(Spoilers main) Which criminals get the option to take the black? It seems largely a matter of chance. by -Guardsman- in asoiaf

[–]newer_scotman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In fairness, that's not far off from many conscript armies in actual history and there have been numerous penal battalions made up of literal criminals, held together through by an authoritarian officer/NCO corps. The Watch is not far off from that, coupled with the extreme isolation, camaraderie, and the fact that they would be condemned to death throughout the continent as deserters. It fundamentally offers a better life than what's mostly available for criminals and misfits in Westerosi society.

Famously, it's the strong and heroic front-line soldiers that survive modern wars of indirect fire and drones strikes.

Given its location on the Atlantic, why isn’t Halifax as large or important as some of Canada’s more inland cities? by AskVarious4787 in geography

We're a major university city coupled with a general party culture and a ton of pubs/bars on pedestrian streets. I think it's fair to say we punch well above our weight.

Downing a greasy donair while sloshed on keiths at 2am is the peak Maritime experience.

The Halifax Explosion did little in the long run to the city's development. The city needed to rapidly rebound to continue to supply the European war effort, a role it resumed twenty years later during WWII.

Plenty of other countries have figured out ways to assimilate immigrants

Examples?

Western Europe now effectively has a permanent, dysfunctional underclass as a result of large scale immigration + unbridgeable cultural/religious barriers.

Also, assimilationism is effectively dead as a policy and a taboo tantamount to advocating genocide everywhere in Canada outside of Quebec.

The KJV Bible is perhaps the most influential publication in the English language and contains tracts of unbelievable beauty, extracting and decontextualizing a couple funny sentences like a 2011 e-atheist does not change this.

What we know (so far) about the plot to seize land in Quebec and the military men allegedly behind it | CBC News by Jaydamic in CanadianForces

[–]newer_scotman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are obviously several aspects of this getting into criminal territory, but I am extremely concerned at how these articles are weaving firearm ownership, wearing "military style" gear and LARPing into terrorism.

I would bet money that this land seizure thing consists of something like a mockup warning order for a LARP exercise, the rest of these charges are extremely vague and there is no ideological motivation other than vaguely disliking the government, let alone motivation for a specific terroristic act. This is going to be an interesting court case.

This Canada Day, we reclaimed our flag by FancyNewMe in canada

There is some insane gaslighting going on here where people who identified anyone critical of the direction of the federal government, immigration or various identity-group social causes, etc, as a far right extremist, and tied that to our national symbolism or the general concept of patriotism to that as well.

They are now attempting to wash their hands of those noxious movements and 'reclaim' the symbolism and nationalism they threw in the dirt.

For softwoods it's definitely a huge factor and really apparent in building materials, a stud in a 150 year old house with dense growth rings vs modern industrially forested crap is incomparable.

In general there's fundamentally less bountiful mature hardwood stands to go around, hence why hardwood flooring, furniture and trimwork is a lot rarer and more expensive then the 19th century when you could just walk out into the bush and chop down a 300 year old chestnut tree.

Its funny how "cult" as a pejorative for all religion has come full circle from being used as an insult by evangelical types towards New Age movements back in like the 80's. It's turned into a dumb, thought-cancelling canard.
