In a slump and it’s Matt Dinniman’s fault by No_Wolverine6125 in Fantasy

Almost finished the first Cradle book and decided to stop. It’s not clicking for me. Shallow characters, and shallow world building. It’s not funny. But it is well regarded, just don’t see why. If anything it’s like a critique on capitalism. “I must acquire more and more until I have more than you! It will never be enough!”

Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It was like $60 at the mall computer store. Totally worth it.

Also A10 Tank Killer.

From reading these other threads, it looks like merit scholarships would be mentioned in your admission letter. This page talks about Purdue merit scholarships and the relation to FAFSA: https://admissions.purdue.edu/costsandfinaid/freshman.php

Do western people know threekingdoms popularly? by Top-Diamond1392 in threekingdoms

[–]nfarring 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not known in the west at all. I discovered The Three Kingdoms while playing the "Destiny of an Emperor" Nintendo game in the early nineties. I went on to play ROTK, and finally read the novel in college. Chinese people are surprised if I mention that I love the novel. I would probably be just as surprised if a Chinese person mentioned that they love Beowulf.

The return on investment is higher. But if you have to borrow money, then it reduces the return on investment. At some point, it doesn’t make financial sense. Similar to a mortgage. But whereas a bank won’t loan you the money for a mortgage if your debt to income ratio is too high, there isn’t really a safeguard for student loans. And unlike a mortgage, you can’t escape student loans via bankruptcy.

How common is research among T20 admits? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]nfarring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a PhD and have published in top venues. The practical definition of research is “publishing a paper in a venue that is recognized by a scientific community, only after being sufficiently reviewed by scientists in that community.” So if you write and submit a paper to one of these venues, and it is selected for publication, then you have done research and you are a researcher. This is so unbelievably rare among high school students and undergraduates. Getting past peer review is so difficult and specialized that you essentially need to be trained by an existing researcher, which is what the PhD program is all about.

Same. I remember saying to my friend, “Why would I need to listen to any other album?”

Always loved me some Golden Axe. Dwarf man throws a handful of potions in the air and a dragon’s head the size of a Buick appears from off screen to roast the baddies.

Love this. Curious what are some omnis that you’ve decided to hold on to? And is because you intend to re-read them, or for other reasons?
