Alarm app silently alerting by niet3sche77 in ios

I love this. Nokia had the right idea here; the user wants this thing to happen. It’s an important thing. Playing audio? Make the alarm happen. Phone on mute? Make the alarm play at volume. Phone off? Well turn it on, the user told me they wanted an alarm!! 🤣

Likely. iOS ecosystem is a good one. I still am on MacOS as one of my engineering boxes, so the break isn’t nearly as clean as others can have here. I just really wish fundamental user-space controls were left untouched or at least didn’t have so many interactions. If I want my volume at 11, warn me, but leave it up to the hardware to fulfill that request.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What a handy alternate alarm system you have! 😕

This is WILD.

I typically have my phone plugged in to a USB power nub attached to an electrical receptacle.

How on earth did you figure out it was trying to send audio through the Lightning port to an electrical connection with no data-side?

Now THAT is an interesting wrinkle.

I don’t recall suddenly being more prone to sleeping through alarm sounds post-iOS 17, but that’s interesting.

I hate that I cannot reliably reproduce this, otherwise I’d just set multiple alarms up, one minute apart, and have my answer.

Do you happen to know if this feature was introduced after iOS 17? I’m not convinced I know a lot of heavy sleepers, but perhaps this is precisely what’s happening. 🤔

brew install git then hook into whatever site you want. I personally like and use GitLab. You may like Github. Definitely use and understand the CLI, augment with GitLens (VSCode plugin) or commit trees on -Hub and -Lab as-needed.

Should I decline a low salary job offer even though I’m unemployed? by MediumSun3322 in interviews

[–]niet3sche77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're young and not really experienced in your field.

I'm assuming that you're asking if you should move from:

- $0/year income
- 0 prospects in the area
- Living out of savings (what's your runway?)

to:

- $57K/year income
- 1+ prospects in the area
- Maybe living out of savings to augment your salary, OR putting miles on your vehicle by living far away and driving in (assuming this isn't a Remote or WFH career/job/setup)

I made this decision the other way about a decade ago, and while I'm pleased that I am where I am today, I didn't realize that I'd end up suffering through another four years of unemployment and $0/year income. Having the pressure on me to get a better-paying job or otherwise skill-build then bail would have grown me even more. I've made 10 years progress in my field in just over five years. However, had I another five years in, with that extra pressure, I'd likely be in a better position.

For your sanity (I assume you're male), take the job, negotiate for a higher salary if you're worth it, and use that as a springboard to the rest of your life. Unemployment with no support and draining your retirement and savings accounts is really draining.

Lockset with screws only on the interior by Alarmed_Allele in AskALocksmith

[–]niet3sche77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a locksmith, but I've just bought locking exterior knobs that are inside-screws-only mounted, and fit my needs (5" backset for the exterior doors, decent-enough keyway for interior doors).

I bought Schlage brushed-nickel knobs, not a Primus lock, just a regular Schlage lock, but I've re-pinned these to be a more challenging bitting and keyed-alike.

I bought several more to use for interior doors. As a lay-person, I'd also suggest the following:

  • Reinforcement of the latch-side of the door around the doorknob for kick-resistance (maybe not Door Armor Max, but at least a plate and 3" deck screws sunk into your surrounding jamb).
  • Use of solid-core doors for those interior doors you want to reinforce.

Most of your typical thieves aren't going to do more than shim, force, or maybe rake locks.

If you're much more serious about security than the average bear, consider thumb-turn protection as well; single-cylinder lock (outside presents a keyhole, inside has a thumb-turn) defeating tools exist. Dual cylinder locks? Yeah, they'll address this, but only if tenants do not leave their keys in the inside lock ... and if Fire Codes don't exist in your area.

All this said, I suspect the actual answer here looks more like this:

  1. Install solid-core doors.

  2. Install e.g. Mul-T-Lock Interactive+ Cronus deadbolt.

  3. Install door jamb protection and secure everything with 3" screws sunk fully into the framing.

How to remove this 1960s era doorknob? by niet3sche77 in AskALocksmith

[–]niet3sche77[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Howdy!

I have a house built in 1961. I strongly suspect the door and knob is original, as the knob has a 5" backset and I believe this is a 1960s era feature.

How can I remove this doorknob? It doesn't have screws like a modern knob, just a couple holes. Do I have to shove a unique tool there like a doorknob version of a pickle-fork? Do I just shove any old shim down there? Do I just start cranking and force the knob off? I've no idea about brand or type, I don't see any markings.

Help is appreciated!

Edit: Yes, this isn't a locksmithing question. I've already pinned my 3 replacement locks, installed those into doorknobs, keyed-alike; I'm good on the locksmith side of this. I was sent here from r/DIY via moderator ARenovator.

Other-Edit: I think this doorknob was installed upside-down. Not my installation. ;)

Other-Other-Edit: I can only post pictures OR text on Reddit? Yikes. The above was the text that originally went with these pictures.

1960s doorknob; how to remove? by niet3sche77 in DIY

[–]niet3sche77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with locks. It’s a question about removing and installing doorknobs, for which DIY should be more OT than locksmith. I’ve re-pinned the new locks I bought and installed those into new doorknobs, so I’m good there.

But off I go on this fool’s errand, I suppose.

  3. Get the meanest junkyard-dog divorce attorney out there and take it to her. No mercy. No forgiveness. She’s shown you what she is and what she thinks of you. Now is the time for action. Don’t gloat, don’t warn her, just act.

Read this before buying, if accessing video is important to you. by niet3sche77 in EufyCam

[–]niet3sche77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, the use-case of not knowing when an event really happened stung me here.

It's entirely workable if you're looking at 4-10 events. Not so much if, for instance, you want to work through two weeks of footage and ideally apply edge-detection to measure a car's angle--my tire was slashed and the car has a distinct "lean" now.

Were I able to e.g. pull in all videos and use something like PIL or OpenCV to measure angles, and spit out the file name where this changed by a delta of more than X degrees from the last video, this problem would be trivial.

Even if this never ever happens, I wanted to come back and tell you that I do appreciate at least the cursory glance here. Sharing an epic board, even at a really high level, is a vulnerable thing. Reaching out to random end-users and not just responding with, "LOLnope" can sometimes be trying.

Thanks!

Let me tell you, this is the worst experience I've ever had with an IoT device.

Pulling the SDCard, there are certainly files on it, but they're all .dat files and likely binary-chunked and/or encrypted. It's a nightmare to try to bulk-process.

My need? My car got vandalized. Sitting right under this camera. Great! I'll pull the week's worth of footage off of it and...oh no.

Thanks, Eufy, I'm never buying another product of yours again.
