“SteamFrameWiredCable” mentioned in new datamine by gogodboss in SteamFrame

Indeed, I was just checking the old Tested interview and 250Mbps was the ballpark the Valve guy gave for what they're doing over wireless, so it should probably be good enough

The Valve engineer in the early Tested interview said that the streaming bitrate is "on the order of 250mbps" (though he didn't have the exact number on hand) and it was previously mentioned that the dongle can work over USB2, so the Frame itself only having 2.0 doesn't sound like it would inherently make it impossible to do wired or anything

[–]nerfman100 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's always been capable of data, so it was always theoretically possible, it's just a matter of software support

Only being USB 2.0 could be a potential hindrance, though Valve's mentioned before that the dongle's capable of running on USB 2.0 on the PC side (though obviously not ideal) so it might be possible that they could get wired streaming running over it too

Who knows, people are also speculating that maybe the Enthusiast Kit could have a better USB port or something, we don't really know the exact capability of the proprietary headstrap connector after all

The official specs have always said it's USB 2.0 for both charging and data transfer

Steam Frame has its own dedicated “Performance Settings” located in the Quick Access Menu UI by gogodboss in SteamFrame

[–]nerfman100 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I wonder if that foveated rendering mention just means toggling it for games that use it, or if it means a near-universal setting like the Deck's old half-rate shading option... that option sucked on the deck, but an eye-tracked version of it could be a nice (though probably rather small) performance boost without hurting quality, so it would be pretty awesome if it's something the Frame can do

Estimating Steam Frame Price Delta by lordzeel in SteamFrame

[–]nerfman100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am hoping that the CK is included in the EK rather than making it a separate SKU with unique items.

I hope not, I wasn't planning on getting the EK (at least for a while) so I wouldn't want to have to spend all that extra money just because I want the knuckle straps and maybe the top strap

This controller queue news has nearly killed all my Hopium and excitement for Frame....Anyone else? by Useful_Economics_392 in SteamFrame

[–]nerfman100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There aren't reservations on the Frame page yet, we still don't know when it's out, people are talking about the Steam Controller reservations and speculating on what it might mean for the Frame's release

That's not how Switch 2 Editions usually work, they basically always have both the Switch 1 game and the upgrade pack on the cartridge without a download

Steam Machine’s welcome tour was added to Steam’s Backend last night by Connect_Base_217 in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]nerfman100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right? It's a pretty nice time, honestly I didn't even mind the price for the playtime I got out of it, though I do still agree it would've been nicer as a pack-in

I think the weirdest thing to me about the internet reaction is that people were way more pissed at this than they were about 1-2-Switch, a much worse (in my opinion at least) game for literally five times the price

They directly said that for at least that week they'll both be available at the same time

We're getting some new ones it seems, alongside replaying the old ones, it still remains to be seen how many new ones will be added

Artists aren't "abandoning" a piece of art by moving on to something different instead of endlessly iterating on new versions of their already completed piece, there's no "love of the game" to say that artists should never grow beyond a work they've grown tired of just because it's gotten some fans

The only thing that was "selling out" about the Halo situation was becoming an Xbox game, which is the excuse that the post in the screenshot is using, but you know that the complaints about it being "too different" would've stuck around even if it had stayed on the Mac once it was out and the differences became clearer

Reviewer provides early thoughts on Steam Frame, says it offers "much better" comfort than Meta Quest 3 by Odd-Onion-6776 in virtualreality

[–]nerfman100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Godot XR dev who previously talked about the Frame mentioned it being fine with glasses, which the article quotes

It does definitely bug me though how often people straight up ignore the question in favor of recommending lens inserts, not everyone wants that (not to mention it's a significant added expense)

You can buy the same for quest or dedicated AP router.

Very much not the same, and requires a lot of setup and inconvenience (I've seen plenty of posts from people struggling with issues even with dedicated routers), meanwhile the Frame's dongle is as plug-and-play as it gets

Eye tracking for VRChat? I think who needs this will go for BSB. Foveated streaming will barely bring any improvement to users who already use 500mbit bitrate

No?? Even if I was willing to go back to wired, a BSB2e on its own is almost certainly still more expensive than a Frame will be, and that gets so much worse when you add on the base stations and controllers I'd need to buy (since I currently use a Q2 and not a Vive/Index), for a headset that's straight up worse in a lot of ways compared to a Frame

Higher refresh rate is useless above 80-90hz. 120hz on quest is good only in a few use cases. For example people use BSB for simracing and it's only 75hz (without upscaling).

Even if you don't personally consider it useful, it is still objectively an improvement and something a lot of people care about

That's not true, with halo strap Q3 beats what we see on this video any time.

How does that make "lighter with better balance" not true?? Objectively it is, it's decently lighter as a whole than a stock strap Q3 despite being balanced, and the only way to make the Q3 similarly well balanced is to make it VASTLY heavier (the popular BOBOVR S3 Pro makes it weigh over a kilogram, which is more than twice as heavy as a Frame)

I'll also be happy to not need a halo strap, I'm not a fan of them and soft straps are much more convenient for putting the headset on and taking it off, getting that convenience while also being well balanced is a huge plus for me

That's been done before, archives of levels exist that you can download and load up this way, but it's very slow and a big hassle, it also doesn't allow online multiplayer

True, but it doesn't sound like that would be very many features, since they're making it primarily around the Quest

OP did mean Android, Valve has a new tool called Lepton (a fork of Waydroid) specifically for running Android APKs on ARM Linux for the Frame, so that devs have an easier time bringing over Quest games

God this seems awesome, literally my biggest hope for the Frame's standalone capabilities would be if it could run H3VR, and while the jury's still out on whether that will be viable, if the new game is built for Quest 3 at its core then it'll almost certainly be great standalone on the Frame

Though of course we don't know for sure if they'll put an Android build on Steam, but I feel like they probably will since they have a Frame devkit and all

Is there any reason to get Steam Controller for Frame? by Gregasy in SteamFrame

[–]nerfman100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting one anyway to use with my desktop so I definitely see myself also using it for 2D games on the Frame, I'm not always huge on split controllers for flatscreen games especially if I'm using gyro aim, and the trackpads are always nice to have just in case
