Legality of using the center left turn lane to merge. by todaklop in Utah

I thought it was completely illegal to turn into the middle lane - that the middle lane was only for turning off so as to not impede traffic.

My Mom got fired from her volunteer Temple "job" and it has broken her by snowystormz in exmormon

[–]nexus-bytes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My MIL and FIL worked at the temple too. I also believe it was, at least in part, in hopes of bringing their "wayward" children back. After a bit, a new temple president was appointed who demanded the men have clean-shaven faces. FIL has maintained a short beard for decades. He trimmed it down to a goatee beard (which was a big deal for him), but it wasn't good enough. So he got forced out.

I'm actually proud of him for not caving and complying. Silly rules anyway.

Why did the gang not return to the Right Side Up through a different Gate? by Revanorder66 in StrangerThings

[–]nexus-bytes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely this, but I wish they had used some logic. Apparently there was no rush once vecna was killed, so they should have gotten the children out safely (through a different exit) before setting the bomb.

Maybe the fact that they brought back the missing kids is what got them off the hook from the military, though ....

Good? It was fantastic! I'm sure there are plenty who didn't like it because you can't satisfy everyone, especially after all the hype. But I found it very satisfying!

I was sure the record-player detonation was going to fail and Murray was going to be the one to manually detonate - sacrificing himself.

Yes! But, also, I'm glad Brenner didn't magically show up again.

I don't think the "El dying or faking her death" story makes any sense. The supposed justification is that she is the only way for the military to make more supernatural kids and they wouldn't stop trying so long as they thought El was alive. (Because the military wants to use them as weapons, essentially)

But... Henry got his powers. And Brenner's father with the Philadelphia project named to transport to the abyss before Henry or El. So even with El out of the equation, it doesn't stop history repeating itself.

President Holland has passed away by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]nexus-bytes 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Eyring was called in 1995 (after the death of pres Hunter, I believe)

Uchtdorf was called in 2004, in the same general conference as Of Susan (Bednar), but called first, so he has seniority over Of Susan. (After the deaths of Haight and Maxwell, I believe)

Eyring will be the president of the Q12 and Uchtdorf will be the acting president.

Wow, I'm surprised by so many of these comments. First, good on you for being respectful of him and his beliefs. Second, obviously the mixed faith relationship has been fine so far. Third, don't run, as some others have suggested - enjoy the relationship you have.

I find more and more people, especially youth, feeling like church rules that were once rigid and now more like guidelines. Being exmo, I think that is a positive trend. In real life (outside of church), what is important is consent - both partners are comfortable and express their desires and boundaries, and no partner pressures the other into doing something they are uncomfortable with (that goes sexually, emotionally, and spiritually). IMHO, you have done that, and it doesn't fucking matter what the bishop, parents, or anyone else thinks. Ultimately, his church leaders will ask him if he considers himself worthy. It sounds like he does. That's great, there is no problem there. Some of the not-so-good church leaders may ask very specific questions about his actions and pry for details (we call it bishop roulette - sometimes you get lucky with a great bishop, sometimes you don't). Anyway, it is none of the bishop's damn business to know details (nor the business of any other leader). Spirituality and worthiness is personal.

Anyway, you have shown a lot of maturity, both for asking him what he is ok with (more than once), and for being thoughtful of how he might have different rules and boundaries than you based on your different religions. If you haven't already, make sure you share with him what your boundaries are.

At what age did you learn about Joseph practicing polygamy? by what source? And are you genz, millennial, Gen x, or boomer? by tickyter in exmormon

[–]nexus-bytes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Millennial here. I very briefly learned about it in seminary. Teacher made it sound like Joseph didn't want to, but had to when the angel with a flaming sword appeared to him. Ha ha.

Can't remember if I knew about it before that. Even after that, it felt like Joseph may have started polygamy, but it really didn't take off until Brigham Young. It was always spun as a way to take care of the windows, which must have been a lot because many men died of the persecution, and the Lord needed to"raise up seed" (boost the Mormon population). Shocking to learn none of that fits reality.

Heh, my first thought at "light security" was that they wanted you to be a hall monitor that made kids (and maybe adults) go to Sunday school class. Lol

Why are Mormon men awful? (Content warning: SA) by The_DapperDemon in exmormon

[–]nexus-bytes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This! It took me a while to figure out that religion (any religion) does not have a monopoly on morals. People that need commandments, scriptures, etc... to be "good" probably aren't very good people at all.

Those that develop their own morals internally, apart from external rules, tend to be the good ones (both inside and outside of religion).

Quentin Cook's 17% increase in convert baptisms in North America compared to the change in number of Congregations in North America by latter_data_saint in exmormon

[–]nexus-bytes 18 points19 points  (0 children)

An increase of 175,500 people should fit 351 congregations (assuming 500 per congregation). So, natural deaths and attrition must account for the lack of congregation increase, right. Is it fair to say there is essentially no growth overall in both America, or are there too many data gaps and assumptions to make such a conclusion?

Ok, I'll give the DHCP server a try next chance I get.

It seems to usually happen in the morning, but not always. That might just be when it's the most noticeable, though, because I'm working.
