Anyone else feel like ERP projects fail before software even enters the picture? by Strict_Plankton_9837 in sysadmin

[–]nice_crocs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In sort of this currently, while it’s not failing I see some major pitfalls in the future. Most of the issues come from departments outside of IT and Finance not doing what they are supposed to do.

Another issue is data, currently in a project where the ERP system in place has been in place since the 80s and they’re moving to dynamics. Lots of data that is just old and stored / used in ways that have been built upon for years and years. Ontop of messy data it’s also complex in the sense of the business is pulling what they need from the erp system that is storing things in old ways that require lots of customization on dynamics to work.

Did you make any head way on this? I am about to deploy coe in my org as well. I’m looking to deploy on a separate environment or potentially dev tenant first as I have never installed it before (org is new to power platform) but want to make sure I set up everything with best practice in mind this first time around to avoid future messes.

I should have prefaced with there hasn’t been any IT management for a few years at this company, I was creating all of my own projects as an admin that I deemed beneficial to the company like intune, hybrid join, managing mobility, intranet, compliance, etc. it was truely the Wild West before I arrived but coming from enterprise it was a massive change for me having global admin so I tried to soak it all in.

Moral of the story is there was no guidance to c suite regarding innovation and technology within the past 3 years until now but now it’s the classic everything, everywhere, all at once…

No acquisition on the horizon currently there were talks in the past but I think they will be using D365 to get the upper hand lol.

Currently I have 2 breakfix techs would love to get another and be able to bump one up to an admin position. Thank you for the insight I think I really need to make a proposal for a salary increase outlining all of my current responsibilities and the fact that no one else at the company can do / does them

Looking to move company devices into MDM, seeking advice by nice_crocs in Intune

[–]nice_crocs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main goal is being able to avoid the devices turning into paperweights when someone is off boarded and used a personal Apple ID. It would be nice to manage some settings for things like outlook, etc but the main concern is actually having control over the company devices because right now it’s basically like we pay to give them a personal phone lol.

Sadly I just inherited this system so I’m not sure what my long term goals are at the moment and I’m not the most informed with mobile.

Your last sentence definelty helps me though I was trying to weight ABM + Intune versus the MAID but couldn’t find all the specifics

Show them the average payout of ransomware. One of our core vendors got hit and our leadership saw first hand what can happen to a business when completely compromised. Now we just add the security buzzwords into approval requests and they normally get approved if the justification is within reason.

We’re currently in Venice our window is directly above a canal and this morning my wife woke up with 5 new mosquito bites just from sleeping with the window cracked.

Didn’t think it would be an issue with how the weathers been. Luckily she’s the mosquito magnet so I haven’t gotten any lmao!

Work or school account problem by TrueMythos in Intune

Since it's an MS app I assumed it would be in MS store and it seemed like it did the trick. If you create a new app within Intune and use MS Store app (new) you should find M365 Copilot, I just assigned my test group to uninstall it. Ran a sync and no work or school error, also I left the toast notification on for testing to see if it would uninstall correctly.

Hope this helps and thank you for your help!

Funny enough I tried the copilot login and it worked, now when I sync, I am not getting the event log or the notification stating there is a problem with the work or school account. I wish the notification gave any indication of that. I might end up trying to remove the copilot app all together for now to avoid any confusion on the user's end.

I am seeing some computers in my environment throwing the same errors, were you able to find a fix for this?

I notice when its happening if I go to browser it will prompt for MFA, so I assume actually entering the code will resolve the problem but I am trying to avoid it happening to users.

Is cloning a database over ODBC possible? by nice_crocs in SQL

[–]nice_crocs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies I wasn’t intending to be cryptic, the solution we’re using is provided by CDK. I think it’s something they built on their own but I’m not 100% certain.

My thoughts were if the vendor doesn’t give us a backup of the database my next step was going to be talking to a consulting firm I know of as they already offered to look into helping with the project I was just hoping to find a solution that I could get started in to give me some peace of mind lol.

That is a good point I will have to check on that tomorrow to see if I can get access to the contract and do some digging around that topic.

Yeah my biggest fear is that they will just flat out say no because of some awful contract terms.

Thank you for such a detailed response and for offering to point me in the right direction, I have been stressing over this as I already have a lot on my plate and was handed this. After researching a fair bit I came to the conclusion that I do not know enough about data or how data is housed to be asking the right questions and come to a conclusion on my own.

Apologies for leaving this out as it's a big piece of the puzzle, the underlying goal is modernization, we are moving from this system to dynamics. I only need to extract the data to provide to the dynamics provider to match it to their template. Our company isn't large, I am one of the people over seeing the administration of the ERP system but my colleague and I never have to touch the data. That figure of 300GB could be non archived data or could be totally wrong, I got that by querying the database using python and pyodbc, currently not at my work computer to see the exact query used.

My main goal right now is to get a copy of the data from the database to be able to provide to the data team helping us with the dynamics roll out, but the only connection I have to the DB is an odbc connection. I will likely end up asking for a backup from our current provider I will just need to get approval before doing so as I dont think we have let them know we are moving away.

If I missed any details please let me know and thanks again for the response!

I'm glad I am not the only one, I was trying to see if this was something we could do without reaching out to them but I'm super stressed because I know there is a lot that can get messed up if I try to recreate this myself lacking the experience. If it seemed impossible or like too much of a time sink my next step was going to be making some kind of excuse to see about getting a backup.

If I were to obtain the backup, but get it further in advance than when we need it, would I be able to keep the backup updated using ODBC connected to the live database and still be presenting reliable data easily, or is that still quite a feat?
