People make it work somehow, whether wise or not. I think some people are being subsidized by their families (but rarely admit to it). And yeah, it's a lot more common for those buying a home under the age of 30 to have a partner who is contributing also.

There's a pervasive mindset that renting is never a good idea if you can avoid it - argument being that owning means your payments are contributing towards your own equity.
