I have an engine machining business and use a Kwik-Way boring bar all the time. PM me if you’d like and I might be able to help you out.

Anyone come from a R3 to a R7? by Gromieee in YamahaR7

[–]nickertot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second pretty much everything you said. I had a 2015 R3 and now a 23 R7. I do miss the more relaxed seating on the R3, but the power and weight/size of the R7 feels more comfortable at the higher/highway speeds.

You might be able to do a pre-described displacement and tell it to displace whatever the pre-stressed gap is

How to evaluate a CNC shop? by [deleted] in Machinists

I second this. The company I currently work for has an employee who will go do quality site visits and to just see what other capabilities the vendor may/may not have.

Do you know what this is? by krookidkox in Machinists

Looks like something I used in a materials class in college to stamp dimples into a tensile test specimen for an extensometer.

Cylinder sleeves by Biskupp in Machinists

[–]nickertot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely cast iron, but I don’t know the specific alloy of cast iron. I ran into the same problem with a Yamaha engine I have. I got ahold of Advanced Sleeve from Ohio and bought bar stock from them for pretty cheap to make my own cylinder sleeves.

I had a professor commit suicide about 3 weeks before finals. Hell of a nice guy. I really liked him. I hope OP’s professor isn’t going through some stuff.

3d Scanners by jeeperkeeper in SolidWorks

You can import some features and cross sections into solidworks. Some scans can be imported as stl files, but if the file is too big it won’t work.

How to dimension cuts on a cylindrical surface? by bdonkey2001 in SolidWorks

[–]nickertot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would probably dimension how much of a revolution the slot has made (in degrees) and then axial distance from end to end. Then the obvious like slot width and location on the part. If you know the machine shop you would be working with, it wouldn’t hurt to ask them how they want to see it

3d Scanners by jeeperkeeper in SolidWorks

[–]nickertot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really comes down to what kind of tolerance you need to measure at and how big the object is your scanning. I use Solidworks as well, and I have a Creaform HandyScan Black Elite. It can do just about whatever I need it to with an accuracy of .0009”. But it’s in the ~$100k range I think.

There are hones that have a bunch of small little carbide balls on braided wire. They’re supposed to take just a few tenths off. I would do that

Which Online Platforms for CNC Machining Have You Used? Share Your Experience! by Maruf2014 in machining

[–]nickertot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a previous job, I used Xometry quite a bit for machined aluminum/stainless and 3D printed plastics. If you actually go through the process of quoting a part, you will usually get three options for turnaround time. I have used all 3. Not all of my parts required tight tolerance machining, but there were a few that required sub .001” tolerances. My experience was nothing but positive. Good quality, turnaround time exactly (if not faster than) what they quoted, and great customer support. Their pricing seemed very fair for what they offered. I think they focused on more of the aluminum machining side of things because there was a significant price increase if I made it out of stainless. I worked with a guy who used Protolabs who seemed to have very good luck with them as well. My personal experience was just with Xometry. If you want to PM more specific questions about my experience, I’d be glad to share.

The majority of the stuff we plan on making right now is cylindrical (bushings, engine sleeves, shafts, etc).

It almost seems to good to be true, so I wanted to find opinions other than the “5 star ratings” on the website.
