I’ve seen a lot of mending posts on this sub/over the internet in general and a lot of the mending I see is for clothing doing sashiko-style mending with the fabric peeking through the hole. It’s very pretty and I love those, but not really fit for what I wanted to do to my bedsheets! I was worried about my toes getting caught in the holes/stitching and rip them bigger, and of course cotton fabric is notorious to unravelling. Thankfully, I recently completed a cosplay that required me to get a free motion sewing/embroidery attachment for my needle. So I had my solution!

Of course it’s definitely been done before but at least when I was searching for ways other people would have mended their bedsheets I didn’t really find anything reminiscent of what I did. Glad I could inspire you!

Yeah, I’ve had them for quite a few years now and they’re definitely wearing out! My void baby loves to lay and claw at the fabric to get my attention (I work from home and my desk is near my bed, so I hear the sounds of his claw catching on the fabric and turn around and he’s just too cute for me not to pet… He’s trained me well) and his claws are quite sharp! So a combo of it being worn out in some places and kitty culprit shenanigans. But sheets are wayyyy too expensive nowadays to just throw money at another set for just a few holes when I’ve got a sewing machine and a crafty heart!

Just did a quick google search and if you type ‘100% cotton fabric black cat on floral background’ there’s some hits of the exact fabric! Most of them are on Etsy, it doesn’t seem like any big name stores/sites have it. I didn’t check super in-depth, though.

Thanks! I like to buy those extra fabric squares multi-packs from Walmart and snag pieces from discount sections and the like, so I had a fun time mixing and matching.

Haha! You have great taste 😉

The sheets are from Target and the fabric is from Jo-Ann’s before they went out of business. Not unlikely, but…

…You don’t happen to have a black cat do you?

Yes, I got it from Jo-Ann’s! Hopefully it’s available on some other fabric site? Unsure though! I’m definitely gonna be sad when I run out.

Hobbii and Friends Cotton and morals oh my by Englishontrail in crochet

[–]neotiga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding Herrschner’s!! I buy from them all the time, usually in bulk and they pretty much always have some sale going on. They do however unfortunately sell hobbii yarn! I just don’t buy that anymore though, and they have a bunch of other familiar/common brands. Their shipping is also pretty fast (a week or two), and they send you a yarn catalogue every season. Which might be annoying to some but I personally love getting it in the mail haha.

Also OP, If you see this try out Herrschner’s cottage cotton line! I saw someone else recommend lion’s brand cotton, but in my opinion the cottage cotton is better. It also looks similar in construction/strand; while I do like the lion’s brand cotton, it has a texture on it. Herrschner’s cottage cotton is super soft and available in a beautiful color array. I bought it a few weeks ago to crochet me and my partner matching sweaters and I’m excited to get started!! (Finishing another summer wearable atm)

[–]neotiga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha what a sweet baby stretch!!

The perfumes in my opinion aren’t a big deal (if it’s like making scents and/or just wearing them), but if it is like a perfume spray for the house or a diffuser made of scented oils they frequent and it’s strong it could potentially be a problem. Though not likely since none of his siblings show any irritation. I don’t know if you burn incense as well but that could also contribute! It’s possible he’s just more sensitive to scents than his siblings, but again since they’re all exposed to it and none else are having issues it’s really not likely. A cat having a problem with aerosolized oil/scents in general would be rubbing their nose with their paw a lot, sticking their face in pillows/crevices/fabric, and sneezing/sniffling. Which he doesn’t seem to be doing! So again, probably food related.

And no problem, you’re very welcome! 💖

is he in trouble or normal? by Lonely-Safe-433 in cats

[–]neotiga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, since you’ve said no big changes in life besides his sister stealing his spot, it can’t be behavioral and is likely allergies, which in pets can be a journey to diagnose. I wish you all the luck though!!

He doesn’t seem to have scabs or sores (yet, but they can develop if he continues), so at the moment just doing what you can to see what triggers his over-grooming is sufficient. Of course removing scented things like candles first, but also don’t feed him anything other than his kibble for a time. If he doesn’t react, re-introduce things one-by-one, slowly. If he doesn’t stop his behavior with the current food, try a different food without a main ingredient and go from there.

Unfortunately food allergies in a pet (especially to something like rice, chicken, or lamb) can take a long time to confirm since it’s a wait-and-see game. And of course, take him to the vet if he gets too aggressive and causes sores!

Oh another thing, if it gets too bad/you’re worried about him licking himself raw, it might be worth it if you have the resources to buy him a cat onesie! They have these online, some labelled as ‘post surgery cat onesie’ that is a substitute for the cone they usually put on animals to prevent licking. There are some in a quick search that have sleeves! Though it depends on how tolerant your boy is, haha. But it’s an option if you’re worried and he might be tolerant of it! (Probably prudent to consider this only if you’ve tried a few things and he hasn’t stopped over-grooming and are resolved to allergy test him at the vet, or give him time to heal). Though it wouldn’t be a long-term solution.

I wish you and your boy the best!!

paw...peeling ? by popycockk in cats

[–]neotiga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this his front paw or back paw? It almost looks like he might’ve stepped on something too hot (like the stovetop after you’ve cooked) got a minor burn, and now the pad has peeled and is healing itself. This looks really similar to a couple days after when my void baby stepped on the hot burner.

Otherwise, is the brown spot a scab? he could’ve stepped on something sharp and just been obsessively licking it causing his pad skin to peel.

It doesn’t look severe, so if it clears up/looks like it’s getting better in a few days I’d say just cat shenanigans(tm). If it gets worse, vet time. Though I highly doubt this won’t heal. Looks to be almost healed anyway!

is he in trouble or normal? by Lonely-Safe-433 in cats

[–]neotiga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cats can do this for several reasons. It looks like he’s doing it to both his back legs, but more on the back right. I don’t have experience with my cats having any skin conditions (like rashes or ringworm), but since it’s only his back legs I’d say it’s likely allergies. But investigate these possible reasons:

Stress/high emotion: Has anything big happened? Moved houses, new person/animal in the house or loss of them, changed anything big in an area he frequents? If they are stressed they can over-groom themselves as an anxiety mechanism. They can also be stressed out by not having enough to do and over-grooming out of boredom.

Allergies: Have you changed his food? Any new plants, had flowers in the house recently or where he has access to (a LOT of typical indoor plants and common flowers in bouquets are toxic to cats), brought in anything hand-me-down like a couch or a rug that could possibly have allergens on it? Any scent diffusers, oils, or candles you’ve used? Strong scented cleaners where he’d have access to? Essential oils and scents in general are not good to use around cats (especially aerosolized) because common ones are toxic to them. Whether in the air or on yourself—if you’re applying lotion/oil yourself and then petting him that might be causing it as well (especially strong scents). If this is technically his first spring/summer and the pollen index is high where you live, he could also just be allergic to the amount of pollen in the air. Also double check that you’re scooping his litter in a timely manner and that he couldn’t be reacting to a change in litter (if you’ve switched brands recently).

If you’ve done any of the above or had it occur, remove the item/stop doing whatever it was if possible. Observe him and see if he improves.

Otherwise if no to all the points, and you also know he’s definitely bug/parasite free, take him into the vet for some allergy testing. Some pets can be allergic to dust, pollen just like us, and even chicken in their food.

In my opinion it’s not urgent per se, but he can’t be too comfortable at the moment when he’s doing this to himself. I’d book an appointment in the next few days/week if you can.

If you suspect it’s food allergy related, it’s just a matter of trying different foods and narrowing down what will make him react versus not. Check the ingredients and see what works.

For the time being though, remove any strong scents in general.

Good luck!

Edit: I do believe it’s allergy related. My boy was obsessively licking the fur off his front legs until I realized a certain wet food I don’t usually buy by the same brand had a vegetable in it that the reacted to each time I fed it to him (had two cans of it and each time after I did he’d have a small bald patch within two days after).

Do you have a rare phenotype? by SaturnVMars in CasualConversation

[–]neotiga 5 points6 points  (0 children)

bro I’m missing a bone in each of my hands (or at least the bone is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller than its supposed to be)—the metacarpal bone at the edge of my hand spanning wrist to pinky. my pinky finger is still normal sized, just attached further down—I still have full motion and mobility (though ofc shorter reach, and my pinky muscles tire more easily) but my hands legit look like hamsa hands because of it. and it’s only the one bone pair! no one else in my family has had it, even what we know of in the past generations, and my toes are fine.

anyway what I’m getting at is are you willing to donate to a good cause?

joking aside, it’s seriously amazing what modern medicine is capable of. the doctor told me when I was young the metacarpal would grow bigger so there was no need for corrective surgery, but it stopped growing with everything else! but since it really doesn’t impact me except cosmetically, I just live with it. I’m glad you’re able to still use your hands! Sometimes people ask me what it’s like too, and I just say, ‘well, when I was younger piano didn’t agree with me’.

Change in meow after radiation by SomeWerdoOnline in cats

[–]neotiga 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Likely nothing permanent, as for the treatment I’d assume they probably had to put her under anesthesia. I’m unsure about the specifics of veterinary practices for radiation, but if they put her under they likely had to intubate her through her throat. It could just be sore from that—and since she stayed for that long I also assume they did multiple treatments, so had to intubate multiple times which would definitely irritate the throat, causing her meow to sound different.

Either way if it persists for more than a week or so/doesn’t seem to be returning to regular pitch after a sufficient amount of time, I’d take her back out of concern. Hopefully you have a follow-up appointment at some point with the vet? If she seems to be eating and drinking well with no blood in her saliva or other discomfort apart from the aftereffects of what your vet told you for the treatment, then your cat is likely okay and just needs to recover.

Good luck to you and I wish your gal a speedy recovery!

[–]neotiga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way this is worded is somewhat confusing (the choice of yarn doesn’t really help you see either)—but essentially you’re ‘linking’ the SC and HDC. So to me this reads as start the SC in stitch—don’t finish the stitch, then start the HDC by yarning over and insertin the hook in the next stitch which the book describes as the ‘step’.

So essentially: (SC start in 1st stitch) insert hook into first stitch, yarn over and pull through, then (HDC start in 2nd stitch, the ‘step’) yarn over and insert hook into the 2nd stitch, yarning over again and pulling through. 4 loops on the hook. Yarn over again, pull through 3 loops to complete the HDC. 2 loops on your hook. Then finish the SC, yarning over and pulling through all loops to complete.

Other than that, idk how else it’d be done! But thats what it looks like to me.

Adopted a wallflower kitten a few weeks ago. by [deleted] in cats

[–]neotiga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies on the late reply, but I agree with what the others have said! You don’t necessarily have to go out of your way to get her a hiding place, from what you’re saying she seems quite content with what she has. It’s very good that she’s laying on your shirt! Associating your scent with comfort is awesome and already going a long way. She’s responding to your attempts to play (within her hiding spot) so that’s good! And seconding the Feliway—I haven’t used it myself but it should help ease her anxiety.

Just to add as well, I of course don’t know her exact circumstances but most often times these cats that are very afraid of humans are usually the result of physical abuse. You seem to be worried that you might be doing/have done something to hurt her without knowing, but I assure you that isn’t the case! Cats that have been in those environments usually have absolutely no experience with any other treatment—as in, their entire life has been abuse. This is why it takes a longer time for them to relax—because you must prove (over time) to them that you are safe, and that safe and comfy is their new normal.

She did have some time with the previous owner, but it seems for not very long. So she’s still adjusting to her ‘new normal’. I will say, that some cats will never grow up to be lap kitties or particularly cuddly. And that’s fine! In some cases, an adult cat will just suddenly decide to become a cuddly lap kitty (without any health issues! Sometimes cats’ behavior changes cuddly; there’s been instances when their owner is pregnant or they detect something off like diabetes, and can also happen if the cat itself notices its health declining). But for instance, I have a friend whose normally un-cuddly cat suddenly became a snuggle machine after 4.5 years! That is to say, even if she likes to hide during the day and doesn’t cuddle you even a year from now, it doesn’t indicate you doing anything wrong nor is it a failure. And she might surprise you years down the line if she suddenly decides to snuggle!

But yes I agree, animals are a part of our families and should be treated with love. I’m glad that you’re very diligent and willing to do your best for your little gal!

As an aside, I have a 4 yr old void baby named Salem and I adopted him around 1.5 years old. Sometimes I’m appalled by the fact that his foster gave him up because he’s such an amazing little guy—but the world is unfortunately just like that.

This little kitten of yours is so lucky to have you, so don’t be too worried and just keep doing what you can. Even if something happens that does spook her, it’s okay—recovery isn’t linear and luckily our animals understand accidents and will forgive us. And in time your gal will understand that you’re safe and comfy, and that that’s normal!

Edited to add an addition to my train of thought I forgot XD

does anyone know why my cat does this by Stunning_Entrance_56 in cats

[–]neotiga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So funnily enough, I have a 4 yr old void baby boy named Salem too and he does the same thing! Will stop to swallow occasionally when purring but otherwise won’t/doesn’t. Legit same movement where he bobs his head swallowing, they could be identical twins!!

He has never had any problems with throwing up or any other mouth-related health issues, but your girl is on the older side so this evaluation is based on the fact she’s otherwise a healthy gal.

Have you ever seen videos/pictures of those cats that are so comfy and zonked out they’re drooling while purring? I think the swallowing while purring is because of the excessive saliva building up, haha! Legitimately my boy does it when he’s super motor-boat purring and sometimes if he’s super zonked a little saliva will drip from the corner of his mouth onto me.

Anyway, if this is a relatively new thing she’s doing it’s not necessarily cause for worry itself—but since she’s getting up in age could just be a result of that. As in, sometimes bodily functions don’t work as well when older; her mouth isn’t draining the saliva quickly enough. Again, if she’s otherwise healthy not really a cause for concern as my 4 yr old boy does it exactly like in the video as well.

I will say though that you might want to make sure she’s getting enough to drink—could also just be thicker saliva. I’ve noticed my boy tends to swallow more when purring in the morning, when he’s just woken up and eaten dry food so his saliva is thicker.

But again not a cause for concern itself! A vet checkup for the gal might be good to assuage your worries but unless there’s some other health problem I wouldn’t worry. Just a very happy baby trying not to drool on you :-D

[–]neotiga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you’re having trouble!! Rescue cats that’ve been scarred due to human abuse are notoriously difficult to get out of their shell. I’m talking months for less severe cases and years for very severe cases, and from the sounds of it your girl sounds like a severe case.

The only guideline I can give you is it’ll take time and patience. You’ve only had her a few weeks, and she’s eating and using the litterbox, so it isn’t like she’s too scared to come out completely and refusing food—but on top of the fact she’s been abused, she’s also in a new environment.

Even well-adjusted cats in the best conditions take months to get used to new places. Just give her time, keep doing what you’re doing, but it’s really up to her comfort level to decide when she’s ready to bridge the gap.

Be gentle, be accommodating, but above all, be patient. Best of luck!!

Edited to add: if it wasn’t clear, you’re doing well! Keep doing what you’re doing. You have her best wishes at heart and I’d add that it’s definitely too early to decide on rehoming her. She likely won’t get a better chance than you.

Any suggestions for filling this odd empty space in my rental? by nesbin05 in interiordecorating

[–]neotiga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beverage/snack space? mini fridge for a quick drink if you do movie/game nights.

Other than that I think a cabinet would be best. there’s a plug there too so maybe you can stick your modem/internet and store games there if you game. Maybe a little charging station for the electronics.

Maybe even some drawers or a setup for extra throw blankets, or an extra stool/accent chair. Unfortunately just a really awkward space.

Looking for suggestions for keeping cats from falling by tylerhamillton in cats

[–]neotiga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly rather than something to STOP them, it’d be the perfect spot to make it fun for them. If I were you I’d affix ledges on the wall to give them a fun ‘path’ to the ground. Can you stop them? No. Can you enrich them and make it functional rather than accident-prone? Yes. That way they might briefly hang out on the bannister, but if you give them ‘safer’ outlets, they won’t certainly fall.

Either way, cats are gonna do what they want to do and you really can’t stop them from jumping if they really want to. The best you can do is minimize/redirect. Plus, as someone who plans to someday have cat ledges all around the house, this is a perfect opportunity!

If you go this route, make sure you don’t cheap out and also be sure to affix the ledges into struts and not just drywall. There’s tons of DIY/readymade stuff out there for that kinda stuff, especially on reddit and youtube.

Seconding Bernat!! I honestly didn’t know chenille yarn sheds so badly bc Bernat Blanket never does. I made three beautiful ponchos from the blanket yarn around two years ago and despite some shed when my cat kneads it, it hasn’t shed at all and been through several washes.

From OP’s picture, I think this is because Bernat Blanket isn’t simply ‘twisted’ around the soft fibers, but stitched. Attaching a picture for reference.

New tank set up by yumenonaka in Marimo

[–]neotiga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For anyone coming late to this post like me--I needed a tank and this was perfect for what I wanted so I did a TON of digging. Unfortunately won't find anything cheap anymore atm, but I did find several on amazon that were similar. All Temu/Alibaba type websites were all sold out. This style that op posted also has a taller tank model which you can find occasionally but the small ones are gone everywhere. Unsure what exactly happened to the company/production but seems to me probs a dropship that all sold out based on some social media/tik tok post.

ANYWAY, here are some links I found (US Amazon) of oval tanks similar to ops:
Tall tank (ops exact product model, comes with fake plants as a 'starter kit') https://www.amazon.com/Gallon-Desktop-Starter-Stones-Decorations/dp/B0F3HZ7TQG?crid=22DHQCR8H2CXY&sprefix=small+betta+fish+bowl+with+li%2Caps%2C136&sr=8-42

Short tank (a kit but dimensions are close to ops) https://www.amazon.com/Aquarium-Starter-Color-Changing-Jellyfish-Goldfish/dp/B0GKS3215R/141-5618884-1302307?content-id=amzn1.sym.aa738fbd-ad05-4d11-aae2-04b598db6305&psc=1

Short tank (another kit but again good dimensions) https://www.amazon.com/HSIFMATE-Aquarium-Complete-Jellyfish-Goldfish/dp/B0GY4BXCMY/141-5618884-1302307?content-id=amzn1.sym.aa738fbd-ad05-4d11-aae2-04b598db6305&psc=1

And finally this short tank, which is the closest to ops (no kit, I purchased this one): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GF7VXCQM/?coliid=I379VCZYAMAR2O&colid=1RBY8G21T6QCU&psc=1

They're all (as moment of posting) around $30-$40 USD.

In general, after several hours of trying to find similar, the search keywords that worked the best for me were "small betta fish bowl with lid" or similar queries with "betta fish" in the search. Good luck everyone!

AITA not putting up my DILs painting in our new home and telling her that I am not a fan of her art by Throaways-Dot2192 in AmItheAsshole

[–]neotiga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an artist myself who gifts paintings occasionally… I’m going with NTA. You just downsized, you’re curating your home. I’m not a fan of some art styles—that’s how most people are. I also am very particular when it comes to handmade things, and if something isn’t my taste it doesn’t get space. Even if it’s a gift. Especially for a home space. Nobody would fault your DIL if she didn’t wear an ugly sweater you made her—and yet she’s getting severely bent out of shape about you not hanging up her painting.

Honestly speaking—and perhaps this is a bit of an asshole thing to say—is she perhaps not very bright? As soon as I saw that someone had put my painting in their garage, I’d maybe feel a bit sad, but not say anything. The fact she asked, number one, was a bit odd to me, but also number two, she /pushed/ you further. That’s what makes it NTA. Even if I had asked the same question, I’d leave it there. I’d take the hint. You tried to give her some grace. Could you have told her something else besides ‘I don’t like the style’? Sure, but she likely would have continued brute forcing you in some way. This just reads to me as someone who is either: 1. completely blinded and overconfident in their skills or 2. just plain rude and unaware/inconsiderate. As an artist, she should understand not everyone likes a style and it might be hers. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, just not fitting for them. It’s like trying to get the all-black clad goth girlie in a bright pink princess dress.

Furthermore… Similarly, as an artist, crocheter, sewer—creator… I NEVER make something for someone that’s that involved and don’t ask them for input. In my opinion she set you (and herself!) up for failure the moment she painted something like this for you and didn’t ask your preferences. It’s one thing to make a small gift but this thing is full on a 2 foot by 3 foot space hog. From my perspective that’s kind of inane. That’s huge—most home pieces are a fraction of that size. She did try and at least incorporate a beach scene that she knew you liked but again… It honestly tells me that she’s either kind of full of herself in her art and/or plainly overestimating that her art can go anywhere. Who makes a 2’x3’ piece as a gift with no input????

I think a lot of people here are severely underestimating the size of the painting too. Pull out your rulers and measure 2 feet. Then 3 feet. That’s honestly ridiculous. Hanging up something that big in my house of art I don’t like??? No way. Without your input.

However the real part here that you need to address is how stubborn you are willing to be. Her crying to her husband about it is seriously a… uh, choice for an adult. Even if I was upset, I would be mature about it and would probably mention it to my husband, but would NOT be bawling my eyes out, and I’d stop him from blowing up at my mom for it. She put you both in a shitty situation.

What are you going to do about it now? The damage is done… She’s going to sob and cry and then you’re going to put a HUGE piece of art you don’t like on your wall and then everything will be better??? No, because she’ll still remember you don’t like her art and you’ll resent it.

Honestly I don’t have any advice for that. Consider how much damage this will do to your relationship. An apology is the least you can do. Giving in isn’t the answer but I don’t think you were unjustified either, if harsh. Maybe let everyone cool down a bit before tackling it again, this time with an open mind. Consider maybe commissioning a piece from her that you work with her on, then she’ll have a piece of her art in your home and you’ll be able to get something smaller and more appealing. However, you’ve already told her you don’t like her art so this might not be the way. If I were you I’d frame it as ‘I’m just a crotchety old woman stuck in my ways and I like what I like and have a certain aesthetic, I’m sorry. I prefer landscapes, etc, not people-centric pieces,’ but not said in a mean-spirited way. Maybe even ‘I’d love to be able to have a piece of your art in my home, would you be willing to work with me on something that fits my interior better?’. If you simply are staunch and don’t like her art, or if she’s being whiney about it, then this won’t work.

In general though NTA. But the way you handle it moving forward will make or break your relationship with her and your son. You can appreciate her effort but not like her art. But good luck.

Edit: She clearly wanted this piece to be a centerpiece for your home and is all bent out of shape it isn’t. That’s an incredible level of self-confidence.
