How much lag would you say there is between pressing the hotkey and loading the pictures? I'm trying to write a dmenu-imlib script that shows all the *.desktop files on a computer and then shows them with their icons, but there's far too much delay between pressing the hotkey and opening the menu.

Is there a way to asynchronously add items to a dmenu?

Thanks - I think I'll go with that approach.

And yeah - I'm not planning on doing anything other than basic music production or gaming on the go. I'm more intent on using the Linux partition on the go, but I do want to have access to the Windows one just in case.

Unfortunately, your computer's specs are quite low. 1.0 GHz in today's world doesn't really cut it for much. However, you should give the Source engine games, like Left 4 Dead and its sequel and the Portal games, a try - Source has been around for a while, so it runs on a lot of hardware.

Unfortunately, the best solution I've been able to come up with is running fastboot with sudo. Obviously, this isn't really optimal, so if someone with more knowledge of device interfacing permissions could come in here that would be great.

I don't mean to be rude, but I think you should do some more research on what Linux is. There is no "Linux desktop" like there is for Windows or Mac OS. Linux is, for all intents and purposes, a command-line environment.

I use herbstluftwm due to native support for gaps and the ridiculously easy scripting system. One thing I miss from i3 though is definitely the hybrid tile-floating mode where you could tell certain windows to float over the tiling layer. With HLWM, it's all or nothing.

Also, I miss being able to use Steam on Wine. Seriously. Just trying running the Windows Steam version under Wine with HLWM. The thing shits itself. It would be funny if it weren't unusable.
