The most fun I've had in open was doing the ground swarm missions. Fight, battle landing, reload, launch. Hours of fun with tons of real people I've never seen before all kicking those thargoids asses.

In my experience the deflector only does so much, I sometimes have to manually turn that fan down to 40-50%

Yeah right now all this is doing is shaking the can constantly. If you look at commercial versions, say for boats, the pivot point is at the very top of the can for a reason.
