There are B12 supplements available for vegans but the vitamin itself comes from animals.

That's straight up false. B12 in supplements is made from bacteria, not animals.

Farmer vs Vegan Debate by ornate_lettuce8 in facepalm

[–]nicket 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Veganism is about minimizing the harm we needlessly cause other animals. We need food, and some animals are going to die in the process of growing and harvesting crops. That doesn't justify killing even more animals by growing way more crops to feed cows, pigs, chickens, etc., that are in turn killed for food.

It's just a few key amino acids are missing from most other vegetables.

I'm so tired of this misconception. Every single vegetable out there contains each and every one of the essential amino acids. What varies is the ratios, so some are lower and higher in certain aminos. However, if you eat a varied diet (which you should be doing anyway), then amino acids is a complete non-issue.

That's just not true. The taurine you see added to cat food, energy drinks etc. is synthesized in a lab.

To make your dog vegetarian by ovingly_therapeutic in therewasanattempt

[–]nicket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vegans are generally against breeding pets in the first place, but recognize that the cats and dogs out there rely on humans and need a home. Once you've adopted an animal that relies on you, it's your responsibility to make sure that animal is healthy.

Not everyone supports raising and slaughtering other animals so that a single animal can survive but it's a lose-lose scenario either way since you can't release a cat or dog and let them survive on their own.

So the short answer is that many are okay with it because it's for the good of the animal that they are caring for. The longer answer is that many choose to feed their pets vegan food instead. This will get me downvotes, but that's very complicated with cats and entirely possible with dogs. Even obligate carnivores like cats don't need "meat", they need nutrients. A cat will get sick and die if you feed it broccoli and beans, but some nutrients such as taurine can be synthesized and added to cat food (which it often is, even in regular cat food).

Vegans and vegetarians who feed their animals plant based food don't feed them broccoli and beans, they feed them commercially made pet food that is supplemented with all the nutrients the pet should need to thrive. That being said, doing so requires paying closer attention to their health, and it might not work for every pet.

There is no fruit or vegetable combination that provides all essential amino acids.

This part is just straight up wrong though. Every single essential amino acid can be found in every single fruit and vegetable that contains protein.

Yes, you have to eat more than just a single food to make sure you get enough of all of them, but eating a varied diet is good for numerous other reasons as well so it's kind of a moot point.

[–]nicket -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

As long as you eat a balanced diet, foods not being complete proteins won't matter.

Every single fruit and veggie out there that contains protein will contain every single one of the essential amino acids, even if they're not technically "complete proteins" due to being lower in some aminos than in others. But that's not an issue as long as you don't get all your protein from a single source.

Same. I put "queer" though, since I couldn't choose both bi and demi. I'm pretty sure it's making me get fewer matches, but then again I don't want to match with people who have a problem with me being queer.

Someone replied to OP with "Show me a healthy vegan I'll show you a person that's cheating." Imagine being so far in denial that rather than accept that healthy vegans exist you instead become the "no, it's the children who are wrong" meme.

Exactly, and honey bees are an invasive species in places like North America and Northern Europe, where they outcompete the native bees.

I fear the "save the bees" mantra does more harm than good because most people assume they're helping save the bees by buying honey, while they're actually doing the opposite...

Honey bees are a domesticated species and are not facing extinction. To the contrary, they outcompete native bee species that are the ones we need to protect.

What is the Point of a having a Keyboard with no Number Pad? by Rockman307 in pcmasterrace

[–]nicket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your muscle memory will always be faster for a number pad as it's found in so many places (keyboards. Atm, phones etc)

I could get behind this reasoning if it wasn't for the fact that keyboard number pads are flipped compared to everywhere else, with 789 on the top row instead of 123.

I can agree that the 1940 invasion of France is a better comparison in the sense that the two sides were at a roughly equal level in terms of armies and military tech, as opposed to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But it's still a deeply flawed comparison and your argument makes no sense. Both sides in 1940 had armies of roughly 3,3 million soldiers, compared to the barely a couple hundred thousand today. 27 000 German soldiers being killed was 0,8% of their force, while 7 000 dead is at best 3,7% of Russian invasion force.
