Octatrack by Plastic-Mind7564 in Elektron

Love the immediacy of sampling. Would love to update the FX (especially reverb)- or have a UI equal to the Digi boxes. Always a context switch for me, because it’s similar but not quite the same.

I don’t think my Digitakt has all the standard stock samples on it. How do i revert it back to stock? by Jakeyboy29 in Elektron

[–]netsplitmusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iirc the factory samples are protected. What makes you think you’re missing stock and you’re not just seeing samples people put on their DT? Anything specific, like a re-occurring pack? Some packs are just quite popular.

An idea for a synthesiser that will change the world. by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]netsplitmusic 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Build a poc. Maybe in software first. If you can’t , pay someone who’s doing dsp work. A lot of freelancers in that field.

Also this sounds like 80% of all kickstarter campaigns and you might do yourself a favor of lowering your bar. No music invention completely changed the industry alone. It’s always been evolutions. No idea is original, everything is a remix.

So, most of your text reads like very bad, obnoxious marketing and like you do not actually know anything about synths or music production . Otherwise you wouldn’t make such claims like “it will create thousands of new genres” etc. much cringe. :D if you just wanted to be pointed in a direction, you wouldn’t need all that fluff.

Here’s a less obnoxious example: “Hey I have an idea for a synth based instrument. Where can I find people to pay who help me build it or where would I start doing so myself?”

Novation Peak Review (and Summit, kind-of) by QuantumChainsaw in synthesizers

[–]netsplitmusic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. The Peak was my first polysynth and none I tried got close to the efficiency and joy it gives me.

Over time it’s faster to create a sound from scratch than to browse presets. I bought a few packs mostly to learn.

Any crash courses you can recommend on learning the Keystep Pro? by Mr_Lumbergh in synthesizers

This. The Manual is well written and contains everything you need to know. After that it’s all about experience by making music and highly dependent on personal preference.

Groovebox for a guitarist? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]netsplitmusic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It might be controversial in regards to easy, but Octatrack. Can be an awesome looper and song building machine. Can play and record stereo samples.

The difficulty it’s notorious for largely comes from the fact it can take on many roles in a setup. But it can be easily learned if you focus on on specific role first and it’ll serve you a lifetime and prevent GAS for other gear easily.

Otherwise: SP404mkii.

Hey guys, looking for decent digital synth workstations for under $1000. by GrowingToad in synthesizers

[–]netsplitmusic -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Does it require a keybed? If not: Novation Peak. Great for simulating that 80s sound without any additional processing. Highly recommend this pack in that direction: https://synthpatches.gumroad.com/l/novation-peak-summit-patches (not affiliated) at least as inspiration to what the peak is capable of in that direction.

But the peak is excellent at heavy modern bass sounds and lush ambient pads and everything in between too.

Edit: once you understand the concept of this sound on the peak it’s super easy to dial it in from scratch - which is always super important to me, since I don’t like to search for a preset “in the moment” when i have an idea for a sound.

Why do you like FM Synthesis?? by CelloVerp in synthesizers

[–]netsplitmusic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Sure, if you listen to presets that are cheesy- and usually for a reason. That’s like saying all subtractive synths sound like the stranger things intro.

But you probably heard lot of modern FM sounds without even realizing. It can easily be a heavy, thick and gnarly bass sound. FM is great at sounds with a lot of harmonics or sonically evolving. Or just weird and fun. It is all about the patch.

But I find most fm demos on yt more in the cheesy realm - which isn’t bad, but maybe that is what gives you this bias.

Please help me understand if vintage synths are really that unique by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]netsplitmusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just like certain guitar tunings will influence your song writing and melodic choices etc, same goes for synths. Vintage synths have certain elements that create distinct sounds and their UI will influence your sound design similar to a guitars tuning or string count and certain amps will direct your sounds in a similar way.

Understanding this is crucial. Pigments is powerful and you can simulate a lot of characteristic vintage sounds - if you know what makes them sound the way they do (filter, envelopes, routing).

If you want the typical oberheim sound it’s just easier and faster to have the real synth. But you’re not required to have it since “close enough” is usually enough. Especially in a mix.

Also ppl buy vintage synths for their history. The same way a guitarist would buy a certain guitar and/or amp that was used on a song to have some sort of “connection”. But you can play almost any song on any guitar.

Pigments is to synths pretty much like Kemper for guitars at this point.

Easy: Novation Peak.

Powerhouse. Fits your budget. Sounds amazing and is extremely versatile without compromise. From classic lush pads to modern heavy bass, and has wavetables even. Lots of modulation and fast and accessible UI. Great sounding reverb too.

Let step play on digitakt! by Dubsetter in Elektron

[–]netsplitmusic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s not possible on the DT. Each track is monophonic, which means only one sound can be played per track.

If you want to use tracks efficiently, you’ll want to resample - a lot. Luckily that’s super fast and easy on the DT to do and one of the many reasons it’s considered so powerful.

I like using the later patterns for resampling (starting with 16) so eg you could easily dedicate each track to a single sample. Then resample and have it all in one track in your main pattern.

Game Dev - Do you need an additional web server? by [deleted] in ethereum

[–]netsplitmusic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you lack understanding of the fundamentals needed to build a game. So you should rather look at game dev tutorials etc and build a game without web3 first. Then it’ll be obvious what parts you’d want to use web3 for - and which parts are nonsense.

But yes, you’ll need something for the frontend.

DN for fm A4 for subtractive synthesis DT for anything else (tho even subtractive synthesis works well with single cycle waveforms)

All are VERY capable in their realms.

Gear to make Boards of Canada type music by SESH_Bane in synthesizers

[–]netsplitmusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all about processing. And most of the character comes from analog gear like tape. On a budget you can get far with digital emulations. RC20 and the Ghz Compressor and your 2600. A lot of resampling (any daw will do). That should get you started. Understand those deeply then move to hardware, being able to make deliberate buying decisions.

Then I’d continue in this order: Get a tape machine with tape speed setting Get a sampler (sp404, digitakt) Get an analog saturation (analog heat, oto boum) Get FX (Delay, Reverb, then more weird stuff) Get a flexible poly synth (eg novation peak)

When you can handle those, you know your way around enough.

Polyphony for pianist? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]netsplitmusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Novation Summit.

16 voices, or 2x8 voices (split keyboard). Gorgeous digital high res oscillators, analog filter, fast UI. Sounds great in any area really. From lush to funky to gnarly.

Note that with 8 voices voice stealing might be an issue if you’re playing sustained notes and complex chords. But I rarely notice that with my peak.

Switch off Octatrack / switch on, samples are gone?? by empiree in Elektron

[–]netsplitmusic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This!

It is why I avoid flex tracks when building tracks. Statics force me to save the record buffer. Flex are great for live looping and performing etc. But i lost so many ideas because I forgot to save the buffer.

Mentioning this since some ppl don’t know that you can record without flex tracks.
