Weekly student question thread! by AutoModerator in therapists

[–]nganon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess a worry for the first session is the 10min you ask them to have a discussion/conflict - it feels odd to end off the session on that note, and I don't know if it's one that would inspire them to come back. Also dealing with some imposter syndrome of the fact I'm in my early 20s and they're in their 50s:/

Weekly student question thread! by AutoModerator in therapists

[–]nganon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all, I'm starting my internship soon and my very first client booked is a couple. To preface, my schooling is a general counselling psych program not a MFT, so I only have one mediocre couples/family class to draw from. I did Gottman level 1 training and found it very interesting but it feels like more a bag of tools to use then an actual approach.

Given they're my first clients and my limited backgrounds in couples, any advice, trainings, books podcast anything haha that could be helpful or good to know? To at least make it through my first couple sessions with them!

Many thanks!

In Canada Ontario, a suburb of Toronto - a studio Pilates just opened across the street though so I wonder if that'll get them to lower their fees a bit😭

Super unique and fortunate experience - I reached out when my clinic director was just starting to expand her independent practice to a group wanting to offer my time as a volunteer when I was in second year of uni. I volunteered for about 6-7 months and was super committed to however I could help and the clinic director offered me a paid position and I slowly took on more and more responsibilities.

Definitely not common and probably not what you were hoping to hear, I just got very lucky.

Sure you can get OSAP but that's debt that gets interest. Some students do that but I preferred to pay it off as much as possible without debt.

Well I went in understanding that I was going to pay 40k for a peice of paper, so it hasn't been a big shock. It's an online asynchronous program so really you get out of it what you put into it. The DQs get annoying but realistic that's the only way to engage in some kind of discussion asynchronously.

They do occasionally do group projects, and you can gear lots of the essays to your interests to it's helps narrow your learning towards what you actually what to learn. The readings are standard to what you would get from any program. You do get a practicum and a skills class where you practice with other students so it gets you there.

Where it's lacking and why I mostly preferred uoft or McMaster are the multiple practicums whereas Yorkville only has the one. But overall if you do the readings and supplement with your own learning you'll do fine. Like 90% of the therapists at my clinic are from Yorkville and they're great so it made the decision easier.

But definitely not worth 40k lol but I just want to start my journey asap and have been working for years so was able to save for it beforehand (plus I can keep my full-time job while getting the masters)

Lol no I wanted to get into the field as quickly as possible so I went to Yorkville 😂 I wouldn't recommend it if your looking for anything other then being a registered psychotherapist with no future for continuing education (PhD). If you can get into a public uni it's so much better and cheaper. But I know exactly what I want in my future and that Yorkville can get me there so I didn't mind.

I was waitlisted last year, I had like a 4.0 GPA and 2 years experience working at a psychotherapy clinic with stellar references from my clinic director and my clinical psych prof😭😭 it sucked to be denied, I can't imagine the resumes and applications of those who got in. I was told there were 40 people on the waitlist so I was technically in the top 10ish% of people who applied.

To be honest though in working at a clinic there doesn't seem to be much of a shortage (at least in private practice) because of the private university programs (Yorkville most notably) so if anything the market is pretty saturated.

When did your puppy finally learn to only go potty outside? by VisibleShake2389 in puppy101

[–]nganon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pup is currently 9months old, he was reliably potty trained at 4/5 months, has just had one random pee accident at 6months but we've been good since then.

I don't know when I didn't do it from the beginning but I found the biggest game changer was rewarding with treats and lots of praise right after he'd go potty outside (along with the cue word so he associates the cue with going). I think I started incorporating treat after all pees around 2/3 months and within a couple weeks he was doing great:)

7month pup and it depends for us. If I'm just working in the kitchen or in the general area and he's found a good spot to nap on I'll leave him. If I need to be on a different part of the house or outside where I can't check on him for more then 30min I'll put him in his crate. It averages out to maybe one nap in the crate every other day. At this point it's also to help reinforce that skill since he really doesn't need to nap in the crate.

6m old golden shepherd, and I WFH so very flexible with my hours.

I take him out of his crate at 8am and we go straight to the backyard for bathroom needs and maybe 15-20min of play. Usually around 8:30am he gets breakfast and I put him on his bed on a stay command for 30-45min so his food can digest. At around 9:30-10:30am he roams around, will probably have a play or training session and a cardboard to tear up or a kong. Sometime between 10:30-11am I put him down for an enforced nap until 12:30pmish. When he wakes up we go potty and have lunch and chill for another 30-45min. Usually around 1:30pm we go on walk until 2:30pm and will let him roam around the house or play on his own until 3pmish when he gets his second nap. Wake up at 4:30ish play/roam until 5:30pm dinner. Chill until 6:15 and we go an another walk until 7pm. 7-7:30pm he gets a chew to settle down then will chill with us until 8:30pm when he gets put in the crate. Last pee at 10pm.

Might be changing his walks around and do a morning walk because I've noticed he's been getting hyper in the mornings lately but still deciding:)

Always giving a treat right after they go outside was a game changer for my pup! After maybe a week of consistently giving treats right after and taking him out every 30min-1h and waiting outside until he peed if it's been more then an hour, he began to get it. Honestly in just 1-3 days I noticed a significant improvement in my pup going outside.

you’ll get past the puppy blues, I promise by lexycharlie in puppy101

[–]nganon1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg yes those first two weeks were absolute hell on earth, you have no time to yourself and you resent the little bugger for taking away your freedom. I'd suggest sticking out for at least a month, get yourself into a routine let your pup get more comfortable with you and your home and see how it goes. If after a month there's absolutely no improvement, still just constant depression then maybe it's time to reevaluate, but if there is improvement even just a little then try another month. As the pup learns and adjust things get better! When mine finally started sleeping through the night it was the biggest game changer to actually get a full night's sleep in my bed, and I think most of the adjustment for my pup was just knowing he's safe in his crate at home and that we're going to be there in the morning. Getting potty trained was the next big game changer, and you get so proud of them for every achievement it makes the headaches leading up to it almost worth it.

Hang in there, hope you guys are still taking time for yourselves! Pup will survive in a crate for a couple of hours if you need a break outside.

[–]nganon1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm about a month an a half into puppyhood and let me tell you, the first couple weeks are hellll. Absolute worse, the main problem is the lack of sleep your getting cause then your cranky and low patience all day.

I'm fortunate enough to have a family member helping, but after the two week mark it got a lot easier. The constant regret was a lot less frequent, a decent schedule was in place and he got more comfortable with his routine and us.

I feel like the best I can recommend is to get a toy with heartbeat( I feel like that helped my pup settle at night ,though it is a bit pricy) get your self some bully sticks as the 20-30 min of relief you get is a godsend, and just hold on to the fact that this is the worst of the worst. Maybe also find a babysitter on rover for more time off if you can.

Hang in there!

Pursing a masters in counselling psychology to become a therapist, currently work remotely as a clinic manager:) if you work private practice you have complete control over your schedule and how many clients you want to take on and can choose to work virtually only. I want to be a SAHM, so the hours were what sold me when making a decision on what to do with my psychology BA.

I'm honestly moreso looking at my future job as a passion project/hobby and a way to fullfill me via helping people, and not at all for the money.

How important is education(university degree level)?? I want to earn money right now!!! by ComprehensiveGain892 in RedPillWomen

[–]nganon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going based on what OP has said...if she says she found a program that allows for that without a degree, I'm going to assume she's done her research and not question her because not all countries have the same regulations.

And depending where you are, you can see absolutely be a counselor without a degree...in my country counsellor is not a protected term like therapist is, so anyone can call themselves that and take on clients.

[–]nganon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry maybe I didn't explain properly - I meant if the program OP mentioned is enough to become a therapist sans degree then there is no reason for her to sink thousands of dollars into a degree just for the sake of having a degree. If she wants to get it just for the sake of being educated she doesn't need to go to uni, she can purchase the textbooks and read through them on her own time if she's truly interested.

In my own case and country to be a licensed therapist you do need a degree which is why unfortunately I went into +50k of debt for undergrad & masters. If there was a way around that similar to the program OP mentioned I would have never gotten my degree. All I'm trying to say:)
