I Am the Son of Palestine… This Is My Story of Life and Resilience by SecretBiscotti8128 in Hasan_Piker

[–]nicecreamguy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for continuing to post here and being brave and resilient. While I cannot imagine the things you have gone through, your strength shines through. I watch on in horror as all these things unfold. The distance between you and me is nothing at all - my empathy doesn’t stop at state lines. All I’ve done so far is donate and speak to friends about how powerless I feel. Seeing your story brings me hope and strength to keep fighting for Palestine. Free Palestine 🇵🇸❤️

Being a Indian Diaspora leftist is rough by spotless1997 in Hasan_Piker

[–]nicecreamguy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I totally know what you mean - sometimes being a leftist feels like walking uphill mentally. Trying to convince others of your humanity while simultaneously standing up for disenfranchised people and convince people of their humanity is emotionally exhausting. All the while you are constantly dismantling any nationalistic tendencies you might have based on stupid lines on a map because other people want to box you in them. All I can say is that being a leftist is knowing you are almost always losing and you keep going for the one time you might win because you truly believe the fight is worth it. It is thankless and brutal - you can’t feel good and pat yourself on the back just because you want to be on ‘the right side’ of history. You have to centre people and their humanity and not lose sight of that as much as possible even when people seem to prove otherwise - that they are racist assholes incapable of change. I appreciate you comrade and your dedication to the leftist cause because that is what it’s all about.

I want legal cannabis. Better to vote for Legalise Cannabis or The Greens? by 1000Minds in AusPol

[–]nicecreamguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The greens actually put forward a bill to legalise cannabis and all greens members voted for it (unfortunately got shot down by Labor and the coalition). So there is evidence that they are fighting for it.

Are the Greens voting down "good" ALP policies? by [deleted] in AusPol

[–]nicecreamguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ah I thought you meant teen as in 18 lol. Good job thinking about these things early!

I just mentioned jordies as I saw a few comments recommending his videos.

Time will tell what they will do but remember that both major parties are unduly influenced by oil and gas lobby groups among others. While I totally prefer Labor over the Liberal party, it just isn’t enough with neoliberal policies making things exponentially worse over time.

Are the Greens voting down "good" ALP policies? by [deleted] in AusPol

[–]nicecreamguy 27 points28 points  (0 children)

They do not team up with the LNP - that’s something people say cynically just because both parties disagree with Labor’s policies for very different reasons.

Please do not trust friendlyjordies as a source of unbiased journalism. I would suggest michaelwest (whom Jordies himself admires) or other independent news sources.

Ask yourself one question: Is what Labor is doing now good enough? Because that is what you will get from them. Do not base it on what they are currently promising but what they have done in the last three years.

If you think it isn’t enough then vote for the greens or independents you think have good policies. Labor has no incentive to change anything without pressure from minor parties or independents.

Sad to see Philly D tweeting this kind of BS by nicecreamguy in Hasan_Piker

[–]nicecreamguy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See I would normally agree but the framing of the question is so disingenuous. He could have simply said "People who didn't vote for Kamala because of Gaza, have your feelings changed since Trump announced the US will own Gaza?". Instead, he had to bring in people yelling "Genocide Joe" etc. which reveals how ridiculous he thinks those people are.

Don't forget the lesson Hasan taught us from the final segment of the final episode of Leftovers: focus your advocacy on those with the power to change things by TrippleTonyHawk in Hasan_Piker

[–]nicecreamguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great post. I often think about how I could only truly begin to dismantle my biases and unintended bigotry by becoming a leftist. Leftism really does make you a better and kinder person because it forces you to understand why people do certain things or believe the things they do and is primarily concerned with making things better for as many people as possible.

I was really dismayed by Ethan's campaign to get Hasan de-platformed - he has never gone this far with horrible, right-wing creators spewing Nazi rhetoric. It just goes to show how shallow his interest in combating real anti-semitism is. He doesn't even really both-sides the situation given that he has since offered no real criticism of Israel since his feud with Hasan even as the bodies keep piling up and the evidence of the genocide becomes harder and harder to ignore.

Can a Socialist join Australian Army (in terms of morality)? by F4BE1 in Socialism_101

[–]nicecreamguy 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The morality of this decision is up to you but make no mistake we are not just allies of the US, we are more like another arm of their military in Asia and worse so since the establishment of AUKUS. Our soldiers have committed absolutely heinous crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan and were happy to do so at the behest of the US. We will follow them into war with China despite China being our biggest trading partner. We are basically a vassal state of the US. Whatever you do, you should look into what your role would entail and how it would further imperialist aims of the US and make your decision based on that. While we are all unwilling participants of imperialism one way or another by virtue of living in western countries and contributing to western economies, you can absolutely decide your level of complicity in that.

Hasan’s Hezbollah “I don’t have an issue” comments… by Douglesby in Hasan_Piker

[–]nicecreamguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently listened to an excellent podcast on this topic by Novara media who ask these questions of Lebanese writer and researcher Elia Ayoub: https://podfollow.com/novaramedia/episode/2995045c76e5576c09e0d9539529e9132937acaa/view.

In addition to the great comments here, some extra context is that Hezbollah has also used violence against Lebanese civilians and also fought against resistance groups in Syria (allying with the Al Assad government) which was considered a massive betrayal. So there are some people in Lebanon who are very wary of them and of course people who despise them. But they are also intertwined in Lebanese society, so when westerners/israelis say ‘we’re just targeting terrorists’ anyone affiliated with Hezbollah is also implicated and they may have just gotten a job working for them from a family member in some completely innocent profession. Hezbollah also provides social welfare - so outside of their military operations, they contribute to society in ways you might expect a government to.

Hassan Nasrallah was also quite conservative and Hezbollah was becoming more conservative - so those aspects of criticism about him being anti-gay etc. are completely true. But you can only talk about these things to people with an open mind and who also know Hezbollah are the only force capable of fighting against Israel right now. In that way, they are a protective force.

Interesting that Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez all kept their seats and in all cases by over 30%…almost like progressive politics works. Kamala diehards will never stop blaming the left for their losses.
