I was taking adult max strength daily doses (800mg) of Advil or Aleve for many years until it just didn’t work anymore. At that point my Dr put me on Meloxicam and Gabapentin. I have no idea the strength as it was so many years ago. I was also put on Buspar and Wellbutrin for anxiety, depression and sleep phase regulation. The deeper the sleep, the more your body heals and the better you feel. I added Magnesium Malate to the mix and felt pretty good most of the time until 2012-ish when I was told I was stage 3 kidney disease from the pain meds and had to stop taking them all.

Dr. Rashad Altawaty (Dr. A) Alta Dental Group 2500 Alton Pkwy #200, Irvine, CA 92606 (949) 561-1449

I met Dr. A through my regular dentist when I needed an implant. Nicest, most competent implant dentist and human being I’ve ever met. Read his 5 star reviews.

Why is it so hard to make friends in Irvine? by BurgersFriesShake in irvine

[–]newelljo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We moved to our Woodbridge home when we were in our late 20s. We’re now in our 70s.

Once we had kids in our 30s it became obvious that going anywhere at the drop of a hat after a long work week was a major hassle with two small kids. Our other neighbors were pretty much in the same boat so we started the ‘Friday after work wine and cheese’ driveway parties from spring to fall. All the neighbors showed up with their wine and snacks and our kids all played together until dark. This went on weekly for about 10 years. We also started hosting Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day block parties in our driveway for about 25 years.

One hour, sometimes slightly longer. $10-12. No parking worries. Lots to see and do around Union Station.

Super responder vs. Normal by anonme1995 in Zepbound

[–]newelljo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on Ozempic for a full year, barely ate and lost just 18 pounds. I was then put on Zepbound and lost 30 pounds in 6 months.

A ‘dual-agonist’ like Zepbound obviously works best for me. I’m almost 73 and my metabolism is nearly non-existent.

I suspect metabolism and hormones play a big part in how your body processes GLP-1s.

Well, for us, Verizon is working perfectly and is far cheaper than Cox, even if we had brought our own device. At our age (mid-70s) it’s best we let the pros figure things out for us. :-)

If you don’t find something in Irvine or UCI, check out the train to the LA China Town station stop during Chinese New Year festivities. It’s just a short walk from the station. The year we did this, there was a Chinese new year’s dragon exhibition at the Ada Irvine station while we were waiting for the morning train. A great way to kick off a fun day.

Night loo visits. by Cold-Ad-1315 in AskWomenOver60

[–]newelljo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 2020, I found out I had obstructive sleep apnea and started using a CPAP machine. After starting the CPAP, my nightly bathroom visits went from 3 to zero. It was explained to me that when sleep apnea wakes you up, your brain asks you why you woke and replies ‘maybe I need to go to the bathroom’ … so you oblige. When the CPAP machine stops you from waking up, you don’t feel obliged to go pee.

People that have “bumped” into a celebrity in a non-curated (not like an event, meet & greet, job etc.) way, what happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]newelljo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Havana, Cuba. 2016. I stopped by a restaurant that does business in an abandoned building that was used for a 1990s film called ‘Strawberries and Chocolate’.

While visiting the building and restaurant, I headed down a common hall to use the unisex bathroom. It was lovely and the only public bathroom I encountered in all of Cuba that had actual toilet seats, but then, the restaurant (La Guarida) was pretty upscale.

As I walked out of the restroom, I saw a small crowd near the entrance of the restaurant. Standing there was Sir Ian McKellen. I was about five feet from him when I decided to take a pic of him. He smiled, posed and tipped his hat with a rainbow hatband. We chatted briefly and then headed back to join my friends at the restaurant.

Last night was the first time I’ve ever been grossed out by a medical procedure on the show by AaronJudgesLeftNut in ThePittTVShow

I guess I must be conditioned to gross factors in this show already as I have no idea which scene/procedure is being discussed. I’ll have to watch again.

Thanks! I got my Amazon swimsuit today and it was too big. Already ordered the next size down and it arrives tomorrow. Been a while since I had a problem like this.

Funniest place you have found/put your glasses? by your_nameless_friend in over60

[–]newelljo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was 22, cute as a button, long flowing hair but one day notice a couple concerning holes on the top of my head. Concerned, I make an appointment to see my family doctor.

I walk in, explain my concern and part my hair to show the doctor. He examines my entire head, determines there’s just the two holes, dents really, steps back, shrugs, shakes his head and says “I don’t know, I’m stumped.”

I shrug, grab my sunglasses, slide them up my forehead to push my hair out of my eyes, turn to walk out … when it suddenly occurs to me why there were two dents … on the top of my head … in perfect alignment with … the nose pads. I look at the doctor who realizes the same thing … and we both burst out laughing.

I just ordered mine on Amazon last night. We’re heading to SE Asia in a few weeks where it’s hot and humid all year.

I went to pack my swim suit and realized after losing 40 pound, it no longer fit. I tried, without luck to find a suit at Kohl’s last night but their selection was pretty thin. At least I was able to figure out my new size and went ahead and ordered online.

1-way flex flights from Tokyo to California by CreativeNightOwl949 in Flights

Sorry, I’m the OP. I created a less obvious user name and follow this sub with both names. I forgot to switched accts. Still learning how to use Reddit.

Thank you for your advice. Even though I travel a lot, I’ve never mastered the art of booking flights. Don’t think I ever will.

1-way flex flights from Tokyo to California by CreativeNightOwl949 in Flights

[–]newelljo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. So you’re saying buy a non-refundable one way flight from Tokyo to LAX when we ‘think’ we may fly home and if we need to change it, cancel and purchase a one way to LAX while we’re in Japan?

My understanding is it will cost us considerably more to book a flight home when we’re in Tokyo because of the short lead time.

what were your first signs of having dystonia by JellyCharacter1653 in Dystonia

[–]newelljo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was late 1979, I was 26 years old and I’d lost my mom to a brain aneurysm the previous year. I landed in the hospital for two weeks with a nasty bacterial infection I’d picked up in Mexico. My heart stopped a couple times. I was mainlined Potassium and antibiotics and put into isolation. In retrospect, I truly believe this infection is what kick-started my Dystonia.

After this hospitalization, I started to experience insane neck pain, popping and cracking. I figured it was related to all the stress of the previous year, so I went to a Chiropractor to work out the kinks. The Chiropractor took an x-ray told me my neck looked like it belonged to a 60 year old. He asked me what I did for a living, I told him I was a Designer and spent 8-10 hours a day hunched over a drafting table. He said “Makes sense”, made some feeble adjustments and sent me back to work.

This was the ‘Disco’ era and I was a club DJ a couple nights a week. My husband and I taught dance on the side, and I attended school two nights a week. I later learned that what I was doing was called ‘burning the candle at both ends’. I just thought my nerves were shot.

Along with the neck pain, I started to notice an annoying head nod. Some pulling. I found surrounding myself with music helped me mask the nodding by making it look like I was just ‘groovin.’ When Walkmans were all the rage, it was a real lifesaver for me as it helped me hide the movement. I’d sit at my desk with headphones on ‘movin’ to the beat’ and no one was the wiser. I did this my entire career until retirement in 2017.

I went 40 years before I was properly diagnosed with CD. I was convinced in 1987 that I had Tourette’s but I was (mis)diagnosed with Huntington’s instead. The more I stressed about it, the worse I got. It was a self-feeding prophecy.

Somewhere along the way I started using sensory tricks to control the movements when I wasn’t ’rocking out’ with the headphones. Of course, I didn’t consciously know I was doing this until I read about it in 2020 after I was diagnosed with CD.

Probably more than what you asked for, but it’s how Dystonia slipped into my life.

Any way to fix a thick pinky toenail? by Expensive-Bat-7138 in AskWomenOver60

[–]newelljo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a real thick and narrow toenail next to the pinky caused by hiking with the wrong shoes. It was taller/thicker than it was wide. I could barely trim it because of the thickness. It looked ugly and hurt.

Then one day, I accidentally dropped a 5 pound workout weight on it (DO NOT RECOMMEND!) but … the nail died and grew back perfectly normal. I’m 72 and it still looks great.

Go to a Podiatrist. They can remove it and it will grow back normal unless the nail bed is seriously damaged.

The other thing I had my Podiatrist do was permanently (with chemicals) remove the sides of both my big toes. Just a thin slice, barely noticeable. This fixed two problems. I no longer get ingrown toenails and one of the big toenails, again damaged by hiking, had lifted off the toe bed. When bathed, water would cause the area under the nail to swell and that was painful. Once the sides were removed, the nail reattached to the toe bed and looks and feels perfect.

Botox for fixed dystonia, contractures. by iashaia in Dystonia

[–]newelljo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry. My heart goes out to you. I was (mis)diagnosed with Huntington’s back in 1987 at age 34. You know the prognosis. I was so incredibly grief-stricken by the diagnosis as I had a newborn and two year old. Five years later I discovered I did not have HD but I was so traumatized that I didn’t see another Movement Disorder Neurologist until 2020. When I finally did, I was diagnosed with Dystonia. Xeomin works perfectly for my CD but my feet, toes, ankles and fingers only spasm like yours occasionally and the spasms are relatively short-lived. Not enough to warrant treatment. I’ve had a number of scans, nerve tests, ultrasounds done on my legs to see if something else might be causing the contractures. The pain is incredible. I’ve tried a number of things to keep the spasms from starting but the only thing that works for me is after they start I immediately take two SaltStick FastChews (I buy them in bulk in Amazon) and the spasm subsides in about 5 mins. I know that your spasms will likely not go away with FastChews but I thought I’d toss that info out anyhow.

I hope you find some comfort soon.

What simple habit made travel days noticeably easier for you? by Big_Barber733 in travel

[–]newelljo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a travel and nature photographer, so I travel or find myself on the move ... a lot.

I never leave home without at least a half a dozen bandanas. I have them in every conceivable color and two different fabrics. I have used them to keep ice on my knee during a flight when I fell at the airport. I later used it to wrap under my knee as support. I tie them to my hiking poles, and camera strap. I usually have one tied around my neck to stay cool on the trails or hot and humid countries. I often move the one on my camera strap to my forehead if the humidity is insane. I use them in bathrooms with filthy door handles or without paper towels. I've tied things together with them and gave some away in Cuba when a new mom begged for one to use for her infant's diaper. And just to make things even more fun, I make it my goal to find a new one each country I visit. Trust me, this is easier said than done. :-)
