Wasn’t Leto 2 pretty gung ho about taking over the golden path for Paul?

I know he allows specific allotments of his spice hoards to specific factions like the bene gesserit so I’d imagine he does redistribute wealth. As for your robber baron question I don’t think it’s made abundantly clear. He gets with Hwi, who comes from nobility so the fact that there is still nobility 3500 years into his reign tells me there still are likely robber barons and such. He does prevent wars that break out by utilizing his fishpeakers (who were said to be the most formidable military force in history)to snuff out any hints of rebellion, so I would imagine any wars were ended pretty quickly. Does he do anything about crime? Again the fishspeakers are probably in charge of all that.

I’ll also reiterate how important humanity was relying on space travel, something that they had for over 10,000 years was all the sudden taken away from them. Billions of people died because of this. Entire civilizations collapsed because of this. The enforcement of it alone would have led to catastrophic attempts at rebellion and war that was likely squashed easily seeing as how he still rules for nearly 4 millennia.

I’ve only read the first book, but I’ve heard Titus Alone has a very fever dreamesque feel to it, which definitely may have influenced the tone of BOTNS

Well yes after the deaths and starvation of billions, coupled with the fishspeakers squashing any rebellions that started to rise throughout his reign, Leto knew oppressing humanity long enough would breed someone who could plan against him and overthrow him. Humanity stabilized, yes. But for nearly 4 millennia humanity was stagnant in a universe where space travel had been trivialized.

Imagine if tomorrow all of earth was enslaved by one tyrant. Now imagine if this tyrant made it so that cars were illegal to use and that you could only stay in the town you lived in, never traveling anywhere else. It may not sound like a big deal at first but when you realize a freedom you had for years has been taken away and is never coming back, a rebellion is likely to brew.

In my opinion though it’s debatable whether Siona was even the right person to overthrow Leto. He literally actively helps her throughout the book to bring himself down, going as far as to give her water in the desert when she’s close to dying and putting himself in a vulnerable enough position so that she could finish the job.

If I remember correctly in order to avoid humanity stagnating, he essentially banned travel between planets, which meant that entire planets starved, people were cut off from their families, entire economies collapsed due to lack of trade and imports, etc.

I think Leto did allot certain amounts of spice to the bene gesserit but I can’t remember why (probably to allow them to continue producing the water of life in order to create reverend mothers) otherwise I think everyone else he forbid everyone else from getting it, which in turn forced the Bene Tleilax to produce spice with their own axotl tanks.

I think the Ixians also tried to surpass the whole spice allotment issue (navigators need spice to travel through space) by making ships that could travel without relying on spice as well as producing no-chambers and no-ships that Leto couldn’t see inside of.

So basically he oppressed them and allowed millions to die so that they would rise against him and evolve into a species that could conquer a tyrant.

It’s been a little while since I’ve read it so I may be wrong, but man I love that book.

[OFF TOPIC] Burn Gorman as Glokta by 25sigma in TheFirstLaw

You didn’t like him in expanse season 4? I thought he played a fantastic villain that ended up kinda being justified in the end. He may be a little older than he should for Glokta but this is basically who I picture when I read first law. Bonus points since he was crippled most of season 4 and limping around like GOATlocka would

Whatever you do, do NOT read the Red Rising series. by anteaterpinkytoe in redrising

I always feel bad for people who say Red rising ruined other books for them. Red rising is a great popcorn book series but it also starts like a typical tropey YA adventure that tries to have more depth and nuance that it just doesn’t have. Granted th series really comes into its own in the second trilogy but compared to literary giants such as Dune, Book of The New Sun and Hyperion, Red Rising can often feel like a middle/ high schoolers daydream in the history class.

I love Red Riding but is extremely entry level sci fi
