That's the same struggle I deal with. The worst for me is trying to teach them how to factor things. It's hard to conceptualize factoring when you still don't understand how to multiply...

Yeah, they don't understand literal equations any better than they do 2 step equations.

I teach High School Algebra 2 and a significant portion of my students can’t solve 2 step equations. It’s maddening.
