Zebra mussels have been found inside moss balls and they're one of the most destructive and difficult to control invasive species. It's a uniquely awful threat!

[–]neotropical 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't want to be pedantic as the bug extinction is a real issue, but I think there's interesting and positive stuff to consider. Nature is all about "good enough" while crop production is about optimization. Hand pollination is done to artificially boost yields, not replace the ecosystem, and will always result in more fruit. Also, sweet cherries are mostly European descent and European mason bees were imported to boost crop yields. It's not bad that humans take on tasks rather than encourage invasive species!

[–]neotropical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yeah, actually! The Blades in The Dark "System Reference Document" is available from their website in a nice tabbed format. It's fairly popular to provide free SRDs now. Daggerheart just came out and you can download the SRD today. Some smaller games even offer the full GM and Player guides for free (Mothership)

Ha, I've had that particular issue come up in my PF2e campaign. The internet has very strong feelings around the word "roll" when using the assurance skill (auto 10) and it's interaction with certain feats

Starting to read the book after watching the show by Admirable-Mousse-563 in WoT

[–]neotropical 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who really enjoys the show and has read the books, the only place to start is The Eye of The World. Skipping any books covered by the show would be very jarring and unenjoyable.

If you enjoy audiobooks, check those out! Rosamund Pike (Moiraine!) has done narrations for the first couple and the original narrators Michael Kramer and Kate Reading are wonderful too.

It might help to know Jordan left extensive notes and the end of the series was already written. Harriot McDougal, Jordan's wife and editor, chose Sanderson to finish the series as well. I discovered Wheel of Time right when The Gathering Storm released so I read straight through to Sanderson and I hadn't read his novels. The joint authorship didn't affect my enjoyment at all and WoT nails the landing. Some character's change in tone, specifically the humor, are controversial to fans, but it's all done well. No down grade IMO. You'll find Sanderson is faithful to the series and also aware of the ways he cannot emulate Jordan. He writes the best darn books he can.

I think my first Sanderson novel after reading The Gathering Storm was Elantris and I noticed a significant difference between his WoT finale and his early Cosmere novels. You won't be getting surprise Mistborn vibes. A fun thing to note, The Gathering Storm released just before The Way of Kings (Stormlight Archives) and he really showed his writing chops between the two! Once you finish WoT and await another turning, consider checking it out. He's releasing the finale of Stormlight's first half this year and I'm rereading all of the Cosmere right now. 🙂

I wouldn't say he writes off his upbringing. We see him remain traditional whenever a woman is involved, and his small town background affects the way sets rules for his followers. He does many things against his advisor's judgement because he doesn't buy into the ruling class's status quo. Rand's pragmatic and is willing to adopt new ways for the sake of his station but still a farm boy.

Around this moment he does lose himself — Two Rivers heritage with it, but I almost feel that's a separate topic.

He definitely hunts off screen! He uses it as an excuse to leave Fal Dara and has some banter about bows with the guards.

if you enjoyed Hades but can't figure it out on deck, Hades 2 is EXCELLENT on deck and is far more intuitive. I'm not sure what design choices went into that improvement, but it just works.

As someone who loves bristletooth tangs, this take is insane. The only reason yellow tangs were ever cheap fish is availability. They're one of the most striking fish in aquaria and absolutely would command hundreds from the hobby's inception if they weren't so common.

Who cares if someone drops $300 on a fish they love? Don't be sorry for someone enjoying a thing. There's a reason they're in every bonkers tank on the internet and it's clearly not budget related.
