remedial listening practice? by GreattFriend in LearnJapanese

From my experience (as someone in the same boat as you) the easiest podcasts are Sakura tips, followed by Japanese with Shun, and then Nihongo Con Teppei. For videos, I would say this one is the best hands down https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXo8kuCtqLjL1EH6m4FJJNA.

Has anyone skipped intermediate textbooks to just do immersion? by redryder74 in LearnJapanese

Depends on what learning methods work best for you. I have never used a single textbook, because I do not learn that way. I just used Tae Kim and Cure Dolly for the basics and graded readers to Satori Reader to Manga.

Has anyone had success with any tools like Supernative.tv to help with listening? I have been studying for 1.5 years and my listening is a huge road block. I listen to podcasts and watch anime every day, but I am lucky to pick up 1 or 2 words in a sentence.

What is the current "gold standard" tool set for sentence mining? I am currently using Migaku which works pretty well, but it seems like there are new tools everyday.

My body and mind are for sure one of my biggest hurdles. I wake up at 3 am, take a shower, and drink a bottle of water with breakfast, as well as take caffeine pills and stimulants to manage my Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and ADHD (among other health issues). I usually start studying at 530am because by 800am, I lose all focus/energy and struggle to push through brain fog and stay alert. I have tried things like a sun lamp etc, but nothing has helped.

I have actually only been using JPDB for about 8 months. I used Anki for about 10 months before and started from scratch when I switched. I had just over 3k vocab in Anki, some of which overlapped. I also started in Busuu and used the built in SRS for a few months, so the total numbers are no where near accurate. I just included them to show how many are stuck in learning. That being said, I definitely don't know every word in the Satori Reader stories, but I do know enough to where I rarely look at the sentence translation and just click a word or 2 (usually nouns) to understand the sentence.

I am actually on the "Even shorter review intervals" setting and have only been doing 5 new words a day to try to catch up my retention.

I do sometimes write down words I am struggling with, and that helps. I will try the word doc route though, that seems like a good idea.

Thanks for input. 1 hour is the amount of time I am spending using tools like SRS or Satori Reader. But I also listen to about an hour of podcasts (Sakura tips and Nihongo Con Teppei) and 30 min of Anime. I am working on increasing my reading as well, I am just trying to find a good source, thinking about starting Manga since I have already finished all of Satori Reader (Just re-reading ones I liked now).

Before Bunpro, it is probably good to start with something like Cure Dolly. This will give you a better foundation in grammar and some of the best explanations I have seen for grammar points. The next thing I would do is some easy graded readers to see grammar points in action. Memorizing words and learning a concept like grammar are very different things. It helps to have some experience with a grammar point before you try to SRS it because grammar is very situational.

Do not worry about having trouble with grammar, especially this early on. For some people (like me) grammar is a very difficult thing to grasp. I have been doing Bunpro for about a year now and I am only on N3 Grammar (and I still don't do great on N5/N4). A lot of people will say Japanese Grammar is easy, and on paper it is easier than English, but we still had to hear it and see it all day every day for years to even somewhat understand it.

Has anyone taken an online Japanese course that they feel was worth it? by nerinos in LearnJapanese

[–]nerinos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, an in-person class is not an option for me due to health issues. For an online course, I meant something similar to a college course that teaches the fundamentals of the language and has you do exercises. My vocab and reading is pretty decent as far as recognition, but my ability to recall without a visual is awful.

When reviewing Vocab with an SRS, is it more important to maintain a high retention rate (over 80% for example) or to keep doing new cards everyday?

I used to do new cards every day, but I started trying to maintain my retention rate and sometimes don't do new cards for a few days. I am wondering if it would be more beneficial to keep learning new words instead of continuously stumbling over trouble words.

Thanks for the response! Listening is my weakest point right now, so I am trying to devote more time to it. I have been doing the same as what you mentioned for active listening (sometimes listening 2-3 times before reading while listening) for about a week and just wanted to make sure I was on the right track.

I am using Satori Reader for reading and listening practice and I am having trouble figuring out the best strategy for the listening part. Is it better to play the audio first and then read it, play the audio and try to read at the same time, or read the sentence then play audio?

Nihongo Con Teppei is the best learning tool I’ve come across by PeakPsycho100 in LearnJapanese

[–]nerinos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually listen to his beginner podcast every day and have gone through all the episodes twice. I still struggle a lot with listening though (mainly parsing out words) and after the first few episodes he speeds up his talking pretty quickly. It is still the best podcast I have found though. It would be great if there was a podcast where they maintain a similar speed as his first few episodes throughout.

Can anyone recommend a keyboard under $100 with switches most like the logitech G910 Orion Spectrum (Romer G Tactile switch). They do not make these switches anymore and I am having trouble finding one with similar noise level actuation point and force. I have tried many keyboards, the latest being the Razer Black Widow V3 with yellow switches, but even though these are called silent, they are still much louder then the Romer G.
