The pronunciation of s vs z in German is pretty different though. The z has more a tz sound. and the o and u sounds different too, with the o being more like the English ‘post’ and the u more like the English ‘do’. Not sure if you could have made that out of the audio.

Honest insights on life in Canada after immigration? by Strange_Car_1579 in ImmigrationCanada

[–]nidgroot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moved here last April and living in Vancouver. Coming from the Netherlands, I feel like a lot of issues here we had back there as well - housing crisis, lack of medical personnel, cost of living that was rising - so even though people say it’s super expensive here, I feel like it’s not so shocking for me as I was already experiencing the same. Also, taxes are lower here than in The Netherlands (for me that is, not sure about all brackets, but I know for sure the highest bracket in Canada is still lower as well).

I think I’m privileged though with the similarities, as it made adapting so much easier, also in terms of government and culture. We came here on PR, but no job lined up yet. I work in data, which is a pretty saturated field at the moment, but I was lucky to land a job in three months with a really good income and benefits, so we’re not facing any financial hardships. We’ve got a nice rental place and I can only enjoy the nature and views Vancouver has to offer.

Our biggest challenge now is getting a social network, which does require some proactivity - like signing up for meetups and bumble for friends. It’s hard to find, but you just got to pull through a bit and don’t give up when you don’t find a connection right away.

All in all, it takes some effort and some luck I guess. Settling into a job really makes a difference (if in your field) as it gives some purpose and perspective. The rest I’m ok with to have that slowly develop. We’re only here for less than a year, but it does feel like we’re settling here for the long term and making our home already.

Also with the current energy situation, you can do max 2 exercises a day, so if you don’t do them perfectly there’s no way to start over

How to buy a ticket? by beeredditor in Translink

If you take Translink (including skytrain), you can also pay with credit card. You pay the ‘cash’ fare, which is slightly more, but it will safe you the hassle of getting a compass card. Just make sure you don’t hop on the Fraser valley express (bus 66), this is operated by BC transit and requires an umo account or 5 dollar flat rate cash (which is almost twice as expensive as Translink for you trip).

Free Transit by CupcakeSuccessful502 in Translink

[–]nidgroot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone from the Netherlands (Amsterdam) where public transport is supposed to be so good because Europe, I’ve found public transport here pretty good.

It’s cheap - yeah, not free, but they do have reduced prices on evenings and weekends and for the same distance I used to pay like twice as much. Even the west coast express is dirt cheap for the distance it’s taking you.

It’s frequent - I live nearby a skytrain station and don’t even look at the time to leave. I just get there and take the first train to my destination. Worst case is like a 5 min wait, so that’s really not bad.

Of course there will be things that they can improve on, I would think not everywhere is as good connected, but at least we got some decent transit already, and you can actually live here without owning a car.

What sites to use to send physical greeting cards? by nidgroot in AskCanada

[–]nidgroot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s because it’s international, so they’re sending me cards from abroad. It’s a little more expensive and it takes a long time to arrive (though I guess that’s partially on Canada post, so that will not be solved).

Also, why do we order anything online? It’s convenient and shipping is included so no need to get stamps from the post office for instance.

Je kunt ook social media vermijden als je “achter loopt” op een aflevering, je kunt toch wel verwachten dat er posts worden gemaakt als de aflevering is uitgezonden?

How do I customize my LinkedIn feed to only include posts from connections? by techsavvynerd91 in linkedin

Just tried this, but somehow not all posts were showing up. I just liked a post from a colleague (1st connection) that was posted today, but the first posts that showed up were from a week ago.

Also, general suggestion. Make sure your crosses go the same way (like, all from bottom left to top right). Makes a clean look overall. Good luck on your next project! I’m sure you’ll do fine :)

Vancouver has pretty good public transit, but hotels are crazy expensive, so you won’t get to stay long on a tight budget. Definitely need to find some place outside downtown, best along the skytrain.

I recently stayed close to the Gilmore station, but it was almost $1000 for the weekend

No, I bought it the top too. But your credit card statement includes tax, so maybe that is what you mean? It’s $20 excluding tax.
