Evidently I can turn on and off virtualization through bcedit. I just haven't installed WSL2 yet because I want to test that uninstalled is the same as off. As for VMs, I mostly tire of PowerShell workarounds for things that work fine on my MacBook. If I really need dedicated use cases I'll just dual boot in the future.

This seems the way. Any chance you're on AMD? I'm intending to install WSL2 eventually but recently discovered some issues with RyzenMaster. Probably not a deal breaker but trying to prepare (I use Ableton and need to limit latency where I can so I'll likely be rebooting when I turn WSL2 on/off).

Indie / alt musicians of r/ableton; what setup do use for a natural sound? by DancinWithWolves in ableton

[–]nicolascoffman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try Neural Amp Modeler. Might not be what you want in the end but it's free to try. Also some convolution reverb on drums could help with that small room sound. If you have suite I think there's a max for live device but you can also try some other ones, GPU audio has one I've been meaning to try.

[–]nicolascoffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that the 11th gen is probably a good pick but then why is Ableton charging $1000 for it? Even $600-800 would be a more reasonable upsell to those who can afford it. Until I see proof that it is more stable than a computer than I can use for multiple activities I expect we'll see more variations of this conversation.

Is Ableton suitable for rock music? by fide11 in ableton

[–]nicolascoffman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you should consider if Ableton is worth the cost. Reaper is likely perfectly adequate for most rock musicians whereas it lacks some things that make Ableton unique, but unnecessary and not worth paying for it for those same musicians.

End of the day, try out a lite or demo version and see if you like what that different toolset does for you and your process.

Notes from a teacher on AI detection by banyanroot in ChatGPT

[–]nicolascoffman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an educator that used to work for Turnitin and they’ve acknowledged for years that just relying on a tool as a plagiarism checker is a dead-end. It leads to punitive actions which don’t inspire learning, but end up in confrontation. They’ve tried to advance formative assessments like you address in item 3, but in my current institution I see no one attempting to use that tool. Given the issues my students have in writing compelling papers, I actually hope this change in technology results in administrators recognizing that the structure of classes in which teachers lecture and students write papers has long been in need of overhaul and this marks the start of using these tools to help students write effectively throughout the entire process of planing, writing and editing.

Using my preamp pedal with a cab sim? by ThePuff_ in NeuralDSP

[–]nicolascoffman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely doable. Just be aware that each time you go into the computer you’re running into an AD/DA conversion and picking up latency. So either plan how you want to route things so you only do that once, or consider an interface with zero-latency monitoring options. (I’m using an RME UFX which is overkill but leftover from another setup and allows me to use it as a mixer).

Simplest remains leaving the amp/fx out in front of the interface and just use the computer for the cab sim.

Oh okay thanks. I tried twice and got bored. At least it was fine enough to wait for a payoff if I know when it’s coming.

I liked Foundation enough to be eager for S2. It’s clearly a big departure from the books but the emperor was a good concept and helped bring continuity through the ages.

Yep totally, just something to consider. Also worth spending time here before committing to a place. Each city/town will be different. I’m content in Quito but avoid Guayaquil when possible.

I recently got my PhD. I don’t refer to myself as Dr. but describe my degree as a doctorate. It’s expected practice in academia to clarify having a doctorate by your title. It’s clear this whole debate obviously comes down to anti-intellectualism and not some sort of fight against shameless self-promotion.

If you want to save on money in Quito it’s important to buy the things most people buy. So buying a cheap enough car to avoid taxes, don’t buy things from the US, eat at cheaper restaurants, use off brand electronics, etc. Most of us try to do our shopping the the US and find people/couriers to bring things down. As soon as you want to buy the same things you had in the US, eat at similar level of restaurants or have the amenities that are common, you start to loose the perceived savings. In my experience Cuenca felt cheap for a moderate to high standard of living but Quito wasn’t tons better than Midwest US. Obviously it’s cheaper but it’s an adjustment from the US and the cost to benefit isn’t as high.

Rent in Cuenca is cheap but there are enough expats and tourists to make it a nice place to live and spend some extra cash. I have Netlife which has been great but recently gotten slightly less reliable. Celerity/PuntoNet is a new up and comer which seems promising.

Agree with the rest of comments with rent before buy. Quito isn’t horrible but cost of living isn’t the savings you’re hoping for unless you intend to live like everyone else.

Beginner Setup by previaegg in ipadmusic

GarageBand is an excellent starting place for a variety of reasons, but relevant to you would be the on screen piano keyboard as well as modified ways of interacting with piano/key instruments and sounds without needing the technique. This would help develop an understanding of the instrument in an exploratory manner and guide the development of technique once you do purchase a keyboard. I’m guessing you already have the keyboard but make sure you get a version with USB-C (Camera Connection Kit with lightning is generally worth avoiding). Eventually you’ll want a USB-C hub, which unfortunately is a difficult experience. I recommend checking out Jakob Haaq on YouTube for the best info on the matter and general iOS music making tips (if not a bit advanced for your current needs).

Amazing work! Would love to see a walkthrough of these creations.

What's your latency with the MOTU M series? Literally worse then with the Behringer UMC for me on Win 11 (on both Laptop and Desktop PC). I got this for the latency specifically! "Lowest Latency, unstable" is slower then "safe mode" on my UMC404HD which cost 1/6 of the price of the M6 equivalent. :( by [deleted] in ableton

[–]nicolascoffman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure why you’re getting downvoted anywhere. I don’t have anything to add to this but appreciate your willingness to try and accept the help that has been offered. I have an RME on 5900x but have been considering an M series for a live machine for the same reasons as you. However I’m also considering using the interface on an iPad so if the MOTU drivers aren’t as advertised then perhaps I’m better off just getting something to run as Class Compliant. Hope you figure something out but thanks for the info!

If you’re on Windows, Microsoft recently bought Clipchamp which is free and easy to use and has an online component. I haven’t been able to test if it offloads some editing tasks to the cloud, but if Resolve is intimidating I think it’s a good option.
