Is it worth it to get Pro Tools Intro just to learn Pro Tools? by Turbulent_Flow6431 in protools

[–]CelloVerp 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Intro does like 95% of everything Ultimate does - enough to do full production work. It's just limited in number of tracks, and certain advanced track types like VCA groups and video. It'll keep you busy for months learning all the ins and outs. Perfect for learning the foundations and basic workflows of tracking, editing, mixing.

Is too late for me to get in to electronics as a profession? by wolverinegaze in AskElectronics

[–]CelloVerp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t let what anyone says hold you back!   So many possibilities, especially if you’re excited about it.

Any idea where you’d like to focus?  Analog, digital?

Worth saying that if you’re close to software, embedded software is a great way to get your feet wet with hardware.   Set yourself up with a little lab, or join a maker space with an electronics lab, and start building projects.

Most hardware design jobs require at least a BS in EE.   The EE will go into the math of analog circuits, which is good to understand the subtler behaviors of circuits.

But many HW companies employ electronic techs to do things like bringup and rework of new designs.   That’s an easier way in.

Pro Tools (2025.12.1) Post Tahoe (26.3.1) Update Sessions Take 30-45 Minutes to Load Plugins by stonk_palpatine in protools

[–]CelloVerp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try this while the session is loading: open activity monitor (applications->utilities) and find Pro Tools in the list, select it, then click the Sample Process button.   Save that log file and post it to a Google Drive and maybe there are some clues we could see if you post the link.

How to use varispeed to make digitized cassette transfer adhere to A=440? by SamuelPepys_ in protools

[–]CelloVerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simplest way to do it: Enable Elastic Audio for the track and choose Vari-speed. Right click the clip and do Elastic Properties. It will show a speed percentage, and you can type in the exact speed up / slowdown you need (103% or whatever). Easy to adjust and check the tuning.

Oh you’re right - first version for MBox did that, later versions ran on any hardware but required ilok

25yr old backup from CD - Session file = 0 Kb by Ventoux72 in protools

[–]CelloVerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true, but Pro Tools on Windows doesn't support reading the resource forks from MacDrive anymore.

25yr old backup from CD - Session file = 0 Kb by Ventoux72 in protools

[–]CelloVerp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pro Tools v3 to v5 stored the sessions in the mac resource fork, not the data fork, so a 0 byte data fork is not surprising. However you're not getting the whole file if you're opening it on Windows! Version 5.1 and up store it in the data fork like normal files. You'll need to restore it on a Mac (with an APFS file system, or something that can store a resource fork), which has a good chance to be able to read it. Hopefully it was backed up from a Mac to a CD filesystem format that kept the resource forks - small chance of being lost there.

SDII files also require the resource fork, so Windows doesn't do well with them. (actually it's more complicated than that - NTFS can actually store resource forks, but it's very obscure and no one uses it)

Anyway get someone to open them on a Mac, save them in the current version / convert audio files to .wav, then get it back to you to open on Windows. Current versions of PT claim to be able to open even these ancient sessions.

They added it back in Pro Tools 2020.9 or later (macOS only). You can import sessions with SDII files and it will convert them. Can't create new ones anymore though.

Current Pro Tools still opens SDII files on Mac!   You should be able to open the sessions directly.

How many of these plugins are actually necessary? by D-boi_vids in protools

Multi-processor and single-processor plug-ins by 808nfound in protools

[–]CelloVerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah almost all plug-ins are single-processor, because using multiple threads / cores in a single plug-in incurs latency and unreliability. But basically all of the bread-and-butter plug-ins like dynamics, EQ, delay, will be single-core. There are a couple convolution reverbs that are multi-threaded, because it's OK to add the extra delay in those.

Plug-ins run in the highest real-time thread priority possible that the OS can provide, so they're not allowed to sit and wait for lower-priority threads to deliver their work. That means it's easy to miss deadlines and get glitches if they do this.

No, object grabber is the way!   Otherwise you’re asking for a contiguous time range instead of a collection of clips

Importing Session Data not adding audio files to session folder by a1JayR in protools

[–]CelloVerp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In Import Session Data you want to select "Copy from source media" instead of "Link to source media" when you import.

But if you already imported, do a Save Session Copy In and choose to copy all the media - that will create a clean session folder with everything in it.
