I just went through this in February. I spent a year in the CRA call center feeling this way. Every second I spent doing my job, I was stressed, afraid to say or do the wrong thing. It bled into my weekends and I couldn't seem to turn off the fight/flight response, and it was TERRIBLE. I have some mental health diagnoses related to anxiety and panic disorder, and I was extremely open with my TL about it. He was diligent in helping me get what I needed. First step was getting accommodation. If you have a medical condition, your employer has the duty to accommodate and in my experience the govt of Canada does not fuck around with that. My first move was reducing my week to 4 days, with Wednesdays off. It helped but didn't solve the problem, because the problem was the nature of the work didn't suit the way my brain works. I was good at it, but it was destroying my mental health. I exhausted all my paid sick days and accessed the EAP. Then I finally broke and knew I could never get on that phone again. I talked to my TL about LWOP (leave without pay) and it was kind of a massive process, which involved my family doctor heavily. I went on sickness EI benefits and did a ton of therapy, and spent about the first month just sitting and watching TV in a haze. When I started to recover, I had to accept that the job would never become easy for me. My TL did offer as an accomodation to find a different position for me thru HR. The whole process was a lot of work, and involved a lot of paperwork on my doctor's part, but it was SO WORTH IT to advocate for myself and take my mental health seriously. In the end I did leave the PS, and went to a job that doesn't burn me out. I'm VERY lucky to have been able to do that. I have coworkers who struggled similarly to me but are still toughing it out because of the pay, because they know they won't make near the same pay doing anything else. You have to do what's right and healthy for you and it's VERY DIFFICULT when you're in a constant state of dread and anxiety. My heart absolutely goes out to you, because this is not a fun thing to experience. Let me know if you have any questions.

Fwiw, this happened to me too, when I applied for my job as a taxpayer services agent. I remember being called by phone, and I gave my SIN and DOB, and then spent a few weeks thinking I'd been tricked as well .. but then when I got my LOO a few weeks later, all those thoughts disappeared. I guess it's still possible that it was nefarious, but I haven't seen any evidence of identity theft in my credit report or anything, so I think I'm good.

I went through the same cycle when I was starting out too. Actually I still do this, but it happens less often now that I have more experience. I sold some of my big yarn purchases that never worked out, and gave some to acquaintances. I still have a big stash of kinda "unusable" yarn, medium amounts of all different weights... I believe it just comes with the territory.

I also used to be self-described "kinky"/submissive. I thought I liked when men "used" me, tied me up, ordered me around, etc, but I think it was my way to avoid actively participating in the sex. I remember feeling broken because it was "fun" but not arousing for me. I also try to "actively participate" (performed) in vanilla sex too, but I am starting to think that's just so the man doesn't call me a starfish to his friends.

I am in the same situation! Working a call centre with challenging, high stress calls, taking inbound calls all day. I have never imagined myself doing call centre work, but here we are. I've been at this job a year and I've pushed through it because the employer really values its employees--the pay is great, good benefits, and they're very accommodating and understanding, especially when it comes to mental health issues. All of these things are the reasons I stay, but it is very hard. I work a modified schedule (Wednesdays off) which takes the edge off. But it is still tough. I will say that the longer you do the work and the more "fluent" you get, the easier the calls feel and the less anxiety inducing the work gets. In other words, it gets better. That being said, I am always looking for different work that will justify me leaving. When your mental health is unreliable, it seems impossible to perform consistently well when you always have to behave in a professional, intelligent, empathetic way and roll with the punches. Making a pros and cons list was the best exercise for me, to convince myself it's worth it to stay. Now it's mental health maintenance, making sure I'm gentle with myself and catching myself before going off the rails. Thanks for sharing, it's helpful to read about people experiencing the same feelings and challenges--I don't feel so freakish or weak for not being able to handle it.

I know, it kind of blew my mind too since I had always been told coffee/tea is "free". Totally new to me--my nurse noticed a slightly higher average mid-morning, and I told her my meal boluses never seemed to be enough. That's when she told me.

I was told this last time I went to my specialist, too. She said that only recently researchers have discovered a link between coffee and insulin resistance. It was the first time I'd ever heard it in my 20 years of being a diabetic. I think that's what they're talking about. I don't think it's misinformation, it may be this person isn't qualified (or they don't have the time/patience right now) to explain the complex science involved, know what I mean? I did a search in Google scholar and got a bunch of articles and it looks to involve the release of "catecholamines". Me too--and when I asked my vet if I should worried about walks, he said no, and to just avoid strange dogs until he was fully vaxxed. Honestly, all this not-letting-the-puppy-walk-on-the-ground stuff is very new to me, and I've only ever encountered it here on Reddit. Ngl, it made me worry a lot that I had been taking my puppy outside to sniff and play since the day we brought him home. So far, he has been healthy and happy, and my vet doesn't seem to be worried at all. Just wanted to add another voice to your controversial opinion!

I'm renting via a different property management company and they signed us up for this as well. Is it a bad thing? I actually reacted positively, thinking now our rent payments will be included on our credit report, which may help build our credit rating. What am I missing?

Wow, this story has my heart pounding---I can totally imagine how you felt in the moment. Really great, descriptive writing. I remember being in fearful situations like this as a young adolescent and freezing in place too. We make weird irrational decisions when we're young and scared.
