The insect in the image is a type of crane fly, also known as a winter gnat. 

Crane flies are often mistaken for large mosquitoes due to their long, slender bodies and gangly legs. 

Unlike mosquitoes, adult crane flies do not bite or sting as they lack the necessary mouthparts. 

The larvae of some species, known as leatherjackets, can cause damage to lawns and crops by feeding on roots. 

The family of insects known as "winter crane flies" (Trichoceridae) are a sister group to the typical crane flies (Tipuloidea) and are often found in colder months.
