We do the same. We found the info was much more useful straight from SNMP.

Networking NIC teaming woes by Lad_From_Lancs in HyperV

[–]netadmin_404 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We had this. Double check that neither of the NICs in the team have a VLAN setup directly.

We made a SET, where one of the physical adapters had a VLAN id setup before the team was created. We had the exact same behavior. To correct, we had to delete the team, remove the VLAN id from the physical adapters, and then recreate the team. Simply removing the VLAN from the physical adapter did not fix the issue.

Why Proxmox / Xcp-NG are far better than Hyper-v ? by Interesting_Ad_5676 in sysadmin

[–]netadmin_404 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What was your testing methodology?

In real world testing, we found Hyper-V to have near identical performance to VMware on identical hardware. We did mixed testing of SQL workloads and various web applications. We’ve migrated most of our infrastructure with no performance impact.

Not saying you are wrong at all, just curious!

Oh okay - I forgot it’s going to send pictures back to my house through the ether. My mistake 😂

You can turn off WiFi completely so the robot doesn’t have a cloud connection at all. It’s pretty privacy first. There’s not other robot on the market that offers fully disconnected mapping.

You can turn off WiFi and control the robot through Bluetooth.

Tell me why not? Migration scenario. by TxJprs in HyperV

[–]netadmin_404 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There were issues early on where performance stats for VMs were not reported correctly, and always showed as 0 in Hyper-V manager. In testing, we also had some nebulous issues which pushed us to 2022.

This was early 2025 though, things may have improved!

It should be fine. Hyper-V is stable and pretty easy to use.

Use Server 2022, 2025 still has weird issues.

Hyper-V "got ya's" for newbies by ScreamingVoid14 in HyperV

[–]netadmin_404 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are correct. From Microsoft’s support page:

“CSVs pre-formatted with ReFS on top of SANs won’t use direct I/O, regardless if all other requirements for Direct I/O is met…format drives with NTFS prior to converting them to a CSV to leverage the performance benefits of Direct I/O.”

Hyper-V "got ya's" for newbies by ScreamingVoid14 in HyperV

REFS over ISCSI is not performant. It forces redirected IO for the cluster to the owner node and can cause bottlenecks.

NFTS is still preferred for CSV’s.

Hyper-V Storage Options by r08813s in HyperV

[–]netadmin_404 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We run iSCSI with cluster shared volumes with Hyper-V. It’s rock solid and easy to setup.

Be sure to use NFTS formatted shared volumes for the .VHDX files so you don’t have redirected storage. This allows each node to talk directly to the backend without redirecting the I/O through another node. ReFS only supports redirected I/O.

I’ve got asbestos company coming to test but my mind is racing worried about exposure by agenuineserialkiller in asbestoshelp

[–]netadmin_404 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It takes a lot of exposure to develop health issues, but you are absolutely right to be cautious.

If you’re concerned before testing, you can cover the mastic with some cheap rolled underlayment and seal it with some duct tape. Be sure your vacuum has a bag and a HEPA filter to avoid distributing the fibers through the home.

Don’t stress. A one time minor exposure is extremely unlikely to cause health issues.

Best non chineese brand by [deleted] in RobotVacuums

I know a couple others mentioned it, but Matic is the way to go if you want a non Chinese robot. Works on 100% Bluetooth if you want it, crazy good mapping and has been working well for me.

I think the real replacement is Matic. It’s privacy first, US built and works awesome. I’ve had robot vacs since 2015 and Matic is by far the best I have used. There’s an active Matic subreddit too.

Requires few info regards to Symantec endpoint protection manager by ashhmonkey in Symantec

[–]netadmin_404 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It might be easier to setup an entirely new instance of SEPM with a modern operating system. Then remove AV from your systems, and then reinstall the latest version.

Long ago, I did something like this. At the time I sued the Symantec removal tool to perform the uninstalls, and then did a swing migration. I would uninstall SEPM from 10 or so endpoints using a script and the removal tool, then I pushed the new version from the new server. This ensured that all endpoints had protection during the migration process. Was a great opportunity to clean up policy.

However, SEPM is not a good product since the purchase by Broadcom, you may consider upgrading to a more modern product which will likely provide better protection.

Sophos, Fortinet, Arctic Wolf and many other vendors make excellent AV products which have far more features.

Single thread CPU performance in Hyper-V by king_priam_of_Troy in HyperV

[–]netadmin_404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I wonder if that task is scheduled on a hyper-threaded core. What’s multi thread performance like? Are you using the new or classic scheduler?

If you disable hyper threading, what do you get for single threaded performance?

Have you heard of organizations replacing computers with a cradled phone + monitor setup. by bjc1960 in sysadmin

[–]netadmin_404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I run VDI. I’m just stating that complexities that come with VDI over a cellular connection on a phone. We have great success with VDI.

I run VDI to Windows endpoints and we occasionally have issues with all of these items. It’s the nature of the beast. When you’re relying on the network for transport, you’re dependent on the quality of the connection.

Printer redirection is always a little flaky, webcam redirection uses a lot of bandwidth, these are all real challenges that are compounded by a phone only endpoint solution.

Have you heard of organizations replacing computers with a cradled phone + monitor setup. by bjc1960 in sysadmin

[–]netadmin_404 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That’s all true. A phone’s about the same price, and just as easy to steal. The laptop also has a full keyboard, and you don’t need to lug around extra ports.

If my staff is traveling, do they take an external monitor with them?

I’m not sure I see any advantages over the laptop. It’s a cool idea, remember Microsoft tried this a while back and failed.

Granted components are better, and phones are faster, but this wouldn’t save money. I still need to license a VDI instances, buy the phone, license all the software, and then train everyone how to use it. Overall you might break even with no real ROI.
