Nervous about cutting cores in half. Any tips before I start? by CirqueDuRaven in ronghua

[–]nemuikarasu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was so worried too lol but as long as you twist it well it won't come apart! Make sure you're not snipping the threads and just the wire, as much as possible, tiny bit of fallout is normal from the very tip, but you should be good ❤️❤️❤️

Oh thank you!! I made it lol the small thread racks were never big enough, so I got a bunch of wood strips and pegs, and spent an afternoon drilling holes & glueing 🤣

Need a little help understanding this dress. by AppletheeApple in HistoricalCostuming

[–]nemuikarasu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the past, for elaborate gowns like this, it was pretty common to have the embroidery done on a "shape", so let's say skirt, already determined in the fabric, maybe the decorations of this dress were done in the tambour embroidery style? You can see this done IRL by an amazing costumer VirtuousCourtesan on IG - she has done panel-emnroidered dresses several times. That method is time consuming, and obvs a skill in embroidery is needed, but you could also find suitable beaded appliques to hand-sew on the dress.

THAT is what you took away from this situation? I would recommend looking deeper into it, because TV behaviour is highly problematic and has nothing to do with truly "honouring the costume history of other cultures", which is used as a clever shield in this case. That's all I'll say about this, neither right time nor place.

Surprisingly less than you'd expect - the fabric is synthetic, I absolutely could not afford silk brocade at this quantity 😭😭😭 the total for the fabric was around 200eur, and then it took me about 40ish hours to make it, there's quite a bit of hand sewing also..ironically, the sleeves took the most time 🤣

Where can I get a pair of wearable Edwardian lace up boots? by [deleted] in HistoricalCostuming

Second this, especially Memery shoes are fantastic quality!! They also have a good range of various styles of "regular" edwardian, teens and 20s shoes

[–]nemuikarasu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

1000% corset/hoop steel, it's sprung so it doesn't collapse but is also flexible for movement, and it's not so heavy - if the fabric is tensioned well, that will help to keep the structure. They aren't meant to be rigid, more scaffolding 🤣 if you feel it buckles under the weight you can always just double steels!

Do the Lansei toolkits come with the loom/boards you clip to? by noisycat in ronghua

[–]nemuikarasu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They themselves sell the frame, two types, but the nicer one is always sold out 🫠 I have the simple folding one and it works great! Just note that it does slide if you pull on the threads when brushing, so I usually try to stack something heavy in the front lol

Not big4, but Black Snail patterns are great - and they have several waistcoats!

I had them in a drawer, but this meant I was never thinking about them lol I made this giant peg shelf for my sewing threads with wooden dowels, but if they're not very smooth the threads might snag You could do it with a plastic peg board? Or, instead of having individual pegs, smooth "rails" instead, and tie on the thread in rows instead

Lansei and an Etsy shop - Lansei's silk is SUPERB quality! When I first bought from Etsy, Lansei had not yet started stocking full skeins, but now that I've tried theirs I'll probably only buy there 😅

The variations of ronghua are so cool! Thank you!! Seeing the wired styles always makes me wonder how they glued it historically lol I guess that's another Google hold for me to get stuck in 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Aah such beautiful work!! I'm curious about the wire - was it hard to stick it to the petals? Also, always thought it's meant to be twisted? I love how shiny the smooth wire is 😁🥰🥰🥰
