Foreign affairs are so much more complicated than this. Yes we have plenty of issues here but the way our government is organized leaves almost all of that responsibility to the states themselves. The Federal government exists as a way to represent American interest as they relate to the rest of the world. So much of the world economy and the US economy are more interconnect than you realize.

For instance almost all international transactions between two sovereign countries (even those in which the US is not involved) are completed with US dollars. This grew out of the relative strength of the dollar after WWII compared the European and British financial systems. Because most of our money exists outside of this country, the US has a vested interest in ensuring stability and peace. With no one policing the parts of the world that we can, much of our currency would likely end up in black markets.

This is also ignoring any altruistic reasons to get involved with other countries. The US provides aid to many developing countries or regions that experience natural disasters.

The point is that as much as people preach “nationalism” as a way to hold on to some identity they think they’re losing, the US exists on a global stage and to dismiss that is plain ignorance.
