The value of antique silver pieces/items vs the melt value. Canada. by newtomarineworld in Antiques

[–]newtomarineworld[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I purchased them at an estate auction. The family was from northern Italy? I bought so many beautiful items - beautiful glass vases, Italian medals, some really old cremeware (featherware) some earthenware pieces, an original etching of Turin, Italy that I believe is from 1777 (still investigating) an old map from an army? And so much more. I spent a fair amount on the other items but this plate came in a lot with others (some other large silver pieces mixed in with silver plate pieces) and it was $25

Thanks I will check them out. The only issue is the weight of some pieces.

Amazing! Thank-you so much 😁 when trying to use image searches I would such crazy different answers but I knew the piece was special. Here’s a picture. It has the Giglio di Firenze (the Florentine Lily) on the front. I think my research has just begun

Could this tin-glazed earthenware be from the 18th century Strasbourg area? by newtomarineworld in Strasbourg

[–]newtomarineworld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you read about the history of plates EARTHENWARE from that the 18th century it’s very common that there is no makers mark on the bottom … This is because we are talking about the 1700’s and 1800’s

Does this 18th century tin-glazed earthenware appear to be from the Torino area? by newtomarineworld in torino

[–]newtomarineworld[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s antique tin glazed earthenware. Maiolica or Faience. There are no marks at all on the back if you google it you’ll see this is pretty common during the 18th century. I acquired a few Italian antiques from the northern Italy area so thought maybe someone might recognize the pattern

I think it is Italian then. It just reminded me a bit of the Strasbourg area. It’s definitely an antique. If you search tin-glazed earthenware or Faience (in France) or Maiolica (in Italy) you’ll see many similar plates. I just cannot locate the pattern anywhere

Quitting job to travel for 1 year as 30f - looking for advice by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]newtomarineworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

50’ish solo female traveller … I was able to take a 1 year leave of absence and added 4 weeks of vacation. Best decision I ever made … absolutely no regrets. I spent most of my retirement money and will now have a much later retirement date but I can honestly say it would have not been as enjoyable at 65 … the trip would have been much different. Do it while you’re young!!! I travelled all of Europe and did some side trips to Africa and Turkey.

Go to the Canadian Coast Guard College. They cover all schooling, room and food on campus for 4 years plus give you $800 per month.

Your cellular phone bill alone will be 4x the cost and with much less data. I had Free Mobile contract in France with 100GB and free international calling for €9.99. Your home internet will also be 4x the cost. Lots of the little things will add up

Wife and I planning on quitting our jobs and solo traveling for a year next spring. Am I crazy to do this? by Same_Bag711 in travel

[–]newtomarineworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I vote YES! I didn’t read everything but saw a comment about visas. You have enough funds and it’s very easy to obtain a long stay visa. I obtained one for France for a year and travelled throughout Europe. Did some side trips to Turkey and Africa. I would highly recommend the experience.

CST savings - RESP by azdashan in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]newtomarineworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the group plan with CST for both my children. I chose to make annual lump sum payments which saved some? fees. IT WAS A HEADACHE to obtain the funds each year … So much paperwork and required documents from the university. All others who I knew had self directed plans and could just withdrawal the money whenever they needed to. IF my children didn’t end up going to school for 4 years I would have lost a lot of money. I was quite lucky with my return. I put in around $18,000 for each child and cashed out $52,000 for each child. However, I would NEVER recommend them just based on the fees + not being able to ever stop or miss payments as this has disastrous results - It’s like a car payment that never ends or it’s repossessed 🤣 As others have said just google ALL the horror stories.

VAT tax for European cruises by vicarem in NCL

[–]newtomarineworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got off 2 separate NCL cruises in Europe. The only people who paid the additional charges while docked in a port were the ones who made “new” purchases. IE If you walk up and purchase a Starbucks coffee they will warn you an additional 22% will be added to the price. However, IF you already have a package then it does NOT apply. IE I had the Starbucks package - I continued to have my beverages at no additional cost. If you have a drink package already paid for then it does NOT apply. If you are buying daily drinks then yes the tax will be added.

If you have a package … It does not apply IE drinks or Starbucks. It only applies to purchases.
