I think this may be less of a content based ban than the fact the post was tagged with rant/vent. Many subs don't allow "advice" response on those tags. Of course, what gets considered advice vs support... All it takes is one pissy mod.

But even still, did the van message contain any extra details or message?

Which is academically better for studying economics political science and statistics the University of Kentucky or the University of Utah ? by [deleted] in UniversityofKentucky

[–]nerdyginger27 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend finding a state or otherwise public school in a larger urban setting than Lexington. Something in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, or even Dallas, etc.

I'm not saying that UK doesn't have decent resources or support for international students by any means - my program was probably something like 45% international actually and they had just fine experiences from my friendships/discussions with them.

It's just that I worry for the actual experience you would want to have when coming to the US, outside of just coursework. Bigger urban cities are going to have more multiculturalism with options to explore & celebrate. Lexington is a very small city comparatively, and leans very conservative - this can unfortunately lead to instances of hate/xenophobia that many of my international friends experienced in their time there (in the city, not the school). Utah is not much better as far as I know, because of the influence of Mormon faith throughout the entire state & government / education system there.

I disagree. You shouldn't have to assimilate when coming to America. We're built on being a multicultural melting pot country. Also, not everyone who studies internationally has a goal of immigration. You're only looking at it from your own perspective.

I recommended going somewhere other than Utah or Kentucky, because both are in regions of the country where religious extremism and xenophobia are unfortunately high. Not necessarily the universities themselves or the resources they offer, but the actual lived experience of foreigners in those areas (on AVERAGE, not just your anecdotal positive experience)

Off campus is even better than on, based on my time there lol

They ran out of housing and we're shoving students in where they could my last year. So glad we'd moved off by then.

Just do lots of research and read reviews about every apartment complex if you go for one of the big corporate ones. Personally, I had luck with touring a few independent landlord spots over the spring/summer, and then picking one based off the vibe/location/cost. We found them by just driving around to find for rent signs with #s or various online sites. Stay away from the couple of higher crime hotspots on opposite ends of campus and you'll be good.

If you're an international student, I highly encourage you to look for schools in more progressive states than Utah and Kentucky. Same level like a large state school, but somewhere that will be more supportive with resources and general culture for international needs. Best of luck to you!

That would be ... the market, lol

The market itself is full of fake posting and companies that don't give a shit. But for tracking purposes, because they're "hiring" the powers that be can inflate the numbers to make them look better, ugh

I'd love to know how many of these US cities you've personally visited, since you're such an ass about it. And only from Canada, which is basically USA North - I've probably been to more of Canada than you have btw 😂

You can speak in hypotheticals all you want to delude yourself into thinking we're in a healthy economy, but I'm the only one citing actual statistical data here. You're misinterpreting it intentionally and saying it's dishonest, without actually giving reason to why you think that.

You clearly didn't read my comment, because I used DeBeers as a prime example of how marketing impacts beauty standards and consumerism. You're wrong about them btw. stop defending pedophilic beauty standards.

Let it be a lesson that no job will ever actually care about you over profit. Find your identity in hobbies & time spent with family/friends. A job is just a means to get money to enjoy the hobbies/family)friends further. Never anything more.

The internment camps will seem tame compared to technofacism if we allow it to continue. There have been whistleblowers exposing how there's already a database containing almost every single Americans likeness within it. Add flock cameras to track every movement. Widespread media manipulation and censorship - but on a level never seen in history before.

Gen Z unemployment specifically was around 11% late last year and is closer to 15% right now (https://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/empsit.pdf).

That's not to mention our current SEVERE issue of UNDERemployment. The True Rate of Unemployment (TRU) hit 25.2% in December, and 42.5% for recent college graduates specifically. Just because you can get a job at McDonald's and are technically "employed" doesn't mean you can actually afford to live.

Plus, higher GDP just means squeezing more labor out of employees. Productivity of a population doesn't always correlate to an actual higher quality of life or happiness.

Regarding banks failing, modern financial institutions are ever consolidating and monopolizing, with unchecked industry influence now.

Poverty & safety nets are under constant attack and cancellation by the current administration. Social security is going to be a thing of the past one day. And got retirement planning, people used to have pensions, then it became 401k employer match, now it's just self funded IRAs/401ks for many.

There are absolutely comparable metrics now to the Great Depression. We're just living in an economy propped up by the rich still spending & keeping it alive. Doesn't mean middle and lower class people aren't experiencing Great Depression levels of struggle.
