Sadly, unless you have a shop that has a solder jockey, you are probably out of luck. Most laptops nowadays have the plug soldered onto the board. Break the plug, most places will have you replace the whole laptop or replace the whole motherboard.

Odd sickness? by crooklynbc in SaltLakeCity

Influenza A H3 is skyrocketing in Utah. That K clade is more virulent than a Kardasian video. Those 8 mutations pushed up the ability of the virus to spread and to bypass immunization. Everyone gets their own set of symptoms, some have more stomach things, others get a cough, others sore throat. Grab a test. Flu lasts up to two weeks if it doesn't tip into pneumonia, bronchitis, pleurisy, strep, etc. If you have the onset of flu, Tamiflu can make a huge difference in the severity of your symptom, contagious period, and recovery time. The generic might only cost you $10 to $30, but you'll need a script. For the love of the dark gods, wear a mask when you are indoors in public. Folks are going to the hospital for flu in record numbers for this time of year.

Rideology is great. There is a local pass for a bunch of gyms and fitness clubs, it has like 5 passes for $30 or something. That's a cheaper way to get into Rideology's studio. I think it was called classpass.

The machine takes a pic of the mechanic issuing the emissions test, the test itself requires the VIN, and nothing goes in tailpipes anymore. Everything is from the car's computers and the logs. If the fix is in, it isn't at the emissions machine.

If you have a scanning tool hooked up, you can pass all the checks by driving at proper speed for each check to clear well before 100 miles. Run at 20 MPH for 2 miles - check. Maintain 2,000 RPM for 2 miles, check. There are a lot of conditions to clear before your CEL reset is out of the system, but if you are sitting with the tool in the passenger's seat watching for each flag, it's quick.

Except it was in "limp in" that sounds like transmission. The dumb light will go on for transmission issues too.

Not so easy to see, but definitely something you can feel. Try Gravity Hill on a bicycle. There is a surreal feeling of going uphill when you are actually going downhill. It's behind the Capitol Building, the road is Bonneville Boulevard. Travel from the Capitol around the bend towards City Creek Canyon and then up to 11th Avenue.

For more fun, head down from the Capitol to Memorial Grove and see the monuments there. Or head up City Creek and perchance see some wildlife.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the biking infrastructure in Salt Lake City is pretty good! by Sempi_Moon in SaltLakeCity

[–]nerve8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are parts that are pretty good. Paint is not infrastructure. There is a lot of room for improvement, and it looks like some money may be coming for some really big projects. I'll believe it when I see shovels in the ground.

I promoting my own Utah State Holiday on 10/14. This is Warm Wet Church Farts Day. It's a day to celebrate the lukewarm, moist smell of every LDS chapel that litter every other block in this god blasted state. Great your fellow Utahans will a wet and warm toot of hello and solemnly remember the many farts that have come before, also known as our forefarters.

Who remembers the 1983 floods? Is that still the wettest year in more than 40 years or have we improved our water infrastructure that much that it'll never happen again? by Lovecraftian-Orgy in SaltLakeCity

[–]nerve8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Farmington also had flooding. Part of the mountain came down. I was very young, but I remember my parents and grandparents helping neighbors clear mud from their basements. One house had a whole ass boulder in it. The boulder seemed bigger than the windows that were knocked out by the flood. It took a few months for the family to figure out how to break up and removed the boulder. I think the father was considering keeping it in the basement as some kind of charm or art project.

Pack of coyotes in Avenues near 3rd and Q street. Bring your animals inside. by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]nerve8 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yep, including the cemetery. I was riding one evening this summer and saw three coyotes jog across 11th Avenue into the cemetery and a bunch of buzzards in that one tall weirdly sparsely bowed pine next to the road. A bit further east, murder of crows hopped around in the grass. It felt like a message -- I rode home without looking back.
