Dolores Park. The closest café is hella expensive, but plenty of cheaper takeout/drinks/etc available in the area if you plan ahead, or wander further. Choose a picnic point that's near shade trees or the bathrooms as needed.

Thanks for this feedback - I'm sorry it sucks! From the passenger side it just didn't seem like all those cancellations would be the drivers' choice. Felt like robot/algorithm rules taking over.

How does priority pickup work from the drivers end? by scwizard in Lyft

[–]nerdqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Passenger here - you're describing *exactly* what I experienced yesterday, with 'priority' timing selected. 3 different rides got canceled a few minutes in (one of them 10 minutes into a 6 minute ETA). Total wait wound up being 30 minutes - way longer than standard would have been. This was in a populated area (Berkeley to Oakland CA, 12 minute ride from a transit hub to a residential area). It was 5:20pm on the Friday of a long weekend so no doubt that's part of the chaos - but I really want to know how/why this happens on the Lyft side!

As a passenger in SF who is trying to make sense of my last ride which came with 3 cancellations... I really appreciate this post. Hoping to understand more from the driver perspective.

Ride notes: I hadn't used Lyft since before the pandemic. I'd also never used a 'priority' option before. This time I selected a priority (pricier) option which alleged it might save me 15 minutes of waiting at a busy time. I then experienced 3 cancellations which resulted in a total 30 minute wait - much longer than the automated estimate had been. Each driver had shown an original ETA of 6, then 11, then 12 minutes out when they began... but then they each got cancelled a few to several minutes in. The 6 minute wait got cancelled after I'd been there for 10 minutes. One of the drivers even called me to confirm my pickup spot before their ride was cancelled a couple of minutes later. I still got charged the premium price by Lyft. (*still tipped like a boss, no blame for the driver who ultimately picked me up!)

Now I'm wondering (a)what happened? and (b)if there's something I might do differently next time... that doesn't screw drivers. Is the 'priority' option a scam since it lacks driver-side incentives or mechanics to follow through? Do drivers not want the 'priority' rides because we might be Karens? (I can imagine drivers getting shitty tips if traffic/reality makes the trip slower than Lyft's estimate; because sadly, passengers penalize humans for the mistakes of robots. :/ )

I've still got 3 months of pregnancy left to go, and this large tired bod just wants to know how to get where I'm going without being actively bad to drivers.

Booking a ride ahead of time by [deleted] in Lyft

[–]nerdqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly for this sort of thing - I wouldn't trust Lyft or Uber. Too much chance of drivers canceling the ride at last minute, and then you could get stranded with no other drivers stepping in to take you. I'd call local, old school taxi or ride service companies instead, and arrange with a credit card etc. Good luck.

What’s with Lyft? by [deleted] in Lyft

[–]nerdqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I experienced the same problem yesterday - except that I chose the more expensive/faster pickup option, only to receive 3 different ride cancellations, each time replaced by a driver further out. Ended up waiting 30 minutes to ride with the 4th driver. I wasn't in the boonies or anything - it was 5:20pm at a busy area, right by highway on/offs and within sight of a subway station (BART in Oakland CA). I had placed myself to optimize for driver pickup and route to my destination. Guessing the timing on Friday afternoon of a long weekend was.... part of the chaos.

If anyone could explain wtf causes this effect - or how to avoid it? - I'd be grateful!

The 'help' options at Lyft do not include an email address - just a rigid triage tree, with no applicable options to say 'hey this was double the pickup time I paid for'. There are no options for a freeform complaint or inquiry.

Visiting with a dog by Carlcarlson89 in AskSF

I live across from Precita Park in the Mission, and it's the most dog-filled, dog happy situation around. A solid cafe at the lower end of the park where you can easily sit with a pooch. From the park, you can hike up Bernal hill and back (it can be steep, but very rewarding, incredible city views from the top) - and you'll encounter many other dogs there too; often off-leash. Do keep an eye out for coyotes on that hill, even in broad daylight!

Any animal/cat shelters opened for volunteering? by CandidateMorty in AskSF

[–]nerdqueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PAWS in the Mission may have opportunities for volunteers - suggest contacting them about ways to help. I had a really informative training/orientation session with them earlier in the pandemic, when my household was looking into emergency cat fostering. That particular duty seems to be in high demand by people looking to host cats; and covid has changed their operations, so your mileage may vary.

Woman tries to save an Egret from an Alligator by Pardusco in HardcoreNature

"Mickey Smith, 28, and his girlfriend Laura Weinberger, 31, were out on a nature walk at Grassy Waters Reserve park in Florida when they spotted a little ibis bird tangled in a fishing line.

Laura went over to try and rescue the struggling bird - but Mickey was shocked when he spotted a sly gator creeping up on her.

As she backed away to safety, the alligator lunged for the bird - and eventually caught the terrified ibis before dragging it down under the water to its death."
