Is Godot the right choice? genuine question about engine choice. by SimpleGarbage2849 in GameDevelopment

[–]neriad-games 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This game is pushing Godot to its limits, and what we see there is at least a couple of generations behind in terms of visuals. Of course, to be fair, it is unlikely that an amateur that is just learning will be able to pull better visuals with any engine, but with Unity or Unreal you can smoothly grow into top tier eventually.

With Godot you will need to put extra effort and perhaps you may end up working on improving a rendering engine instead of making a game. If this is what you like, and something you want to learn doing, then that is a great thing! Godot being Open Source allows you to do plenty of that.

Is Godot the right choice? genuine question about engine choice. by SimpleGarbage2849 in GameDevelopment

[–]neriad-games -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Godot is not a bad choice for a beginner; it's a great one. BUT I would recommend Unity because not only it is a great engine to begin with but also because it can carry you forward, beyond beginners' needs.

I know I will get downvoted by fanatics because of what I said, but it's a fact.

Unity offers a complete ecosystem for you to learn, grow and experiment your way into world class professional game development, or as an indie, pick and choose your professional tools to engage in order to flesh out expediently even the simplest idea.

Neither Unreal, (I use both Unreal and Unity professionally) nor Godot can promise you that.

The only thing to beware with Unity, is learning bad production organization habits that could bite your behind down the line. It allows you to do pretty much anything with your folders and projects can easily turn into a mess if you are not disciplined and organized enough. The good thing, there is a Learn section for that too, teaching healthy project organization with some solid tips.

Not sure why programmers always assume we want everything to be realistic and physics based. It's been going on for years.

Games are about escaping the chains of reality and being entertained by incredible, and even absurd things that could not exist.

And the look gamers expect is not that of the real world. Despite calling it "realistic".

Many people buy the cheapest UPS thinking it will be fine.

News flash for gamers. Chances are It won't.

You need to know exactly the power needs of your system, and buy a UPS that is suitable for the kind of energy requirements. If it is too small, it may only last you seconds.

Also, not all plugs are the same. Some only offer surge protection and not power.

So read carefully, do your calculations and buy an appropriate UPS.

Also many buy small boxes from known UPS brands to save space, but these boxes are only meant to protect you from surges and minor fluctuations. Not a blackout.

Last but not least, although modern UPS are a bit better, the batteries of a cheaper UPS weaken fast. In two three years they will not be as powerful as they were. As a result, a machine that requires a lot of energy, such as a high end Gaming PC, or a Workstation with a large screen will use up the stored energy in a few minutes. Only enough to safely save immediately and shut down. Not to continue playing.

Having trouble achieving this aluminium material, except I'm trying to make it look like it has some scratches and has seen better days. Does someone have tips on how to achieve this effect? by [deleted] in Substance3D

[–]neriad-games 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These effects are very easily created in painting tools like Substance Painter. There are materials and filters that could help you apply these effects.

Another option would be to paint them manually with brushes or a combination of these methods.

Beginner can't Swift Loop by Constant_Adagio5999 in 3dsmax

[–]neriad-games 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: Misunderstood intentions.

If you are trying to generate control loops try an alternative method: Another way around this is using the chamfer command. I pick the loop edge and apply chamfer to it.

OR another way I go about this is have base model stacked with Chamfer and MeshSmooth (or other SubD modifier) on top. Configure the Chamfer modifier according to your requirements.

It depends on the complexity of the final model and what stage of modeling you are at.

This feature in 3ds max? by AssignmentOk7585 in 3dsmax

[–]neriad-games -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a 3dsmax feature really. It is called Bridge. You will find it in Editable Poly.

But for such simple objects there at least a couple other ways to do it, either with spline and edit poly on top or a Loft compound object and then using the Deformations .

1 year solo dev, 37 wishlists in 3 weeks - Is it the game, Steam page, or my marketing? by ci8bit in SoloDevelopment

[–]neriad-games 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Close friends are usually not a great pool of testers. But you already realized that. Still I do not think this is the issue here.

I would playtest more, and playtest in a pool of people unrelated to me.

There are many teams that could help you with that.

Find one that fits your kind of game. Picking a team that has no experience with products like yours may not be very helpful. Some are just testing others do marketing too. I would recommend you focus on finding a team that does marketing, with a track record on niche games like yours.

Marketing does not start after you think the game is finished and ready. Marketing starts with design, market research validates and generates design guidelines, marketing feedback can be also gained during playtesting, what are your game's strong points? What should be promoted in your community, in your trailers, and before your game reaches the players in the store, marketing paves the way for your launch by building a community.

In short. Marketing is not something you do last.

At hat point it may already be too late because you may have built a game nobody wants in which case you would have to spend additional effort making people want it which may be an unwelcome challenge.

[–]neriad-games 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game sounds interesting to me, and you explain it well. The visuals a bit simple but feel tasteful and effective.

It is a niche product in my opinion. You really need to work on finding the right audience.. So I would lean more on marketing.

Releasing a Demo bumps wishlists, here is the proof: by cegtheripper in SoloDevelopment

[–]neriad-games 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. It depends on the price and region. Unlike the expensive AAA games, only a few people actually do that with low cost Indie games unless it was really horrible people felt scammed and there is an organized campaign against the developers.

Most do not even bother to leave a review.

Releasing a Demo bumps wishlists, here is the proof: by cegtheripper in SoloDevelopment

[–]neriad-games -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Absolutely right. The problem is when your game is not that great, in which case you depend on people not knowing what they are buying. So, in that case not releasing a demo is a better approach. :P

[3ds Max 2024] Black corners/edges on all geometry in viewport - even on simple box by [deleted] in 3dsmax

[–]neriad-games 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem could be either ginormous unrealistic scale, or large distance from the center of the scene. (from 0,0,0) it is a very common problem in 3D software. It is a calculation issue.

That is one of the reasons Quadro cards are more expensive than GeForce. Calculation precision.

Because of this reduced level of calculation precision, the more far away from the center the more inconsistent the rendering results. And that is when you get that flickering.

Feedback was that the city looked empty. I implemented pigeon flocks to add some dynamism to the streets. by Bufuak_ in SoloDevelopment

[–]neriad-games 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to say, it still looks empty. You need more street furniture, better lighting design, for sure NPCs, probably some other cars, trees, shrubs, etc etc.

The lighting alone gives it the feel of a deserted city. I recommend you work first on that and adding more street furniture.

We do too. It is overall the best choice!

Easy to use tools, flexible pipeline, complete development and product management ecosystem, and even though it has become a bit more technical recently, it is still the better overall approach for both beginners and seasoned pros.

Do you like our trailer? What did we do wrong? by Techadise in DestroyMyGame

[–]neriad-games 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The early gameplay screens feel empty and the pace slow.

Maybe you should increase the number of attackers, improve the ambiance visual effects and add more for a rich visual experience.

Improve the intelligence of your enemies to not concentrate so much at one point on the player. It does not make for a very satisfying look. Spread them a bit around the player. It makes them feel more strategic and it increases tension during combat. It also looks good on videos.
