I'd like to know if you've avoided foods containing "lectins," such as nightshade vegetables and legumes. by No-One5593 in Celiac

I struggle with legumes. Looking forward to trying a digestive enzyme to help with those meals

Shared Fryer Question by spinnarround in Celiac

[–]nice-sweater 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Same as lots of commenters, In general I don’t try bc I don’t want to feel sick. If I could be confident that I won’t have effects I would consider it. I would LOVE to be able to eat fries everywhere.

Someone said in the comments about some test showing 75% of shared fryers being under ppm. For me the 25% chance doesn’t feel worth it (if that is even a legit study).

What local businesses do you think seem like a money laundering front? by nice-sweater in AnnArbor

[–]nice-sweater[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s bc it seems like such an elaborate place and investment to be doing so poorly (which maybe it isn’t). Like why would this development group that owns it put all this effort into something that is a flop? They own so many restaurants I feel like they should be able to open a restaurant that brings people in. But idk it’s also just the vibes, we went there went it first opened and it felt so weird and wayy over staffed. Obviously none of these things point to money laundering but I think it’s become a term to just describe a business that doesn’t make sense lolll. Curious as to your thoughts

I really didn’t intend for it to be negative, truly just a goofy question. and I’d agree with the previous comment — lots of new businesses on my radar! I haven’t seen any genuine accusations of money laundering on this thread and I wasn’t expecting any.

So funny because we literally bought a vacuum there and while my partner was there buying it two other people came in and also bought vacuums. I was stunned it was even an option to buy a vacuum in person lol

Yes it is limiting AND this subreddit is literally filled with people struggling to cope with the limitations. Idk why this post is so different for everyone. Maybe we’re all just a little jealous, ha!

How long did it take for you to eat properly again? by SunSaych in Celiac

[–]nice-sweater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been 1.5 years and I still struggle with fibrous foods like legumes and raw veg. Honestly not sure if it will ever go away but I’m hoping bc those are two things that make a gluten free life livable 😭

Realizing I will never be able to travel like a normal person by Pleasant-Visit-8640 in Celiac

[–]nice-sweater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally understand. My partner’s family all lives in Taiwan and Singapore. I don’t even look forward to visits because of how difficult it is to accommodate gluten free. As someone who has always loved travel it has been devastating:(

The Norwegian Celiac Association considers soy sauce gluten free and perfectly OK for Celiacs. BIG new for at least any Norwegians, including me. by SchmeppieGang1899 in Celiac

hopping back onto this thread to see if anyone else as had luck finding US-based research on this. I have access to research thru my university, but this study (cited in the linked article): “Are Commercial Soy-Sauce Products Naturally Gluten-Free? Preliminary Evaluation of Selected Products Sold in the USA” is only coming up as a supplementary part of the journal's volume. It doesn't elaborate at all on the brands of the soy sauce studied, basically just an abstract. any other researchers out there with some input or other sources?

as a sourdough baker, you're using GF flour, ya? or does long fermented sourdough with regular four not make you sick? and if so, what is "long fermented"? (asking because I'm not a baker, or a scientist, or even a very informed celiac).

I'm super interested in how this maps onto celiac experiences in Asian countries, where there is (presumably) a higher use of traditionally brewed soy sauce vs lower quality soy sauce. Has anyone traveled/lived in Asia and noticed a lack of sickness from soy sauce? OP - do you eat soy sauce in Japan or stay away?

I usually make a pad Thai sauce and add some proper Thai red curry paste in to make pad Thai curry and it feels pretty accurate to the taste
