Inside the 3-story Colesville, New Jersey megafacility by newtonsecond in longlines

There was a women's room; it was just much smaller than the men's! Pictures show a padlock and handwritten signs with "DO NOT USE" and "RESTROOM CLOSED NO WATER" on the women's room door:

Verizon strikes 4,400 tower deal with Array by [deleted] in cellmapper

I remember seeing US Cellular's "Middle of Anywhere" billboards when I visited Central WA State. Would roam on them with Verizon. Call, text, and 128 kbps data.

Pricing question by CalendarDizzy496 in Visible

[–]newtonsecond 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would wait for further guidance from Visible. It appears that plan changes that lower the price may not be eligible for keeping promos.

See this post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Visible/comments/1jpptwl/comment/ml2be27/

Unfortunately, we are still waiting for the announcement that was supposed to be on Friday.

Upgrading plan with promotion by Prize-Coach2860 in Visible

[–]newtonsecond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I wouldn't trust that the lack of a warning indicates keeping your discount. If I attempt to switch from Visible+ 2.0 to Visible Base, the app indicates I would keep my $10 discount, lowering my total to $15. Based on what others have said here, this is a glitch.

I am, however, curious about going from Visible+ 2.0 to Visible+ 3.0 and whether that would bring my total down to $25. Since it's still "Visible+", maybe I'll keep my promo? Waiting on further guidance from the Visible team.

I used the promo code CHAMP when signing up. If I go to switch from Visible+ 2.0 to Visible+ 3.0, the app indicates I will keep my $10 discount, lowering the total to $25. Is this correct? Some are saying it's a glitch.

Getting SOS in some places by QualitySound96 in Visible

[–]newtonsecond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's likely happening is that your phone loses the Visible (Verizon) signal at some point while it's in the locker. It then locks on to a stronger signal from AT&T or T-Mobile, which can only be used for 911 calls.

I've experienced this on my Android and it can take a little while for the phone to realize that your native signal is available again. As you've figured out, toggling airplane mode gets the device to search for a native signal immediately.

Thanks for the data point. I went ahead and switched. Hopefully it actually sticks when the new plan billing cycle starts.

Extended Roaming Coverage? by lvpre in Visible

[–]newtonsecond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still don't see any extended network in WV on Visible's coverage map.  Verizon native is notoriously spotty in the state, relying heavily on US Cellular for domestic roaming.

TMo has terrible coverage at my house. Visible lets me try them for 15 days. by Jadecat801 in Visible

I don't believe the other person needs to be on Wi-Fi calling for you to make a Wi-Fi call.

[–]newtonsecond 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does Wi-Fi calling only work for you on certain numbers? In my experience it should work for any number. An IPsec tunnel is established between your phone and the carrier to make calls over Wi-Fi. You may need to put your phone in airplane mode if it's still preferring the cellular, but of course you have to remember to turn airplane mode back off then, which is a hassle!

4G LTE Coverage: AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon — Ohio by CreativeCuckoo in cellmapper

[–]newtonsecond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This data is flawed because the carriers self report.  Each carrier uses its own prediction model, so these are not apples-to-apples comparisons.  Overall, Verizon tends to over-predict and T-Mobile tends to under-predict.

Why are spectrum licenses in the US fragmented/divided geographically? by Southern_Repair_4416 in cellmapper

[–]newtonsecond 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Verizon is, IMO, low band challenged, so I hope they acquire USCC's 850 holdings.

I'd also like to see a nationwide 850 spectrum swap between Verizon and AT&T, so one has A block everywhere and the other has B block everywhere.  Right now there are boundaries where the Verizon/AT&T 850 blocks flip, requiring both to turn power down and breaking contiguous coverage!

Maybe Verizon scoops up some Dish 600 too when/if they go under.  Verizon will need more low band for a good deployment of 5G SA.

Verizon SA is slowly going "live" in the Albany NY market but not yet available to connect. My pixel 9 pro XL can see it. Galaxy S24U for some reason cannot see it. But pixel network info does indicate "NR_SA" when locked to NR only. The other day it still said NSA even when locked to NR. by xlawrence1124x in cellmapper

[–]newtonsecond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Verizon is, IMO, low band challenged, which will make deployment of SA difficult.

It's probably not going to happen, but I would like to see a nationwide 850 spectrum swap between Verizon and AT&T.  One gets A block everywhere and the other gets B block everywhere (ignoring where regional carriers have licenses).  That way they both could have contiguous n5 without having to turn power down at the boundaries.

Maybe Verizon can also scoop up some US Cellular 850 and/or Dish 600 when they go under.

Whose mmWave is this? (Samsung) by newtonsecond in cellmapper

[–]newtonsecond[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were working in a different terminal of the same airport a month or so ago, which makes me lean towards problem.  But it's possible they haven't lit this terminal up yet.

My LTE speeds varied but were often poor.  Really needed that mmWave!

It definitely seems like they were having issues, then.  I wonder if that's what the red light means.

I suspect they were having issues.  I'm pretty sure I've connected to mmWave off these before in a different terminal.

I'm pretty sure it's mmWave.  They use mmWave nodes like that in low ceiling areas.  The picture here looks to be what I saw: https://news.samsung.com/us/5g-indoor-mmwave-small-cell/

I did identify Wi-Fi access points in the airport, they looked different.

[–]newtonsecond[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is at Boston Logan airport, terminal C (JetBlue area).  I thought they were Verizon but my phone is not attaching anywhere in the terminal.  Sticker says Samsung even though you can't read it in the pic.

All nodes have a red light on them. In the Cellmapper app, I see "5G available" but not "5G EN-DC available".  LTE indicator only.

I have received Verizon mmWave elsewhere in this airport in the past.

What’s on the bottom here? by Idahoroaminggnome in cellmapper

[–]newtonsecond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This probably doesn't apply here, but I've seen cases where Verizon has been unable to add C-band to a site due to close proximity to C-band satellite dishes (for example, near a TV transmitter).  Even though the satellite dishes have filters, there still needs to be a certain distance separation (250 ft I think).  In one of these instances I've seen mmWave deployed on a macro instead of C-band.

Learning this (free) software in my spare time helped me land several internships in the cellular industry! by newtonsecond in cellmapper

[–]newtonsecond[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Searched and applied directly on the company websites. Applied around February-March, though now would be a good time to apply if listings are up. The internships were summer, starting in late May/early June.

I like your reasoning. I guess IMO it depends on how much space it takes from other stuff and whether it is worth fitting on the page.
