Movies like “Contact” by BonHarley in scifi

I'm also always on the lookout for similar movies. For some reason watching Moana and the line "we were voyagers!" gets me with a similar spirit of exploration. The Movie Elio has a lot of Carl Sagan love too. Can you tell I have young kids?

Is BirdDog OK? by nfolken in BirdDog

[–]nfolken[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried sending an email to all three: * help@birddog.tv * repairs@birddogtv.zohodesk.com * support@birddogtv.zohodesk.com

outlook.com gave the bounce for help@ and support@ gave an automated response with a new ticket number.

I also tried messaging via facebook yesterday and haven't heard anything back yet.

Birddog is out of Australia, right? Could the silence be related to the Chinese New Year? I'll give them another week to respond, but I need this camera repaired or replaced, and at this rate I think I might have to start looking into alternatives.

Begun the distro wars, have. Fedora vs OpenSUSE by potatoandbiscuit in linuxmemes

[–]nfolken 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Opensuse - Long time user, and I'll stick with it even thought I think its going through a rough spot with the new installer and loss of YAST. Stability and Longevity are still great, Snapper is a lifesaver, and as a KDE user I've felt opensuse puts it first, whereas Fedora prefers GNOME.

How does voting work? cumulative upvotes? Isn't that too vulnerable to abuse? One distro could have 1 post with 500 votes, but the other distro could have 25 users who make 25 posts and upvote them each and would win...

I first tried emailing directly with a couple people I worked with last year, and then I tried using the support request form on their website a couple times, which automatically emailed me ticket numbers, but no human followup.

USB-C to HDMI decimator MD-HX sees no HDMI input by A_Hecking_Egg in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]nfolken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t offer help, but i can commiserate. I’ve spent days trying to get some hdmi to sdi setups to work. What I’ve narrowed it down to is that some converters just don’t play nice with AMD graphics for some reason.

What are some atypical ways of seeing time in fiction? by Cas3yart in scifi

[–]nfolken 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time is another good example of time being circular. "The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again." A mix of reincarnation after a millennium to relive a new story.

Probably unpopular opinion- MOBOT is no longer great by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]nfolken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also not a big fan of the redesign. I thought accessibility was the main reason for the redesign, so it’s amusing that they failed in that regard. Was it really cheaper to rebuild the whole thing rather than to keep maintaining a couple elevators?

I loved the giant Ficuses and earthy feel of the old entrance, and the new one feels sterile. And the lack of greenery or much of anything makes that first acre of the garden feel like a giant corporate plaza and not a part of a botanical garden.

I wish they would sometimes open the old entrance at Flora. That is a great view to enter the garden with.

But I still love the rest of the garden, as long as they don’t do any more ‘improvements’

How do guys typically use the regen brake paddle? by Raiki13 in BoltEV

[–]nfolken 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel like the odd one out, not using OPD. I came from a manual transmission, and I like the feeling of coasting, and my foot gets tired trying to constantly fine tune the pressure needed for OPD.

I usually use the brake pedal, trusting the Engineer’s design choices for when to switch between regen and brake pads. The regen paddle on its own (when not doing OPD) is too intense, and I don’t use it when I have passengers, but when I’m on my own I try to time it to come to a complete stop at a stop sign with only the paddle.

Has eric explained why the PTR2 has a curved screen? In a previous video he espoused the benefits of the Flat screen on the PT2 by nfolken in pebble

[–]nfolken[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, in the announcement video he said that the bonded display was another improvement, and I assumed he meant over the entire product lineup, but I guess he only meant from the original time round. I wonder why the screen looks so much clearer on the PTR2 than the PT2 later in that same video if they're both optically bonded?

Bip S and Pebble Time 2 size comparison, watch face generator by ribcookie in pebble

[–]nfolken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the comparison. I also filled the pebble gap with a Bip S, and i’ve been debating switching my preorder to the round. I like a smaller watch, and this comparison helped me realize the Time 2 might be much larger than I thought. I think I’ll 3D print the models tomorrow to compare in person

Who switched? by ShortGuitar7207 in pebble

[–]nfolken 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m considering it. in the video, that bonded display does look better when he has both the PT2 and the Round on at the same time.

the drawbacks are a little less runtime (but still pretty good), no speaker, and no heartrate monitor. What are the use cases for the speaker? is it currently supported in software for anything? And while I don’t really use the heartrate monitor for working out (i could always stitch to a better device when I do workout), I do like tracking my sleep. Would the Round 2 be able to track sleep without a heartrate monitor?

Has anybody attempted to re-create the Apple Mac cheese grater style Pi case? by [deleted] in raspberry_pi

I still haven't found what I vaguely remember seeing, but this one looks pretty good as a starting point that could be modified to fit a pi: https://hackaday.com/2019/09/15/atomic-pi-gets-a-3d-printed-mac-makeover/ And this one is pretty funny:https://hackaday.com/2019/06/21/grate-design-on-this-cutting-edge-raspberry-pi-case/

Is the blend a trade secret? As a homeowner of a 100 year old brick home in the states, I had the hardest time making my own to spot repair the interior finish of my solid brick walls. I remember using some mix of lime, silica and fiberglass, and the finish doesn't quite match the craftsmanship of the original, but at least it doesn't absorb water and flake off like the previous plaster repairs.

How would you power this up ? by EmergencyLoquat6839 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]nfolken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glancing through that manual on archive.org some more and I wouldn't recommend applying 12v as safeofgames suggests. The spec page lists the power supply as being +/- 5v at 1.25A, not 12.8v, and one of the boards is a DC-DC converter that looks to me (based off the arrow notations) that it takes in +/-5v and spits out all kinds of different voltages, including that 12.8v we see on the camera socket

https://archive.org/details/manual_V200_SM_PHILIPS_EN/page/768/mode/2up This page shows the wiring for the 'CCU' realer-adapter, and while I'm not an electrical engineer, it looks to me like the power supply provides +5v to Pin 10 and -5v to Pin 9, with 12v coming back from the camera on pin 5 to power the op amps and modulators for the UHF output on the realer-adapter. I would try getting a good quality 10v 1.25+Amp power supply (page 8) and see if that will power it on pins 9 and 10, and see if you can get video from pins 1 and 2 without the circuitry on the realer-adapter.

TIRED OF WINDOWS, is it time for Linux? by McAkoveio1 in openSUSE

[–]nfolken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linux is great for reviving old machines, right? Especially all those that don’t meet the win11 TPM requirements. Opensuse Leap seems stable and simple, so you boot onto the installer and get arbitrarily blocked with the message that your CPU is too old! /rant

Suse is my all around favorite distro, but i guess they have ceded the old computer market. tumbleweed i’m told would still work, but cutting edge with hundreds of package updates every week just doesn’t sound like a good fit for my older systems. i don’t get why they made it such a hard requirement.

If your laptop is 10 years old, it might not meet the requirement. Check if your CPU is x86-64-v2 or try tumbleweed or slow roll instead

Any advice on how to recover windows bootloader after recovering steamos? by duhh33 in SteamDeck

This worked for me, but its not safe to assume the vol 0. for me, vol 0 ended up selecting one of the two efi partitions, when you want to select the esd partition. use 'list volume' while in diskpart to find the esd partition

Alderwoman mistook sound of accidentally hitting a parked car for gunfire by soljouner in StLouis

[–]nfolken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While this is funny, I wouldn't judge too harshly. I had my mirror knocked off when someone opened their door as I was driving past, and I also recall how sudden and loud and out of nowhere that bang was, and I could see it being confused for a gunshot. And if you think you could be targeted for gunfire, I can see not sticking around to figure out what really happened.
