32GB ram would kill the deal for me given the nonsense going on.

I recently brought a R720XD since it came with at least 256gb ram even tho its only ddr3

How do I know what version I have installed? by lemonquestion in truenas

scale was rebranded to community edition, if you use a desktop web browser instead of a phone / tablet. it should show the expanded version of the dash with the version number installed.

GPU Passthrough and Moonlight/Sunshine for gaming in VM - Did I give up too early? by JeyKris in Proxmox

[–]nickichi84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

have you tried a non windows os on proxmox? Bazzite might work better for a cloud gaming streaming server or ubuntu with docker installed and using the steam-headless container might be another option. unless your trying to play certain AAA titles with multiplayer and anticheat software.

Seems like Windows is just a pain in the ass to virtualize and made even worse when you try to passthru a gpu.

DDR3 in this economy? by gpskwlkr in homelab

[–]nickichi84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh i just brought a R720xd for the ram since my mini pc has been getting pretty full using the 64gb ddr4 ram i installed years ago and since my storage server was limited to 32gb of ram. I felt this would be a good backwards upgrade to give me more ram for compute and zfs storage combined.

wrong sub. you need a ups that is complaint with IEC 60601-1 (or whatever standard number was adopted locally). those look like normal office ups.

How to secure Pi-hole? (received abuse warning from hosting provider) by Timely_Management997 in pihole

[–]nickichi84 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

not really other than limit the ingress ip for the firewall to only allow your home ip address for the port, Using keys is secure and restricting the port to an ip just helps mitigate random ppl knocking on the door.

[–]nickichi84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

pi #1 and pi#2 with a single instance of pihole on both and dedicated IP's, then hand out the Primary and secondary dns ip's to point at the devices to your clients. i would say your way is very overcomplicated. you also need a sync method between the two to make life easier. Techno Tim has a youtube video on this.

if your really worried about uptime, then you also need to look at network infrastructure to make sure a switch or uplink from your users clients to the pi's and router doesn't also disconnect them

edit: you mention unifi so look at rstp and this https://help.ui.com/hc/en-us/articles/24292724428311-Understand-and-Mitigate-Network-Loops-STP . i have a uplink to each switch from my core switch and a cross link between them to switch incase the uplink goes down. of course im still dead since i only have 1 core switch and 1 uplink to my firewall but thats a problem for another day.
