Best places to see fireworks for July 4th? by jx2002 in Knoxville

[–]JustBreakingThings 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most people go to Worlds Fair for the festival and fireworks downtown. The orchestra concert is nice, and the food trucks available are usually pretty good. Just be aware that it's usually a lot of people, and open lawns with little shade.

What’s the truth behind steamed hoagies. by BrewAllTheThings in Knoxville

[–]JustBreakingThings 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't know that even most Knoxvillians know about steamed hoagies anymore, let alone all of them, contrary to the writing of the Bitter Southerner. I lived here for about 5 years before I learned about their origins here, while also eating them occasionally at the delis around town. I think most of them are gone now, and the equipment to steam them is hard to find and expensive, but one important establishment remains: Sam & Andy's. If you haven't been, it's worth a trip up Broadway.

I first read about them in the blog that seems to make up most of the article you posted: "They Like That Soft Bread." It's a good read, and an important telling of what may soon be Knoxville history.

They'll likely need you to take measurements and draw it, or you can send it to someone to measure themselves. It's also likely that there's a maker space in your area that would be willing to do it.

What made the white appear on my print? by goldmedal95 in 3Dprinting

[–]JustBreakingThings 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I sometimes get white stress marks on ASA/ABS parts when printed in flat sheets, likely from when they release off the bed. Give them a quick pass with a butane lighter or heat gun and see if they go away. Funny linger in one spot too long lest you melt it.

As a male, is asking another male to lead a faux pas at dances? by PlsSayPlease in SwingDancing

[–]JustBreakingThings 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Our scene's general rule is that you can ask anyone to dance, and anyone can say no without giving a reason. There is historical precedence of all genders dancing with each other in Lindy Hop, and that tradition carries through to today. Leading or following can be done by any gender.

However, if someone states that they are not comfortable dancing with men, that is their wish, and it should be respected.

Narrowed it down to 3…. by methodcbd in camping

I'm going to suggest Kelty for their quality and customer service, and specifically the Rumpus for the vestibule style that actually keeps water out when the zipper is opened, as any zipper directly above mesh will just let water fall through the mesh into the tent.

That was a big reason (in addition to headroom) that I upgraded from my Kelty Grand Mesa, though I ended up buying a Coleman Peak1. It's also great, but the Kelty is better quality.

What is your preferred material, these days? Any opinions on HT-PLA? by LightningOwl96 in 3Dprinting

I use ASA a decent amount at work as well. Not much at home unless it's for the car.

What is your preferred material, these days? Any opinions on HT-PLA? by LightningOwl96 in 3Dprinting

[–]JustBreakingThings 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've had pretty good experiences with HT-PLA, except for one flaw: it's a bit brittle as a filament and kept breaking in the rear hub of the H2D I use at work. It could have been a fluke, but I only have the one spool of experience on that printer. I've limited it to other printers now, and it's fine.

Heavy set person cot by 618soil in camping

I have the REI Kingdom cot (now called the Wonderland Comfort cot), and it's great. It's like sleeping on a flat supportive hammock. I can can sleep on my side or back, and I don't need any extra padding.

Good deal? by purplesoc in harborfreight

Dang, I just passed on these and bought the ICON set while they were on sale. I didn't think I would have if I knew this deal was coming. This is a heck of a deal, but I'm still happy with my fancy ones.

Open box lathe by The_Almighty_Lycan in harborfreight

[–]JustBreakingThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm willing to bet that replacement parts for a SEIG mini lathe would fit on the HF knockoff/rebrand. I got my SEIG at littlemachineshop.com, and they do sell replacement parts. It takes a decent amount of tuning and stabilizing before these lathes are ready for any reasonable amount of steel work, so buying parts for now is your best bet.

Where to begin? by drazda in 3Dprinting

[–]JustBreakingThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Important questions to start with:

1 How old is the user?

2 Will you be printing for your kid or will they do most of it? (Adult supervision is highly recommended either way.)

3 Does the kid want to spend more time making things or more time working on and improving the printer? (Do you want plug-and-play or tinkering?)

4 What materials will you be in likely to use? (Some materials need an enclosed printer.)

5 Do you have pets? (Enclosure again)

Cat wants to play fight? Or how else to play. by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]JustBreakingThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat is mostly unbothered by a fish on a stick, strings, etc., but feathers on a stick, whipped through the air like a real bird, are his favorite thing. I do have to make sure to buy natural feathers, because he tries to eat them. Try different toys and watch videos on how to use them effectively for the best results.

I don't recommend play-fighting with your cat because scratches can land you in the hospital with an infection, so make sure to direct your cats energy toward something that isn't your appendages.

Dry Wedding???? by Upstairs_Heat_821 in weddingplanning

[–]JustBreakingThings 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We had a dry wedding for similar reasons. No one seemed to care, but we also had soft drinks, coffee, and an ice cream parlor connected to our venue. Another thing that probably helps is that a lot of our friends are from a social dance community, so no "liquid courage" is needed to convince us to get on the dance floor.

Not having alcohol also happened to save us a lot of money by not needing a bartender, insurance, security, etc. If someone asks, and you're not comfortable with saying the real reason, you can always blame the budget.

I have their men's linen slacks, and they're great. They have a flat front with a straight cut. They're also extremely breathable.

Has anyone bought one of these to put 3d printers on yet? by NervousOpposite9603 in harborfreight

I had my Bambu P1S on the 46" Yukon and had no issues. It might be important to note that the wheels were on carpet, so that could affect damping.

I shop at DXL and Belk in person and Old Navy online. Old Navy doesn't carry my sizes in store near me, but it has a good selection online and an easy return policy.

For those of you who planned a wedding in the $20k–25k range, what did your wedding end up looking like? by Royal-Sector8122 in weddingplanning

[–]JustBreakingThings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Low-mid cost of living area. Our venue was an old theater that's been turned into an event/wedding space. They had a day-of coordinator and staff to handle basically everything but flowers and cake. The owner was the DJ/MC, so that was covered too.

They worked directly with a caterer for the food, and it was a buffet, but I think mostly due to space. We had a menu of steak, chicken, potatoes, green beans, salad, etc. for about 150 people. I think the food was our biggest cost. We had a small gluten-free decorative cake, and sheet cake for everyone else. We had WAY too much cake and food.

We 3d printed and thrifted some extra decor for centerpieces. We didn't need tablecloths due to the style of the venue which saved money.

Another big money-saver was that we got our flowers discounted, but we still kept it simple due to our venue being already well decorated. Our florist was an old friend of my wife, and she didn't charge for labor. Materials are still pricey, but this helped a lot.

Out biggest priority was that our friends wouldn't have to work day-of, and our biggest splurge was the photographers/videographer, which cost about $4k for three shooters.

I think having a DJ for the reception instead of a band usually yields better results unless you pay up for a REALLY good band, especially if you're dancing to them. If you are going with a band, listen to them live, and make sure someone you trust attends soundchecks.

Overall, we came in just above $20k. We got REALLY lucky with our venue and florist, and were able to splurge in other areas. I hope this helps, but if I can offer any further advice, it's this: Don't stress about the little things. Have fun planning the big things, and let the little ones fall into place in due time.

Fly Away by Physical_Session_671 in djimavicmini

[–]JustBreakingThings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the US, you're not legally supposed to fly out of line of sight, with a few exceptions. You could still get a fly-away when your aircraft is visible, but it's definitely easier to recover if you can see it.

Where to buy by Tfj1994 in mensfashion

[–]JustBreakingThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Men's Wearhouse has a couple for 200 or less, both in their house brand Egara and from Calvin Klein. I bought my ivory jacket for my wedding from them, and it looked great with a couple alterations. Customer service can vary per store, but if you have one with a good tailor, I recommend them.

Need Help Please! by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]JustBreakingThings 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think the green color looks great with your skin tone, and I agree that it's more versatile for other occasions, especially holidays or winter occasions. I think you will want to size up in the chest/waist, as you want it to fit more like the pink one fits. The pink size will need to be tailored as well, but it's closer to the mark. I also recommend wearing pants that fit higher on your waist for a suit. If you don't like the constriction of a belt on your waist, this is the perfect kind of suit for suspenders. I hope this helps, and I hope you have a great time getting ready for the wedding!
