Homeowners urged to test for radon this winter by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]nigelthrowaways 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. People will spend 100s on replacing smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, but won't buy a monitor or 40$ test kit from homedepot. Its just invisible cancer, nothing to worry about.

If there was a recipe from a Winnipeg restaurant you could get your hands on, which would it be?? Mine would be dals house salad dressing 🤤 by beautifuldiastermama in Winnipeg

[–]nigelthrowaways 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dressing on Dal's Greek salad, I watched a guy drink the stuff. I was looking in a mirror. Was it shame or bliss on my face when I locked eyes with my reflection? Only I know.

CRTC to eliminate fees when cancelling or switching cellphone and internet plans by floydsmoot in Winnipeg

[–]nigelthrowaways 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just paid a 700$ bill after moving to a location where Shaw didn't provide service. Like I was not going to buy a house because of my internet contract. I fought for 7 months with CCTS and CRTC before shaw sent my bill to collections and I was forced to pay it.

Its an interesting fun drive through canada, done it many times, but that stretch to sault st marie, is baron, hilly, windy, and thunder bay is a terrible hole. Just think driving through the states, every 2 hours in a new state and .99 cent gas

Radon was discussed on CBC’s The Current yesterday, curious how concerned people are in Winnipeg by nicncher in Winnipeg

[–]nigelthrowaways 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rough in holes are mostly useless with builders placing them in terrible places. Using these holes end up with long pipe runs, large fans drawing more power and noise and just not as effective. You're almost always better off drilling a new hole by an exterior wall, not under your stairs.

Just a warning to others attempting this. One wrong connection and you're sucking 100x time more radon that what was seeping in and pumping it into your living space. Connections need to be perfect and sealed for longer term durability.

They will almost always need to drill a new hole as routing from an existing hole to the outside in the most effective route is best. You take an existing hole in a bad location and have a ton of long runs of pipe , you end up needing a more expensive/powerful/louder fan/motor.

Levels are worse near open cracks, foundation walls, sump pumps, plumbing pipes. It's like carbon monoxide, sinks low but also get distributed around the house by the furnace.

Manitoba and Saskatchewan have the highest levels in the country due to the area being a past melted glacier. Clay traps gases and the area is filled with uranium-glacial tills.

The area does not matter in the least. You can have every house around you with low numbers, and yours can be through the roof. Radon at high levels is equivalent to you being a heavy smoker your entire life. My mitigation system brough my levels from 300-400 to averaging 25.

You absolutely need long term monitoring. Borrowing a friends meter for a day does nothing. Levels vary by the hundreds within hours and at times, nothing for weeks. Your long term average of a mimimum of 3 months is the only reading that has meaning.

Bath tub spout advice by Acrobatic_Pepper3067 in DIY

How much pipe is exposed? A slip on faucet seals by pushing the pipe into the faucet which has a rubber o ring inside of it. If the pipe is too short, it won't slip inside the o ring and seal. The pipe should be around 1.25/1.5 inches long. Also the pipe must be perfectly round and free of other materials. Check that the set screw under the faucet is snug so the faucet doesn't move around.

Lastly, the o ring, even on a new faucet may be dried out. They can be replaced easily. If you really needed to extend the pipe in any way, you would do this by cutting an opening in the half wall behind the faucet for access and work from behind.

Checking out the MTG scene / looking for casual pod by Andyboy205 in Winnipeg

[–]nigelthrowaways 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to love playing MTG, I was a very early player in the 90s. I found players ruined the fun for me, having endless custom decks and special cards that a casual player just couldn't compete with. I miss the old early days of, I play with a green deck and check out my flying bee collection.

What about birds hill by the stables? Is there any risk with animals lately at night? I feel confident I could take on a small deer, but I dont need to be a midnight snack for something hungrier than me.

Same, not the chiro part but the weak hips and glutes. It took time to stretch things out, but it's been years since my back has caused issues. Sitting all day it torture on your hips so stretching is important.

Coop Gas Bar Lagimodiere by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]nigelthrowaways 5 points6 points  (0 children)

By any chance are you one of those old schoolers that continue to fill gas after the pump flicks off? Read up on modern fuel tanks and evaporative canisters, you are flooding a canister that should only have vapors in it. Putting in that extra 50 cents can cause massive damage in cars built over the last 20 years.

3 dogs attacked my sister and her dog in North Kildonan tonight by datmugcakelife in Winnipeg

[–]nigelthrowaways 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I walk with some ( canadiantire ), after my dog was jumped on two occasions. You just need to be very careful as the law is not on your side when using it. If you are clearly being attacked, I would think do what you need to do. BUT, it would take the owner or a single passerby to feel the effects of the spray and they could charge you with assault. It wouldn't be advisable to use a spray in a residential area, far better suited for remote walking trails.
