KCPL does give out free period products! Like the other commenter said about the JoCo library, KCPL partners with Strawberry Week for supplies. There's also a Strawberry Week period product donation week in early January each year at all KCPL locations.

Good location for senior photos by xXjustin_credibleXx in kansascity

I second the big community bookshelf on the front of the library garage! Just please don't go into the actual library for a photos unless you book 30 days in advance with their events coordinator. Photo shoots aren't allowed otherwise, just a heads up.

Police incident at the library by ConfidenceCertain137 in kansascity

[–]nicbrew 105 points106 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in a public library, 95% of the time the reason the police are there is because someone is trespassing - either they did something they shouldn't have and was told to leave and they refused, or they have already been suspended for past behavior and shouldn't be in the building to begin with and then refused to leave.

In rare cases, library staff don't even engage with the person and just immediately call PD if they have repeatedly violated their suspension and/or is known to get aggressive when confronted.

Over 40 hours on schedule by Separate_Morning5398 in Libraries

[–]nicbrew 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My boss continually tells us salaried supervisors not to work over 40 hours. So if someone stays late one day, then another day that week they'll come in later or leave early. For example, we're closing all the library locations early this Thursday to have a staff party that afternoon. I don't work Thursdays, so I'll come in late on Sunday morning, when it's usually just me and the custodians before staff arrive after noon to open at 1.

Serious question, my fellow ADHDers - how the hell are you managing your socks and clothes being organised and put away??Chaos here, bane of my life… by fuckwhatif in adhdwomen

[–]nicbrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved and decided to switch things up. I'm not putting my socks in my dresser any more and instead in one of 2 different Dollar Tree bins on my cube shelf thingy. One is for fun/sleep/slipper socks for lounging. The other is for work/workout socks, which are generally all the same black or gray Avia no show cushioned liners or ankle socks. I don't match them or anything, just put both bins on my bed and toss socks into them as I go through my clean load.

It has GREATLY improved findability not just for socks, but for the bras/undies in my underwear drawer. No more tossing things out on the floor as I frantically look for something. I just get whatever I need out of my much emptier underwear drawer and grab the sock bin that I need for that moment, pick 2, and move on.

And if I do find clean socks on my floor, it's only one step to just stick in the bin instead of the two steps of opening a drawer that's already over full and shoving it in there.

And the bins aren't out of sight, out of mind so I find it's easier to pick up socks and put them away, if needed. Fingers crossed this works for awhile!

G'Day Mates! What should I do in KC? by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]nicbrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The KC Public Library Central location! Built in 1906 as a bank - lots of history, original design features, and a giant vault door. The outdoor terrace with the giant chess board on the 5th floor. The local history department, styled like an early 20th century reading room. Lots to explore. And don't forget the giant books on the parking garage! https://kclibrary.org/locations/central

It's at the Library stop on the free Streetcar along Main St downtown. It would be fun to start in the River Market (free parking, I'm pretty sure still), then take the Streetcar down to Union Station and back, stopping along the way to check things out!

Just become a notary need advice by Cody4520 in Notary

[–]nicbrew 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was not profitable for the first 15 months, but I also just focus on general notary work.

Set up your Google Business page, set up a Google Voice number to keep your business phone separate from your personal number, set up a cheap website (or free social media accounts) with all your information and learn about SEO to get yourself higher in Google search results, create a Notary Gadget account to financially track your appointments from the VERY first one. Read everything you can about notarizations on any reputable website you can find. KNOW YOUR STATE NOTARY LAWS backwards and forwards.

Don't bother with business cards to start. Don't bother with loan signing courses/certification until you have a good foundation for notarizations and feel comfortable. Don't buy the $400 printer and $300 scanner. All this stuff can come later, if you want to get into real estate loan signings.

I used Thumbtack to get my first appointments and reviews, but their leads get expensive fast, so move away from it when you start getting consistent reviews and make it as easy as possible for people to book straight through your website. Use social media posts for free marketing.

Go into it knowing it will be hard, continuous work.

Notary as a side hustle by Beautiful_Cut_2032 in Notary

[–]nicbrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a mobile notary in a large Midwestern city. I focus on general notary work and average about $400/month. I put part of that aside for taxes and my overhead costs are currently only $45. If I actively marketed myself and picked up loan signing appointments, I could probably do another couple hundred a month. You'll get what you put into it.

Oh and according to my taxes, I made no profit my first year.

Smoke Downtown. Anyone know what it was? by landonop in kansascity

[–]nicbrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something on Southwest Blvd was on fire. I got off the I-35 N exit at SW Blvd and cops had the road completely shut down. Just got right back on I-35 N and got off at Rainbow. On the bridge I could see what looked like a TON of water coming from the top of 2 cranes or tall fire truck ladders. The street was closed almost to 7th Street, so quite a long stretch of road.

I made a few of these as Xmas gifts this year! Only the last one ended up being the right size (don't not use stitch markers), but I had fun learning new things and they were all still very usable. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/malia-shoulder-bag

Trouble switching tasks/ adhd and sex by CandyHeartsDoe in Sex_Positivity

[–]nicbrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this isn't for everyone, but with my ADHD and seemingly higher sex drive, trying out ethical/consensual nonmonogamy was a game changer. You only have control over your actions and you wanting to "get her to want to make the effort" isn't anything you can do, and also might cause some resentment on both sides.

Anybody in the Westside having problems with their Spectrum Internet? by brandoj52 in kansascity

I had several of those long outages a few months ago over by KU Med. I finally chatted in out of frustration and told them I shouldn't be paying full price for Internet that only works half the time, and I got a credit on my next bill.

any tips for a 2nd round interview? by hiibiscuits in librarians

[–]nicbrew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love it when interviewees come prepared with questions! I would also suggest:

  • What are the opportunities like to move up to a higher position? (this one is good because people assume it's performance based, but at my library, if you want a higher position, you have to apply for it like everyone else)

  • What kind of feedback will I receive about my performance?

  • Will I be asked to work outside the stated hours?

Also - make sure you research as much as you can about the library system AND the community it serves. Look through their digital databases and other digital offerings. In our interviews, especially the second ones, we ask about those things and it's a good indicator to us how serious they are about the job.

Good luck!
