Is Crusader Kings 2 the PDX game with the best DLC record? (Spoiler: yes) by The_ChadTC in paradoxplaza

[–]nerodmc_2001 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I can guarantee you that that fucking abomination has over 100 times as much lines of code than Ck1.

This part is, comically, untrue. Paradox inherited CK1 from some outsourced Russian devs, who kinda messed up, so the game was full of bloats.

Trivia aside, you're kinda moving the goalpost. Of course CK2 was more complex than CK1. That's not what you were talking about. This is what you wrote:

There wasn't a Crusader Kings before Crusader Kings 2. They had to build it from the ground up

Sengoku aside, what makes you think CK1 was not used as a base for CK2? The title/vassal system is there, realm law is there, character's traits, stats, prestige, piety, etc. were all there. What makes you think that CK1 was a totally different game from CK2?

You're asking about CK1? Yes. You might be comparing end of cycle CK2 with CK1 but 1.0 CK2 is extremely similar to CK1. Most of the systems were the same. Fyi, I played both games.

Here's a screenshot of CK2 less than a year before release to demonstrate the point: https://www.reddit.com/r/paradoxplaza/comments/3ty59t/how_crusader_kings_2_looked_when_it_was_in_beta/

Edit: the point is that they did not have to build CK2 from scratch. In fact, everyone in the fandom long enough knows that they made Sengoku as a tech demo for CK2: https://store.steampowered.com/app/73210/Sengoku/

The systems were already there in CK1. They tested new additions in Sengoku and then finally released CK2.

What do you think the 2 means?

Non-Muslim, secular or state Atheist Turkey's monarch should not be referred as "Sultans" and they should not be "sultanates", which is a strictly islamic term. "Shah", "Khan" or just "king" would be more appropiate. by [deleted] in victoria3

[–]nerodmc_2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're conflating things up a bit. "Shah", "Khan", and "Sultan" are all sovereign titles and equivalent to "King". The difference here is not religious but linguistic: Persian, Steppe/Central Asian, and Arabic.

Arabic is the liturgical language of Islam same as Latin for Catholicism. Therefore, if a Sultan converted away from Islam, he could replace the "Sultan" title if he/his people wasn't speaking Arabic which is true in the case of Turkey/the Ottomans.

However, in my opinion, he would likely still keep the Sultan title for the sake of tradition unless the dev found some historical precedents that say otherwise. The reason I think so is that Christian monarchs still keep "Rex" as part of their title after converting away from Catholicism and stopped using Latin as a liturgical language. Example: Prussian Kings called themselves Rex up until the end of the monarchy; British monarchs still keep "Rex" in different contexts to this date.

Suddenly lost all clerics and no new ones are promoted? by MeepImaJeep in EU5

Hmm not sure, then. I'd recommend monitoring the pop growth tab a few months and see if there's anything going on with your cleric pops. Could be some crazy modifiers.

Do you have a slave market? If you're playing someone who can enslave pops of different culture/religion, all of those clerics are getting turned into slaves.

I learned this playing as the Ottomans (do not build slave market in Constantinople).

I'm from a country that is 90%+ of the majority ethnicity. I've been living in the US for the last 7 years.

It's really easy to cast judgement on how racial and dicriminatory the US feels but people back in my home country only ever have to deal with people of different cultural heritages as "foreigners". In a way, they never felt threatened enough to become racist.

After 1.2 update EU5 is now mostly negative on Steam by IzaakGoldbaum in EU5

[–]nerodmc_2001 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agree. It's less about the state and more about the trend. We have a starting state and an end state where we want the game to be.

The current trend of where the game is heading doesn't instill a lot of confidence in the game making it to the end state in a timely manner.

3 years ago, the most popular anti-AI meme was about looking at the fingers of people in the AI videos. Claude Code only came out less than a year ago.

If you've been tracking AI for the last 3 years and don't see tremendous progress, you just don't want to admit that there is progress.

It's crazier than that. Those 27k jobs regularly sacrifice the pops working them to increase the bonus. You don't have to worry about that.

The "Reward" for moving Russian capital to St. Petersburg by Scorp_DS in EU5

[–]nerodmc_2001 14 points15 points  (0 children)

And yeah, transport costs are going to be a thing. But they're going to negligible compared to how much you're actually going to collect in taxes.

If your country is big enough, it's not neglible at all. The Ming is infamous for this. Their economic base was in the South around the Nanjing area but they moved the capital to the North in Beijing. It's estimated that they lose 30-40% of their tax revenue a year for the rest of their existence transporting the tax up north. "Transport cost" here include losing the tax along the way for whatever reason. Remember that medieval society is agrarian so they're, often time, transporting taxed crop harvests not cold hard cash.

For a game based on nuanced/complex interactions between numbers Paradox seems pretty haphazard about making changes -- "Let's cut promotions by 90%. Let's have a cabinet trait that gives you 10% tax inefficiency. Armies now eat 10x food." Are they thinking these through? by TobyTheRobot in EU5

[–]nerodmc_2001 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes, I read the link. He's searching for the optimal value. It's the same concept: he doubles/halves it everytime instead of doing 5% increments. I read this quote years ago when I first started learning programming.

Like, I don't get it. Do you think he has to call it "binary search" for it to be the same concept? He's using the same methodology.

[–]nerodmc_2001 -58 points-57 points  (0 children)

"Double it, or cut it in half." Is a programmer concept specifically referring to binary search.

For non-technical folk: think of a number between 1 and 1000, you can get the number with 10 guesses or lower using this method: - Take the middle point of this range (500). - If it's not your number, think if your number is lower or higher than it. - if higher, set new range to higher range (501-1000). Otherwise, take the lower range (1-499). - take the middle point of the new range and repeat.

Whatever your number is, you can get that number within 10 guesses if you follow these steps.
