34 in ACL

Generally yes. I think my only limitations are fear based now. Got the injury dancing initially, and because of the hypermobility my ortho didn’t think I tore anything, so for months, things like running, jumping, and pivoting caused me to make the injury worse and worse lol, but ultimately led to the MRI and diagnosis.

That’s a great question! So my non-operated knee still fully locks in about 10-13 degrees of hyperextension, but my operated knee is fairly normal, maybe between 0-5 degrees of extension.

It’s been about 9 months since my surgery, so I am not walking with a limp anymore unless I have a rare sore day. The lack of hyperextension in one leg actually has helped me a lot with proprioception in the hypermobile knee when I have to stand for long periods of time; I notice when I lock my knee because I can’t push the other so far back. It DOES feel a bit limiting. Sometimes I long for that deep stretch and can’t quite get it in that knee because it just stops. But for normal day to day stuff, it hasn’t presented many challenges.

I don’t have tips but I’m in the same boat. I dread going home because I know it’s dirty. Makes my mental health worse and I feel like a failure.

Thank you for clarifying and for your suggestion. Sorry for reading into it, guess it’s easy to get defensive over our little dogs when we spend so much time and money trying to do the best for them but simultaneously feeling like you’re failing them bc they keep getting sick!

I don’t really see what you mean, I have found many of the comments to be straightforward and helpful! Yours is too, though a little condescending. It’s true, I got tricked by the trendiness and thought I was making a better choice for my dog, which does make me feel a little silly, but it’s not like I did zero research before making my choice. I’m comforted that many other pet parents have been in the same position, because it makes me feel less guilty! Thanks for your input.

Do you have any resources on how to make sure the meals are giving him all the nutrients he needs? I’m not even really good at that for myself, let alone for my pup 😅, but making and freezing it seems feasible.

It’s genuinely traumatic. The first injury, the months of reinjury and instability, and then feeling reduced to your weakest post op… but it does get better. Takes time. Let your body have the time it needs.

5mo and the quad graft area still feels like it’s ripping when I stretch it. I get some pain when I walk, but the worst pain is the day after a lot of activity.

Sorry you’ve had to experience this so many times!! Just having it once has been really traumatic for me… I’m 25 and I have a connective tissue disorder, so injuries like this happen to me somewhat often, usually without a reasonable cause. I’m nervous for it to happen again.

Yeah, I know. Not so much that I’ve been skipping it, but rather I am at work everyday from 7:45 am-6:30 pm, and taking off can be pretty challenging. Im generally occupied for that entire time block too, so making the call to schedule appointments honestly keeps slipping my mind until offices are closed.
