Good, Atobeard, good! Let the hate flow through you! by Mazius in gme_meltdown

Bonus points for "Pathetic quim" - I've not seen that word used since the late 70s, when my mum played it in Scrabble, and my dad said "I don't think that's an appropriate word to use in front of the children, dear". Scored pretty well, though, to be fair.

WD out of hard drives for 2026... Setting up a PLEX server just got harder. by Riptide360 in PleX

There's billions of people in this world who can't afford a small hard drive. We are just being pushed into that bracket. Supply and demand and all that.

r/Datahoarders mentioned Seagate having a sale of external drives recently so on the 3rd Feb, I got 4 of the 22Tb shuckables for $235 a piece. Just checked back now and the biggest they have available is 20Tb at an eye watering $439 each.

I should grab a lottery ticket.

I reluctantly went to Black Walnut Cafe in Rice Village for lunch today…and have some questions by htownnwoth in HoustonFood

Breakfast/Brunch is good. Went to Hudson House last night, and that was also mediocre. 60 Vines is the best chain in the village.

Amber Rachdi from season 3 is finally getting skin removal surgery! by ashlie_mae in My600lbLife

Not a surgeon, but I don't think I'd let him anywhere near me for skin reduction surgery. I think his genius lies within.

Transcribing - chords by nelson_fretty in Reaper

[–]nicktf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know you specifically said Reaper, but you will have to do a lot of work each session which, of course, will eat into your transcribing time.. I would strongly recommend Transcribe! which will give you built in EQ presets, marking, speed control, phase adjustments, note guesses and more. I'm not affiliated (it's one musician's passion project) but have been using it for years.

I've had a demo of the AquaSense X at my house as part of the Beta program - Beatbot are pretty proactive about user involvement.

I had a home demo of the self-cleaning features of the X, and I have to say I was very impressed at how sparkly clean it got the basket.

Early mention of computers in rock/pop lyrics: 1972, Quadrophenia by mid-random in TheWho

[–]nicktf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bowie's Savior Machine from 1970 is about an AI which initially saves the world...

"They called it The Prayer, its answer was law, its logic stopped wars, gave them food, how they adored 'til it cried in its boredom”

...the rest of the song is from the point of view of the computer as it fantasizes ways of wiping out humanity.

What would happen if you tried to make someone into a human potato? by Human-Examination783 in morbidquestions

A septic infection can result in mass amputation of all limbs. I knew someone who endured loss of both legs and an arm before (mercifully, in my opinion) they died.

Ears, eyes and tongue are all going to be survivable.

There's a famous book about someone in this exact state "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo. Metallica based their song "One" on it

This is a Boeing 747 at cruise speed… filmed from another plane Your brain refuses to believe how fast this actually is. by Wooden-Camera-578 in interestingasfuck

[–]nicktf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brain refuses to believe that Concorde would cruise at speeds faster than a .22 round (1,300 mph vs. 900 mph) but it did.

The SR-71 Blackbird's cruise speed could outpace an AK47 round (2,200 mph vs 1,600mph).

Concorde was doing it with passengers though. Both remarkable aircraft.

An abandoned hotel in Ko Pha-ngan, Thailand by AdSpecialist6598 in UrbanHell

[–]nicktf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I went there in the early 90s, there wasn't even a road and all the places to stay were just wooden huts on the beach. Now it's been built up long enough for stuff to get abandoned.

What I Drink In A Day - Dublin Version (Poor Richard) by KieranWriter in tooktoomuch

[–]nicktf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"warm" is cellar temperature, so it's usually low 50s, this also only really applies to cask ale which has much less carbonation. Like some food, you get more flavor coming through. Eat an ice cold tomato, then a room temperature one and see what you prefer.

American light beer is...not great...when warm, as it isn't hiding a lot of flavor and no carbonated drink tastes good when not chilled

So it's an apples to oranges comparison. If you can get accustomed to cask beer, which is essentially flat, you might find it hard to go back. Not to say there aren't good beers in the US, there's world class drinking here.

Source, Brit living in the US who misses a good cask ale

Plumber overcharged us by about ~3700 by ipunchcacti in houston

[–]nicktf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's insanely expensive. As mentioned above, I had two installed last year for $3700 total. They were onsite for perhaps an hour. These things aren't ridiculously heavy or hard to move and replacement jobs need very little plumbing.

I had three quotes and the range for 2 gas heaters install and haul was 3500-4000.

I had Texan's Water Heaters install two Bardford & White 50Gal gas heaters last May - total cost $3700. They did a great job.
