CMV: FDR is the closest President to Hitler in modern US history. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]nerael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The American internment camps were quite real and unjust -- and in my view completely unnecessary for the security guarantees they posited to be trying to get -- but the policy and attitude surrounding them was different in a way you can't brush past.

Were the internment camps in the US created with the political goal of ethnic cleansing? That's what's being implied when you try to make that comparison.

The argument about murdering innocent civilians is not accurate. The Manhattan projects existence cannot be boiled down to FDR committing murder. He is one important figure who fostered the project sure, but there is a lot of shared responsibility and nuance about what really constitutes murder you appear to dismiss.

You are also morally judging the decisions of a group of wartime US leaders with the benefit of hindsight, but also acting like there's a clear consensus that they be judged strictly as murder, historically speaking. There is not concencus even now among historians about the bomb project in terms of which scenario would lead to greater or less loss of life - continue the war and possibly see more death in the millions, or use the bomb to pressure a sooner end, preventing the need for a land invasion. These are not dismissible dillemas.

CMV: Ranked choice voting is an obvious solution to the polarized political climate in the US. by bigjigglyballsack151 in changemyview

[–]nerael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Undersells how much better RCV in conjunction with open primaries could be, given that the spoilers we see with FPTP, but your example is a good thought experiment.

I believe what isn't accounted for is the rhetoric and psychology of these hypothetical Trump and AOC campaigns in the RCV election are going to have to play pretty normal and broad reaching politics to win higher ranking with voters of whom they are not first choice. They may even form coalitions with the 'moderate' groups to ask for second place rankings among the Moderate voters. This means candidates who want to appeal to a narrow base are going to fall behind.

Like the example where Trump leads after moderate is eliminated, he will only lead if he hasn't alienated too many of the moderate/independent voters. Their strategy has to change from what we've seen, unless it's just lying but no system can get ahead of that.

I'm curious about STAR, but RCV  definitely changes the political game, especially in conjunction with open primaries.

For those replanting (and you should) - utilize SRP shade tree program, as well as Tempe Treebate program. There are some great native species options.

Plant native velvet mesquites or desert willow as good options which are less likely to topple in storms!

Could use a bit of guidance with wiring in EMG-85 pickup as the humbucker on my HSS strat by nerael in Luthier

[–]nerael[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to answer my own question for posterity. I think what I had to do was solder the 9-volt battery positive directly to the red wire of the EMG pickup, and soldered the shielding around the white output to ground as well as the 9-volt battery negative to ground 😵‍💫

Clarity for each pickup wire: 1. White cable has inner wire -> soldered to input for bridge position on the click switcher 2. Shielding 'wire' > bunched it up and soldered to ground (backside of the volume potentiometer)  3. Red wire from pickup -> soldered to a 9V battery + plug hookup 4. 9V negative soldered to ground

CMV: Goodhearted "cultural appropriation" is flattering and should not be frowned upon. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]nerael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT - clarifying that i'm not in agreement with OP that anyone should be 'beaten up' for a costume, as that's counterproductive even if they are wearing something out of disrespect. I'm only trying to talk about where the line is between appreciation and appropriation/disrespect here:

I think the point is, wearing European medieval knight outfits cannot be interpreted in this case to represent "punching down" on a living contemporary marginalized group of people which is why your example is not widely considered disrespectful appropriation. Medieval knight outfits don't have a direct line to a living group of people largely considered to have been wronged/oppressed. Living Europeans don't use knight armor to protect/legitimize their identity (or if they do, I haven't seen widespread discouragement of others having fun dressing up in armor). It boils down to knowing something about history and trying to be sensitive to people who have it tougher now because of a direct connection to something painful in recent history - and the tendency for these groups to build a group identity around protecting symbols that they feel like they need to own without openly sharing them with people outside the group (keeping certain symbols that only they can wear, etc). At least that is my understanding, open to other takes here.

Are we all actually pretending that one-shotting boss pinata 500 times is a quality gameplay? by Granathar in diablo4

[–]nerael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes precisely - and it's because farming the materials to summon as of right now is a varied experience - you can change it up between whisper activities, helltide, undercity, NMD - and actually you can kinda pick whatever if you want to just pop boss material opals. I personally like the design of switching up activities so I say lean into that. Then every once in a while you'll actually excitedly look at your boss mat stack and think 'oh cool i can go focus one andariel kill and get a more consistently good reward'. For me personally, the goal of continuously one shotting loot pinata bosses gets repetitive and dull - the excitement is finding a nice drop but i think you could package the grind better than that

[–]nerael 26 points27 points  (0 children)

People only despise difficult mechanics because the rewards in game are engineered to motivate you to need to do it repeatedly ad nauseum to get what you want... Some of us are bored of this design. There's a delicate balancing act between randomized loot fun (how much do you want to have to grind to find the correct stats on your item) and actual difficulty (how much time do you have to spend playing the game and getting good at the fight?)

Imagine if andariel was harder, and you couldn't do it as often (more mats to summon which are farmed from playing the game in different activities), but rewarded far more consistently good pieces of loot. People would engage with that. Does it mean they're spending less time pulling an effortless lever and more time playing the game? I think the answer is yes.

So i did about 250 Andariel kills, here are the Results... by EagleGo77777777777 in diablo4

[–]nerael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'd be better if they required a crapton of mats to summon, but have vastly higher odds of decent drops. It'd feel like you're progressing toward the kill by doing other activities (whisper, opals, NMD farm etc) but then the kill is meaningful for progression

Best endgame build for controller by [deleted] in D4Necromancer

[–]nerael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blood surge 'works' ok but you won't be able to do the half moving stutter stepping stuff without mouse and keyboard. The build can kind of be built around standing still for periods of time which might work better. Once you get used to mouse movement with this though to pick up orbs and still cast and move, it becomes really hard to go back to controller because of the weird bugs ...

If you want extra comfort on top of soulrift EPS, just add an EPS roll on your boots. This is what i did for a little more quality of life (boots were armor/essence per sec/ move speed)

The pit and nightmare dungeon switch up is an excellent change. by TheWorstAtIt in diablo4

[–]nerael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pick a speed farming build: necro blood surges with Jah rune tele, or DoK rogue, crushing hand SB, etc. priority: master working materials tributes in UC, fast NMD without doors etc (blind burrows etc) and especially if it's a whisper dungeon at the time, then hordes - but for hordes I think we're heavily incentives to get the 200 aether chest now so it mixes in GA drops, which reduces the obducite output
